Four people refuse to work on my house, but be nice to them, you never know their story so no needs to judge them please :)
I was just looking for someone for a week or more, to help me, and I find my self wasting precious time... I learned my lesson...
I'm very positive about this project and I believe I can do it!
Think good,
Osher

Hope this helps. External walls are prone to drastic temperature changes and extreme amounts of moisture. So the cement binding the stone should be more flexible. I recommend a 1:1:3 mix - cement, lime, sand Lime has benefits because of its flexibility and its porosity; it helps moisture that has penetrated a wall to evaporate. Lime is also less prone to crack than cement. Lime helps to repair fine cracks by allowing carbon dioxide to penetrate which then reacts with free lime to harden and close the cracks. Answered 17th

Looking at your begining work with cement it is strong tidy and defenitely looks like you have worked with this material before. Might be a good idea to to clear out all the rubble and leave the ruin open to the rain while you are away. Now that the roof is totally off, the rain would wash away all the dirt and grime, and you can start on the rebuild next year on a nice clean structure😁

The walls that are more vulnerable... Take those old logs you downed... And Ram pegs into ground with sledge hammer.. And slant them 45 degrees and shore up the walls with log supports at a diagonal To hold up the walls.. So they don't fall over while you are away. Then take a blue tarp and drape it over the partial roof and nail the edge to a board on the outside as a flange, PURPOSE SO WATER DOESN"T RUN DOWN INTO CRACKS OVER WINTER, and wash out more lime mortar.... less work later... you can leave the tarp later while you work your way up and remove it once you get up there.

Bro you did a great job!!! But... To speed up, you need to mechanize the work. I know it's expensive, but time and life are much more expensive!) So... For cleaning stone and better cement adhesion, the best way is Karcher. To fill the joints and holes, there is a special tool (one guy even made a 3D model, if you're interested, I'll try to find it) and a screwdriver. Think about this option!

I wish you well-though, oof, sorry to say that the cement will likely give you problems down the road with damp, cracking, water damage, and so on, compromising the building further. As long as your stones are granite you at least won't have to worry about it destroying the stones, too. Lime mortar may be more expensive in the short term, but it lasts a lot longer and over time it's stronger than cement (it gets stronger and stronger over time, vs cement getting weaker and weaker). But your path is chosen! I wish you success!

Well done brother. Your courage is only comparable to the one that was required to build that house back in the day. Think that a small village like that ever had a sizeable construction company? Not a chance, it was mostly a combination of the owner of the land and his family who sourced the stones from neighbouring lands and assembled them one by one. Always kept that in mind when looking for motivation. Keep up the good work.

The level of craftsmanship I see in the placement of the very large stones in your ruin ,very few ,if anyone ,is left in this generation that can match that level of stone masonry. The ones that you tried to hire are NOT stonemasons. They might want to be. I would only let a master level mason repair the structure,if it were mine. The stonework is beautiful!!! Your wall looks good to me! We decided to go with cement as well. I can tell the exposed part on our addition is cement so continuing with that. We watched friends of ours struggle to find contractors, and when they do show up they are late and if he doesn’t supervise the work himself then it’s not as good quality. We already planned to do the work ourselves to save on expenses and after seeing the frustration of trying to get contractors we definitely wouldn’t bother. The only exception is an electrician for obvious reasons and we are still looking. We have electricity, it’s just 50 years old and needs to be redone, but all in good time. Keep up the good work! 👷🏽❤️

Hi. Admire your courage to start a big,big job like that. I have a stone house like that. Best way considering the situation that you are not here and don´t have the big tools, is best to try contractors or masons to do the big job´s. If i don´t want or find the right persons, try yourself but that takes more time, effort and money to buy necessary tools. You can start to get sand and cement and start filling the holes between the stones, step by step. Keep on.

Water issues. Osher you got massive amounts of water coming from the front of the house, going through the calcada pavement and down beneath your house and under your floor + you got water from the side where the tank is on your neighbor an under floor... So you have to dig out the calcada in front, create a channel, and put bubble plastic and 57 sharp gravel in front of bubble plastic So water goes down the front of your house and into a pipe... Pipe goes under you stone. Cut hole and lay PVC pipe with holes on top, not crinkle cheap blk pipe,. NO PVC about 4 inches thick, and with holes... Plastic drapes down so edge comes onto top of pipe, and sharp edge gravel, not river stone.. and then cover back with calcada or just leave the rim of gravel around the front of your house... the water comes down the front of stone, or road, since you are the lowes point and because your house is below grade it all runs to you... So it will enter pipe and keeps flowing out of your house at angle and out... Another pipe around perimeter of your basement... Again agregate stone and then a cement slab.... the water is running down the stone behind the walls and under to the pipe and out the house... Put cleanouts... Once you got the walls sorted, you can use screws with large flanges and put dimple plastic, then cement on top of that.... And water will not form, slides down the plastic, down to the drain pipes and out of the house. and HOUSE STAYS DRY, WALLS STAY DRY..... and then you can put finished walls on top of that..... The large stone wall under the door already has a hole drill a hole through and insert the 4-6 inch pvc pipe to the front and outside.... At down bubble on level so it flows always down and away, gravity, under floor and slab through the house to the outside, since you can't go up.. You want to be down bubble, even under the slab.... then gravel and then slab.... So you stay dry....

