Thanks for being here at the Merriam Pianos KZread channel. Here’s another video in our VST plugin series as we look at the Noire plugin.
There’s a crazy amount of plugins readily available in 2021, so we hope our deep exploration will be helpful. Noire is part of the Native Instruments universe, which offers a host of different plugins.
Please like the video below, and if it’s your first time to the channel, subscribe and hit that notification bell!
Background:
What is Noire? Well, it’s a sample set of a nicely recorded grand piano. While it’s not the best recorded grand piano sample out there, that isn’t what Noire is all about - Noire is more like a synthesizer built around a core acoustic piano sound.
Sound:
As far as the presets go, there’s a bunch of fairly pure grand piano sounds, all of which are perfectly functional as part of a track.
That said, none of the patches are as good as the upper tier VST’s for solo piano playing, but again, that’s not the purpose of the plugin.
Getting into the Particle Generator function is where the real fun begins, with some really good sounds layered over the acoustic piano base. A lot of these would be great for composing, particularly for film music.
There’s a ton of editable parameters in the sound design mode as well, but most of these would probably only be useful if you were using a clean piano sound.
Summary:
Overall this is a competitively priced plugin. For approx $50 more than the Alicia’s Keys plugin, we feel this one is a better value buy, and overall more usable overall. You’re going to end up coming across sounds that you won’t be expecting, which can be a great way to spark creativity.

Great in-depth review and description of this library! The only thing I would say is that the "Samples" folder of Noire is actually 14.6 GB instead of 300-400 MB. Other than that as a composer/pianist myself, I can really appreciate this.

yeah, I was thinking about this too as soon as he said it.. the entire library is over 14GB... when I monitor the disk activity when I'm playing the Noire Pure and I do a full automated sweep with all attack volumes from A1 to C9, I can see Kontakt (which has Noire loaded) read >6GB of data from disk.

Hi Stu. Thanks so much for this review! As I said in a comment to one of your other videos, I really love the Garritan CFX, but I will need a new go-to piano, as it seems that the vendor is not interesting in providing a native Apple Silicon version. I have watched many other videos about this and other pianos (yours are the best!). The "pure" piano of Noire sounds great, but it is the more soft and ethereal sounds that I really love. Nils Frahm really brought the essence of his music to this plugin.

  • @Anatidaephobe

    @Anatidaephobe

    4 ай бұрын

Just in FYI, as of late 2022, the Garritan CFX vst is now natively compatible with the newer Apple M series chips. You can simply upgrade the Garritan ARIA Player to v2.001 or above for native support. Although older ARIA versions will still work through Rosetta if need be. Garritan CFX used to be my favorite, but it is a little long in the tooth these days (2023) and I much prefer the VSL line of Synchron Piano vsts, if you have the money and a fast computer this is a no brained in my opinion. That said, i still love Noire as a specific niche sound, especially the emotional patch, SFX, and some of the felt patches as well. Cheers!

Another "plug in" that I'm really enjoying. I come from the perspective of a dinner pianist in Waikiki. This one really works. I don't understand why the higher end slab pianos don't grab me in the same way. It's really too bad. What people really want to know is which is the best or which are the most economical MIDI controllers you can pair with these virtual voices. There is too much emphasis on just replicating accoustic instruments which at this point in time are completely passé. Again your playing does justice to these voices. You are not a basic triad type of player. There are very few pianists who actually have enough harmonic chops to properly demonstrate these instruments.

  • @kaisfp

I don't understand why did they choose Yamaha, even if it's a softer CFX (softer compared to C7), it's still a Yamaha which is famous for having a relatively bright (even metallic) sound, and then they make this soft piano sound library out of it. The end result is really nice and Noire is one of my favorite piano plugin, I just don't get the piano brand/model choice.

  • @totizedger

@@kaisfpExactly i think there are too few good VST out there of pianos by other manufacturers than Yamaha, making a warm sounding VST out of Yamaha pianos that are famous for being bright doesn’t really make much sense, i do like Noire though but i’m also confused about the choice. Same thing with the Garritan CFX it is really good but imagine if they did that with a Steinway or some other brand

First I just want to say, great work explaining everything that's important about the products you review. I watched a bunch of your videos; amazing work! pretty much an instant subscriber here. Now here's the big question. Where did you learn how to play like this? You are really one of the best pianists I've ever heard. I am a guitar player of 10 plus years by ear, but 4 years ago I started composing on the piano by transposing what I knew from the guitar. How can I learn how to play jazz like you did here? is there a program that teaches exactly what you did, improvising jazz with continuous chord changes and all? Just trying to be free from chord repetition and to have a better understanding of music. Thank you!

Put the ugly PC in another room, get a longer USB "printer" cable (mind the max length), install chrome remote desktop on the pc and use a laptop to control your pc from your piano. Problem solved. Works extremely well with a Chromebook that has a touch screen and can be used as a tablet. I put mine on the music stand when I don't need it. The delay is acceptable and since that's only for the display I don't mind it. The audio comes over the USB cable anyway so no issues there.

@@greenpointstock6345 I'm just guessing. I thought he said something about it in one of these virtual piano "plug in" demos. It would have to be something on the level of the RD 2000, but different. Could be a Nord. I think he wants something lighter weight than the RD 2000. It might be a Keyola.

Does the noire piano work in mainstream without buying the kontakt software? Any help? Or does it work with the free kontakt 6 player?

The notes C#3, D3 & D# 3 ruin this VST for me. They sound dead & dull, like someone forgot to remove the felt from the string. I've tried everything to resolve this problem, to no avail.

Sorry, too jazzy, dry and abstract. Not extending service to this instrument that is supposed to touch the heart!

Needless to say, the Noire plugin is incredibly versatile. Everyone has different musical tastes of course when it comes to style and genre. Thanks for tuning in! :)

Don't misunderstand me. You are a great pianist, that's obvious. I just thought this instrument needed a more "mellow" style than the hard jazzy one to show its potential. Thanks for the detailed video. This instrument is definitely on my shopping list 👍
