Noctua NH-D15 G2 Promises TOP Performance but costs $150!

Noctua finally released the long-awaited NH-D15 G2, which promises top performance. Unfortunately, the price tag is too high, at 150 dollars/euros.
According to Noctua, the products are currently shipped to warehouses worldwide, and consumers will receive them at the same time as reviewers. Normally, reviewers receive them first, but Noctua didn't want to disappoint users!
The NH-D15 G2 will come in three different versions. The most suitable one will depend on the CPU you plan to use it with. This cooler is also equipped with Noctua's new fans, which we are looking forward to evaluating with our Longwin machine.
NH-D15 G2 (standard version, medium Base Convexity)
NH-D15 G2 LBC (Low Base Convexity)
NH-D15 G2 HBC (High Base Convexity)
We are sure Noctua won't let us down, but the price tag is still too high. That said, we should consider Noctua's top support and the vast development cost of this product. It might look "just" another air cooler, but for its development, Noctua informed us that it spent years of research till it had the best possible outcome!

I like seeing 8 heatpipes, high fin density, and awesome fans... but the new NH-D15 will have to substantially outperform my Phantom Spirit before I would pay that much for it. Thumbs up!

That's the problem, I think. I just don't there is any reason why anyone should pick this over the Phantom Spirit. It's 1/3 of the price, will guaranteed get you over 90% of the way there for that price, given how hard it is to optimize these tower coolers. Like I appreciate Jacob's enthusiasm, but 150 USD is insane pricing. At that price point, it is already going up against some of the highest performing 360mm and 420mm AIOs, and it's going to get torn to shreds from a price-to-performance angle.

150$ seems like a price geared towards Noctua fanboys. 2-3 degrees is a good improvement but at that price it goes head to head with some really good 360mm AIOs (and sometimes being even more expensive).

''noctua fanboys'' The NH D15 literally shits on most new gen coolers nowadays and it got released on 2014. You're not special cause you don't like noctuas.

@@vestaexe2224 "shits on most new gen coolers" you can get similar or better performance than the nh_d15 for less than half of its price. I have no issue with noctua, but I have issue with bad pricing. 150$ is way too much.

@@vestaexe2224 no it's not, see the Thermalright phantom spirit less than a half than NH-D15 giving similar if not better performance. It's not that I don't like Noctua - it's I don't like overpriced products. Unlike fanboys or haters I don't have any strong feelings for the company, I look for performance first and value. Noctua aren't special in terms of performance with current cooler, and the price of 150$ is not justifiable. Such cooler should cost 80-90$ max .

Love Noctua. Had 4 of their coolers, 2 hd15s, hd12a and one of their first single tower coolers, sold 1 hd15 with a PC and using the second 1 in my main PC, the 12a is in my second PC. Also got 10+ Noctua fans, from old 10+ years old ones to the newest and strongest 3000 rpm ones. All that said 150$ is too much. In my country the hd15 new in store is 150$+ and I already was unwilling to pay so bought 1 used for 50$ and 1 open box for a bit under 100$ but that is the max I'm willing to pay and the new hd15g2 will be 200$+ in my country so unless I find 1 open box or used for under 100$ i'll stick to hd15.

Or just buy a Thermalright cooler that can match that performance for under $50. But PC Master Race loves wasting money.

I hear a lot about Thermalright coolers. I seriously need to find some to test once I return from Computex and see if their performance is THAT good. For sure, the NH-D15 G2 costs a LOT, but I have mine D15 for many many years now and it is still running fine, and Noctua keeps on updating the mounting hardware, so I can STILL use it.

@@HardwareBusters Thermalright released mounting Hardware for LGA1700 when it came out so it shouldn't be an issue moving forward. Even their profile coolers that are directly mounted to motherboards got new backplates for LGA1700. Deepcool, Scythe & ID Cooling also released new mounting kits for LGA1700 for older coolers. Updated mounting kits for new platforms isn't an exclusive by Noctua anymore so they really need to step up their game for their asking price. The multiple base finishes seems to be a desperate move to gain 1C for very specific test cases(think AMD pushing their 7000 series up to 95C out of the box and Intel not caring about long term effects by how much they spec their i9's recently) and charging $100 more because they were over budget in R&D. Sure it's great for some nerds like us that would like to see how much you can push traditional heatsink cooling but it's impractical in today's economy. See Scythe being able to lower their prices while still making incremental gains with every iteration of their coolers.

The price in my opinion is too high for an air cooler even if it is noctua dh 15 G2, for this amount of money u can easily buy an AIO And why are they not making them in white color that orange color is not sthg anyone likes in my opinion.

Well, depends on how you define top I guess, but I think overall the benchmarks show that it's a disappointment. That a 2 1/2 year old existing competitor (Thermalright PA) with 120mm fans @higher RPM actually beats Noctua gen2 on max speed dB cannot be overstated. With 140mm fans, it's fairly likely that Thermalright would straight up beat Noctua gen2 in most aspects. That definitely falls way short of the expectations after a decade of engineering. Noctua didn't have to blow me away, they just had to show a clear performance advantage coupled with their brand rep. But as it stands the performance increase is not clear at all, and that's just not good enough for such a massive price difference.

Till I finish all tests, I cannot comment on its performance. My full analysis will be out into next week, after running countless tests in a thermal chamber, and with Powenetics hooked up to evaluate everything. Temperature alone don't say anything.