@@MyPortugalDream Not quite what I meant. I meant that the water will not roll down the hill because you are lower and down the front of you house, coming out under that huge rock under the basement near the door.. Its flowing down the hill through the pourous calcada street and down to the lowest level an under the front, under that huge boulder... and later will flood the basement.... so you got to make it not go through the rocks from the outside and down plastic to large pipe, drill hole under that rock not touching the rock and under floor of basement to the outside and down the hilll, leaving your basement DRY.... concrete slabl floor that goes on top of gravel and dry.. OK... I got to go.... Blessings.. later.

Yeah, I have seen so many Portuguese channels and it is the same, the contractors are very unreliable. You would think people need money, but obviously they only want money for simple jobs not difficult work. All of the channels I watch that are renovating the ruins end up doing it themselves. Like you say, you do you. It’s looking good so far.

The last part you did to the wall looks good. You may have to pick an area and give yourself a time line to get it done. When do you plan on moving in? It is harder to work on something this size by yourself. You need music to work by. Good luck with this project.
Osher I feel for you trades people are from my experience the most unreliable of any 1 in ten if your lucky will show up your ruin is exactly that and it’s cost I feel is because it’s a start again I admire you for taking it on my concern is that you will be charged heaps for any help and no guarantee a good job will be resulting , in some where Portuguese tradies are engaged 2 that stick in my mind one was English the other local and both rooted the buildings problems were no roof/ walls were straight or same on both sides so every truss & batton is bespoke , I think asking for volunteers is your only hope or the tradies take the house from nice price to a outrageous price that tells me something less rundown becomes attractive I would go myself but my saying god helps those that help themselves and 61 having restored 1 home with a builder and I am still in therapy from 1991 lol dodgy as good luck amigo👍❤️❤️❤️🙏

Ok. The cement.. You don't want Slop... You want cement, real hydraulic cement With strenghtening additives+Fiber on top or metal small strands added to the cement for extra strenght... And Angular aggregate, the side of a marble, with sharp edges.. Not river stone. Angular rough cut... The cement is mixed DRY.. NOT WET... thoroughly mixed in dry pan or cement mixer... Only when thoroughly mixed, do you add water, slowly.. You don't want slop... You want wet paste...Too much water weakens the mix.... so you add slowly after dry mix. Face mask, don't breathe silica. you then add the slivers of metal strand fibers, and then additives to add strength.... So there is that.... The corners, have to be taken down, and rebuilt...If you don't do the whole house, you have to do the corners, or there is not structural support, they built them wrong... And also where there are cracks.... You have to fill them with rebar and then wood forms and then fill with cement. The whole house should NOT be cement, because it needs to breath... MORTAR. MORTAR.... The stacks of the whole stone is wrong. There is no structural support. They just placed loose stone one on top of another and nothing is holding.... the ideal situation would be to take the whole hous down to the ground, and rebuild it again using the same stones, but the right way. Its a small house and it will take just as much time to do it right as it is to do it wrong... You still have to fill the stones, So might at well do it right and have peace of mind, and know the corners and cracks will no exist..... But if you insist on not taking it down, then you have to make it survive structurally.. At least do the corners, where cracked and interlace them build corner and cracked areas correctly.... Include rebar and build a lattice all the way up... Then forms and cement for added strength.... There are huge gaps in between ever stone. This will cause the stones to slip over time and crack and fall.. You have to fill all the way to the back of the stone... GET PRESSURE WASHER... Hose down the entire structure knocking out and let run out all the gaps and all the filler in between..... Emptying the holes and gaps.... .Then you will fill with stone and cement in the middle of those gaps... Or mortar... using rebar in the wider gaps and smaller stone as filler.....

