This was a shorter, alternate version of the original pilot episode, where the opening title appeared *AFTER* the meteor barrage, and Don Forbes (as the "News Anchor") declared, "Alpha Control's final analysis on Gemini 12's flight indicates, unhappily, that the spaceship has either been destroyed, or must be presumed....LOST IN SPACE!" The scenes with John and Don facing the one-eyed giant- and Will destroying it with a laser pistol- were eliminated from this version as well.

Bernard Herrmann was *NOT* pleased that Irwin "borrowed" several of hIs 20th Century-Fox movie scores (including"The Day the Earth Stood Still") for this unaired pilot without his permission. But the studio owned those cues, and there wasn't much Bernie could do about it.

You're welcome! Music from "Beneath the 12-Mile Reef", "Joruney to the Center of the Earth" and "Garden of Evil" were also "borrowed".

I like it. Not as catchy as the tunes used but this has a more mysterious theme.

Their mission was to go to Alpha Centauri not back to Earth. Dr. Smith wanted to go back to Earth.

Shame on them: 'Dr. John Robinson' but not 'Dr. Maureen Robinson'.

In the unaired pilot, Don Forbes noted, "With {Dr. Robinson}, marking the first time in history that anyone but an adult male has passed the International Space Administration's grueling physical and emotional screening for intergalactic flight will be his wife, Dr. Maureen Robinson- the distinguished biochemist of the New Mexico College of Space Medicine." That wasn't mentioned in the "official" pilot episode, "The Reluctant Stowaway". Maureen eventually became the space equivalent of "Ruth Martin" from "LASSIE". 😏
