It's no coincidence that the height of the British empire saw some of the worst conditions for the working class at home, too. Industrial capitalism exploits whoever is exploitable, regardless of borders. Occupying India didn't raise the status of destitute factory workers in London, any more than the Iraq war benefited poor American citizens.

Chomsky's insights and breadth of knowledge are profound. His thoughts need more mainline media coverage.

Richard Loofbourrow if he did get coverage on say NPR, which changed its mind about covering him at all, he would be worried about doing something wrong. Of course that doesn't mean he would be wrong but only that he has to reanalyze his arguments again just to be sure. It's not by definition bad and in a way it would force him to think even more critically of himself.

He has never had coverage because of what he says, none of his articles have been published in US media for the last around 70 years. he was once interviewed on Fox, he mentions it in one of his talks, I think they gave him a few minutes. He is a threat to US government - he tells it like it is and the press know not to have anything to do with him.

Chomsky is a modern day Socrates, he pushes buttons, disturbs the complacent, and forces all of us to reconsider our ideas and opinions. He said his best teachers forced him to think for himself.

Most believe the myth that they can achieve success in monetary terms and live in bad faith because of that. This causes them to be blinded by their plight and most think that things are just hunky dory.

From Noam you get very useful information regarding how the society works and ways we can make it a better place for everyone. But so few people care about it. Most of the population are waved and blinded by the media(TV, internet news or social media) without being able to see thing clearly. We need to be cleaver and spread the right words. People should learn critical thinking.

All they can do is well look what XYZ did, not look at what America is doing right now this minute, and one thing I notice is that the fact that the planet is dying seems to be unimportant, less important than what Donald Trump tweeted or this silly endless business about Russia and the elections. Watch Democracy Now from yesterday with Julian Assange, it was really good.

People are unwilling to unionize their own working places. If you can't organize with 20 people you've known for years, there's no chance of real change at any higher level.

The rich getting the wealth, the poor are bleeding. Thats an empire in a nutshell. Doesnt matter if its the roman soldier in germania, the sailor in the navy of Horatio Nelson or the american GI in the jungle of Vietnam or in Baghdad. An empire only benefits the rich at the expense of the poor.

Adventurers probably enjoy empire unless they die early of wounds or disease, and commoners have some vicarious fun feeling superior, and people not running their lives much on logic, having an empire probably is fairly satisfying.

Another very nice selection from the channel author. Hats off. This is not a common question asked of Noam and is relatively interesting. In the end, all the variables I think point toward empire being against the benefit of the people. State-capitalism (faux capitalism) has so many costs and inefficiencies and illusory benefits built in (often hidden), and it still generates massive wealth for a few. If the economy was radically different and class didn’t exist I expect it would be easy to generate high levels of wealth and development and technology for less effort and spread it equitably. Empire is ultimately a sloppy game of trying to seize power for a few. In the cases where corporate wealth is at stake, policy that promotes power wins out. That’s what the ideology dictates. Chomsky sometimes gives examples of that. Such as Cuba.

My immediate thought is international relations theory - realism. The best guarantee of security is to take power at the expense of your neighbour where ever it may arise. Empire being the natural manifestation of this idea, overstretch not withstanding. I'm not sure how to square that with the fact the East India Company's pursuit for dominance was originally funded by bankers as opposed to the state, though

What a really un-educated comment ! Isabella didn't finance the trips to the New World to spread her language / culture / genes to the South of The Western Hemisphere. She financed those expeditions to extract the wealth from that Region w / as few people left to resist the Occupation of Columbus & The Conquistadors. Your perversion of history is as appalling as the out-come of 1492.

@@laserbrain7774 :: Isabella ? Ferdinand ? There is no difference between the two as the results were the same :: the contact w / the Spanish was devastating to the Natives. Who / What gives Isabella the temerity to interfere in the lives of "heathens" ? "Heathens" ? The Spanish didn't even bathe regularly. Those two monarchs certainly didn't appreciate the Moors in Spain AND the Moors were far-less inhumane in Spain than the Spanish in the Western-Hemisphere.

@@cliffgaither Obviously they didn't appreciate the moors. Ferdinand and Isabella were able to organize and fund the columbus expedition because they had just completed expelling the moors from spain.