So in Portugal you can restore a house without a plan from an architect, without asking for permits and without contractors, even if there are so many structural critical points? In Italy there are many things you can't do on your own, because they needs not only permits from the local administrations but the regulations ask also for professional workers to do such jobs. You need certificates to prove that those jobs were done following the law and only professionists can do it. This is for every modification that change the official map of the house, like open new doors or windows (IF you're allowed at all to do so, depending if the house is under some kind of protection, like the landscape protection or protection for historical or artistic reasons, etc), if you need to comply with the quake-proof laws, or if you must rework the internal system like natural gas or power supply lines (you can't redo them on your own, you need certifications of safety at the end of the work and you can't do it yourself, a contractor is needed). Long story short, in Italy you must (or should at least) communicate to the local administration every work you do on your house, from a carport and up. For little things it's enough to say to the administration "ehy, I'm starting installing this thing" without waiting for permits, but for major things you must absolutely ask for permits and you can't put your own hands in those jobs D:

Hey my friend 🙌🏻 I think it's kind of the same in Portugal as well. If you have a house with habitation license you can work on whatever you want as long as you don't change the outside (door windows). So for now I can do it, later on I will need to go to the municipality and I'm planning to do so, but now it's too early. If you take the structure down and start from scratch you must have a license to do so.

I think it is for safety because some people would actually do such bad work they would kill or injure themselves . I also think it is terrible money scam and control of people's freedom to have what they want in their own home. I think the government's of every country should only require a finished inspection at each point. That way people can't do bad work but they can still afford to do work in a timely fashion. Do you agree ? These things interest me 🥰❣️
@MyPortugalDream
Жыл бұрын
I agree 👍 From what I understand, because I have habitation license, I can put a tent inside the house and live just like that. The only time I will get bother by the municipality is if someone else is in danger because of my house and not me. Anyway in general, I believe people should live their life and try as much as possible to forget that there is a government somewhere in the city 😅😅

Hi Trish, no worries, the next video will be ready soon ❣️
Yeah, I agree. I am a mason. Lots of issues here. The house was originally built in a bad way.. they just threw stones on top of stone, haphazardly.. They didn't line and alternate the stones.. So one stone is not supporting the other beneath it. And its all loose small stone. So it has no structural integrity....The edges are just jammed loosely in there.... IF, maybe they used lime, mortar.... Its gone, washed out and created huge gaps and all the loose filler stone is gone.. So the walls have no integrity... The walls can literally collapse at any time. There is nothing supporting the middle of the stones, and if you chip what remains of the mortar away, there is the possibility the whole wall can loose and fall down on your head.... That is why these guys are not wanting to touch it... Not because they don't want the work. Also the corners are gone, and that is not holding the walls up.. and huge cracks in the middle, signalling that the walls are about to collapse...... SO.. what to do..... The SAFE AND CORRECT WAY is to take all of it down to below the foundation.. Completely down.. Save the stones.. And begin below the foundation and put drains in and build the base and the foundations correctly.. Deal with the water issues and then slowly build back up, using the same stones and slip form method... Rebar and support all the way up.... But he doesn't want to do that.. Its a small house, and it takes just as much time to do it wrong than to rebuild correctly and be safe and sure for future... I would do the later... the only thing he can do is use cement, but he will still have issues, to fill it in, and hope it works. But then you have water and mold intrusion.... So what to do.... Those walls will not hold like that... And if he manages to cement it all in, it will have cracks and structural issues.. because the underlying structural support issues haven't been dealt with, only plastered over with cement..... not to mention water issues... Not good...

Like I said brother, first you will come to visit then a beer then you see exactly what's going on 🤠
I watch a lot of Stone houses being renovated in France and Portugal. It is a known fact that you are supposed to use lime on the inside and the outside walls because of the fact, the walls can't breathe with cement. If you are planning on using lime on the inside of your house and you have cement on the outside of your house you'll have horrible dampness moisture inside the walls of your house because the cement pulls in moisture. Whereas the lime, let your walls breathe. I think i's a bad idea for you to use to cement on the inside or the outside of your house. I know that the lime is expensive, but you're doing yourself a lot of harm by putting cement between those stones. Most people have to chip all the cement out.l because they learned that when restoring stonehouses, you cannot use cement in the walls between the stones. I don't know if you know this or not, but you should look into it because you could have a horrible mess on your hands in the future. Just saying, if you haven't looked into it, you should. If that guy was gonna put cement on the inside of your house and clay on the outside of your house, I don't think he's correct doing that. But it's your house, so do what you want to do, but if you look at other channels on KZread, especially one called Sean's world in France, they all use lime inside and out. Rendering inside walls and lime in between the rocks. That's just one guy I watch, but I watch several others who have restored their stone houses and the first thing they always say is you have to use lime on the inside and the outside. Good luck. I'll keep watching you and hopefully. You'll decide the right thing for you.

Wow Barbara !!! Thank you for taking your time to help me 🙏🏼 I do know that, this is why i found a new method, which is a mix of cement and hydraulic lime, it works well together and the walls can breathe. If you will wach my other videos you sill find it. Thanks again 🙏🏼🙂🙂
