Noam Chomsky on Media’s "Shameful Moment" in Gaza & How a U.S. Shift Could End the Occupation

www.democracynow.org - As a new 72-hour ceasefire takes hold in Gaza, we turn to part two of our interview with world-renowned dissident and linguist, MIT professor Noam Chomsky. Criticizing U.S. media coverage of the Israeli assault on Gaza, Chomsky says: "It’s a shameful moment for U.S. media when it insists on being subservient to the grotesque propaganda agencies of a violent, aggressive state." Chomsky also discusses his longstanding view that popular pressure at home is critical to ending the U.S. government’s backing for Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and Gaza. “The United States continues to provide the critical, decisive support for the atrocities," he says. "Sooner or later, it’s possible-and that’s really up to us-that domestic pressure will compel the U.S. government to join the world on this issue. That will be a decisive change.”

Our politicians need care packets desperately. They are in short supply of baby wipes and knee pads.

That "Face the Nation" propaganda piece is exactly why I don't watch the Sunday talk shows. Too biased towards the interventionist right wing.

If Israel must hide its actions behind the most evil groups in the world, what does that say about Israel?

DomremySurMeuse I think you'll find it is the other way around. While the world is focused on some of the most heinous actions in such an evil, aggressive, fascistic, man made situation, other morally bankrupt individuals and groups are using this as cover to launch equally despicable acts. On the day of 9/11 someone one the staff of the British government was caught stating that ''today would be a great day to bury bad news''. The less said about the Israeli government, Netanyahu in particulars, comment's regarding 9/11 and the opportunities it opened up for him and his cronies, the better. If only the American public were aware. It's no small task keeping the majority of a population either in denial, misinformed or outright lied to. It is being perfected though, years of practice will have that result, not to mention the centuries of tactics employed by the British Empire abroad.

I hope Chomsky at least understands that Israel still provides Gaza with food, water, electricity and medical supplies, even though since 2005 Israel had left Gaza completely - to the PA, but in 2007 Hamas took over - and from that time on, Israel had been under a constant barrage of rockets and mortar shells from Gaza till this very day?

What do you mean? Gaza is still under the Israel occupation. Hamas may take over the leadership but they have to go through a bureaucratic system where Israel makes the ultimate decision for the region. The water is 96% unsuited for consumption, Israel counts the calories of food to be sent to prevent civilians from dying of starvation but the people mainly are children still malnourished . And the electricity is still cut of in most areas. Technically, since Gaza is under siege and blockade from Israel, Hamas has the right to resist their occupiers through violence if needed if there's no other alternative (I don't condone the violence but every time gazans have peaceful protest, they are suppresed by Israeli army). The very least Israel could do is to provide supplies or at least end the siege and blockade if they want to stop the Hamas' attacks to Israel
