This is what happens when 2 legends collide.
The 2003 World Championship 10,000 meters was truly a unique moment in the history of distance running. In the race, Kenenisa Bekele and Haile Gebrselassie raced to become the world champion in the 10k, and wow what a race it was. These 2 runners are largely regarded as the 2 greatest distance runners in the history of the sport, and with such speed and endurance clashing at once, we saw an absolutely historic performance.
Question of the day - who is the greatest overall distance runner?
-- Haile Gebrselassie or Kenenisa Bekele? --
Thanks for watching and never stop running.

    Letarik Abebe that’s not what he meant. He said if Sileshi was running in a different period than that Kenenisa and Haile, his name would have been very well known or perhaps he could even be holding world records. He was not downsizing Sileshi’s ability, just that the other two were far more superior athletes than him and unfortunately his career was shadowed by them.

    Bekele is still my favorite. I just remember watching him in a big race, I don't remember which one...he was running with the pack, the racers were not lagging, they were nearing the end, they were starting to quicken the pace, people are starting to grimace. Meanwhile, Keninisa is just peaceful looking, not laboring, just smooth. And then, I'll never forget it, with maybe a little over a lap to go, he looked to his right and left, just grinned a little, and HIT THE ACCELERATOR. You could almost hear the collective thoughts of the other runners saying to themselves: "oh no...ho-leeee shit. There's no way..." Because the pace was already strong, nobody went with him. NOBODY. He was gone. I remember laughing, saying, "Look at this fricking guy...after all that, he's not even gassed." Crosses the finish line like he just got back from the market. Unreal.

    Kenenisa Bekele is hands down the greatest distance runner in history not just because of the times he ran or his running range but the fact of his championship races and medals. Haile was known for his world records as in he did break 61 records but that's besides the point. These two Ethiopian greats have changed the meaning of distance running. But I'm going with Bekele on this one. If this video was about who is the greatest distance runner in history based on world records it would obviously be Haile.

    Well, being a decade younger time was bound to give Bekele the advantage. And consider this. He barely ran faster than haile.

  • @Thebrianweissman
    @Thebrianweissman4 жыл бұрын

    While there is much to be said for "being first", and Haile was certainly first in rewriting what was possible in middle and long distance, I give the GOAT nod to Kenenisa. The Lion of Ethiopia not only dominated middle distance for almost a decade, but he was essentially unbeatable in cross country too. His PRs are almost all faster than Haile's, including his marathon time, and no one will ever even come close to matching his 8 consecutive World Cross golds (while doubling each time!). Every athlete needs to be evaluated relative to their era, but Kenenisa and Haile overlapped enough for a fair comparison. It's doubtful any of us will see a runner of Bekele's caliber again in our lifetimes.

  • @aldopedroso6212

    Bekele was Gebrselassie protege. Consider, the 10,000 record was 26:52 when Gebrselassie first broke it (and then it became an annual thing for him) and then trading it off with other runners he knocked THIRTY seconds off the world record. Bekele knocked five off of that. "It's doubtful any of us will see a runner of Bekele's caliber again in our lifetimes." That is what they said about Gebrselassie, that's what they said about Beamon's long jump, Michael Johnson's 200.

    Loved the video 🙂. This was the first world champs I got up in the middle of the night to watch, I was about 1 year into athetics at the time. Amazing to watch the pair pump out so many 62-64s laps. For me Bekele was number 1, although Haile had the most amazing victory in the Sydney 2000 Olympics over Tergat. Both Tergat and Sihine were incredible but got overshadowed by the great two

    Thanks. An amazing story! I've never really had any interest in running as a sport, but recently I ran across a random video on my KZread feed about Grace Ping, a 12 year old cross country runner winning a race against high school track teams. From there I have watched a whole bunch of TRP and other running videos and find the stories behind the athletes fascinating.
