I talked with young russian people, they were my tenants at that time, in 2015; they told me they are not interested in politics, and also told me that anyways, protesting is forbidden, so why bother with it. These were young, college educated people, and seemed smart; but they were passive and defeated already. Frightening.

Well it is a greater and sadder state of affairs for Ukraine. putin is trying to decimate this independent country. The russians still have a physically intact homeland - the Ukrainians do not.

Assume that most people refusing to answer do not support the war, otherwise they would happily voice their support. This indicates a large percentage of Russians are against the war. How long can the Russian autocracy function with so much bubbling discontent beneath the surface?

Why the Russians keep referring to “politics” baffles me.

It's easy to talk about the cowardice of others when you don't live under a dictatorship.

If you don't pay attention to politics... politics will pay attention to you soon or later and not necessarily in a good way

Most are not being truthful to keep from being thrown in jail. To me, they all look like they know exactly what's happening. Almost no eye contact after they hear the question, the response about the sanctions, the summer house, the inappropriate smiles. Interesting that there were a couple of people who were all in about the invasion. Definitely not the majority of this small sample.

@@Insert-Retarded-Reply-Here Yeah, it most certainly does not help the Russian society. Russians had the opportunity to protest in big numbers when the screws were not so tight. They did not take it for the "fear of going to jail" (or because they simply did not want to). Now the only thing ahead for Russians is full mobilisation, war time economy and iron curtain coming down. Russians were so afraid that *some* of them would end up in jail, while now *all* of them will live in one.

@@Puleczech bro my dad protested on black October in the 90s alongside thousands of others when Yeltsin dissolved the parliament and essentially declared himself dictator (which Putin inherited from Yeltsin). This was the weakest point of the history of the Russian federation yet what happened to those demonstrators is borderline massacre. You should’ve been there too, let’s see how brave you are when snipers on rooftops gun you down, which is exactly what happened

@@rossmackenzie7993 no, it's not you. In my travels in Asia over the years, I've encountered lots of Russia tourists. They're usually surly, unfriendly, & generally not a happy lot. In an old documentary about the fall of the Soviet Union, a Russian was narrating his observation on this disposition of the Russian people (in the context of the McDonald's that had opened). He said they had to train the McDonald's employees to smile & be cheerful & friendly. And it was something that did not come naturally. It has it's roots in a culture of repression, paranoia, & distrust.

@TFactory The funny thing about propaganda is that it goes both ways. It can be made to paint the truth as well as fiction, but the fact is Russia is one of the best countries to weather economic sanctions because they can source their own raw materials in their own borders. Anything else, they can import from China. The amount of Western goods that will slip in through unauthorized channels is also impossible to stop. The country ranks in at least the top 5% of global income per capita, when accounted for on a purchasing power parity (PPP) basis, and last I checked over 80% of Russians own their own home, compared with 62% in the USA. I think they are doing fine, personally.
