I couldn't tell if that's what I heard or detonation, it's hard to hear, especially while it's idling to the moon on a brand new engine, then giving it throttle ontop of that. Every video "it sounds good" meanwhile you hear that, or a 2 stroke that's sputtering or detonating, especially when he's riding them and has load on the engine.. He's a good mechanic for sure, good at diagnosing issues, but he doesn't know how to tune a bike, what he's listening for, or what a properly tuned bike sounds like....and he revs the piss out of everything for absolutely no reason at all.

What a huge bummer. Joe, I have learned many things in my life, but one lesson I have learned in my 65 years, is never to assume anything! I would have torn down the top end on that bad boy, just because someone else said they rebuilt it, doesn't mean they did it right or have your level of competence in rebuilding engines. I have seen some of the stupidest shit in a ledgy rebuilt engine. Things only being halfway installed or put in upside down or backward. Seals not seated Etc. Can't wait to see what the FUBAR is with this one! :) PS: I am thinking the chain guide was not installed right or locked in and the chain came off letting the valves hit the top of the piston, plus when you are in there look at that spark plug-hole threads, I think they may be buggered up and may need a thread chasing. Just a thought.

If someone doesn't have the competence to clean the carbs, he certainly doesn't know how to rebuild an engine. That would be a red flag, but to Joes credit, he checked the timing, the valve clearance was perfect and the timing chain looked very good too,...soooo. I would have probably done the same and blew the engine.

Personally, whenever a customer would tell me they did "this" or "that" to their bike and proceed to tell me they're a dentist by trade, I double-check everything they said they did. Plus, it's easy to spot the phonies just by asking them a few mechanical questions and listening to their answers. When they start making no sense, it's full tear-down time.

I would have checked them with a magnet. Anyone who drops the serious coin in a bike to rebuild the top and bottom end but not do the water pump seals? Coolant ran right thru it. He gave him the seal so he knew it was pooched. He actually tryed to start and run a fresh rebuild with no coolant? Think Joe got took again. Can usually see new gaskets. I can't see them. He didn't check the cases before buying it? He's got shafted like that before. But maybe he did look. That looks was for us. Not sure. It's hard to tell on the video. The sound isn't the same as standing there. It always sounds noisy. Can't tell by sound on our end. Real curious. But I think he got took again.

I currently have this bike and it was cool to see it being worked on. tension on the chain was low, those tensioners on the side of the cylinder head can be a pain to deal with cause they are auto tensioning. I bet the last guys put it on wrong. The weird thing is the valve train is really loud on these bikes and it sounds like they're rattling apart at full throttle. Also, id recommend putting actual trans oil in it 80/85W, it works a bit better. Should be fun to watch a rebuild on the bike though!

@@jamesclark4 gotcha. when it locked up? I don’t think he checked the tensioner assembly but he did check the timing chain tension obviously, as its right there when you have the head cover off. lets be honest though, someone tells you they rebuilt a bike and since it wont run, and you open up the carb and notice right away its not squirting fuel, clean it, and it starts, makes some odd sounds and locks up the engine 10 ft into your first ride, it could be anything.

When I watch Joe struggle to get the plug loose, it always reminds of a day at the motocross races when the guy next to me was using a cheater pipe on his ratchet to tighten his plug. He came so close to pulling all the threads out that when he cranked it and was driving to the gate, it blew the plug out. I never would have thought you could over do it that much. I laughed so hard.

I left the fuel petcock open over the winter and when I went to start my '04 CRF450R it wouldn't. It would start for a few seconds if I pulled the hot start (adds air) so I knew it was the carb. Cleaned and rebuilt the carb and no joy. Took it to the dealer and that was a shit-show. It was there for over eight months. I finally bought a new carb and that fixed it.

When you check the cam chain it was fine but the tensioners are known to be fine when you check them by hand but under force they decompress when they fail causing loose chain causing catastrophic events. A manual cam chain tensioner will cure this the oem ones are known to fail shoot i think it happened in 02 on crf450r during championship

Will be good to see what it was. It happened to me when I refreshed my 93 CR125 (in 93). I used a Wiseco piston and did not mic it. It was oversized, so when the engine heated up under load it locked up. Frustrating, but that should always be checked, just like the ring gap. Absolutely not saying it was your fault, but it does happen that new parts get shipped out of spec. Same exact noise/ reaction by the way.

Classic “I lost the receipts” build. Sounded like the cam chain went on a trip, whether the tensioner was ill adjusted or the cam sprocket wasn’t tightened correctly. Even if they did have it running, without a load you may not notice it. The good thing is if you roached the head there’s tons of good used parts available for them, they make good budget “thrash” bikes for woods racing when it’s muddy or need some practice.

Why aren't you using a small chair or the central stand of the bike to stand on it with your left leg when kicking the bike over? You will be sitting on a higher point and you will have a lot more leverage kicking it over, a lot more pedal travel with a higher impulse and you don't put so much tension on your right leg. What if it kicks back and your thigh is bent over to the back? if you are over the bike standing upright, you might have a chance saving that knee. Btw cool content you have and super patience. Awesome. keep up the great work. enjoying watching you.
