No Place to Hang Out: The Danger of Oil Sites

Ғылым және технология

No Place to Hang Out, a new CSB safety video, tells the tragic story of Devon Byrd and Wade White, two Mississippi teenagers who were killed October 31, 2009, in an oil tank explosion. Narrated and filmed with the help of Devon and Wade's parents and friends, the goal of the video is to help educate young people and others about the danger from explosions at unsecured oil and gas production sites.

If you've watched other CSB videos, you've seen trained adults vent natural gas into an office building, check for flammable gas with a torch, and countless other things that were likely far dumber than whatever the teenagers were doing.

not really. albeit pumping natural gas into a building and calling it venting was pretty stupid, smoking near oil vapors is not exactly a smart thing to do .. also there was probably other flammable substances in the vapors besides the oil , read natural gas...

@mike sixx People in the town didn't know they were actively used, some people thought they were water tanks. Here's common sense: teenagers don't have any, significant dangers should be marked as such, and preferably some effort should be made to separate the public from them, e.g. a fence or a sign. Dad even said his son wasn't the sharpest, but what kind of company managed chemical storage like this? That's what's really retarded, that place looked like it was abandoned before the explosion

I live in Kansas. I this area there are a lot of oil wells that are privately owned. Most of these wells were drilled by oil companies under a lease agreement with the land owners and the leases have long since expired. That leaves individuals in charge of something that they may not fully understand. It’s not just the oil companies that cause this kind of problem.

@@mikeischangingplaces one thing about oil production is that it is like a gold rush. There are responsible companies, then there are irresponsible individuals that think they are oil companies that have 0 business in the energy sector. From the looks of the location it was an independent producer. They generally break all the rules because they know that the ABC agencies focus on the big fish more for the dough. So they slip under the radar. However there is also this thing called common sense too that obviously was not in abundance.

It is amazing how something able to cause so much damage and destruction could be just left out there in the open like that. Above ground unsecured landmines just waiting for some uninformed person to accidentally set it off are dotted around the country. How many? Still? I need to do some research now, that looks like a place my friends and I would have hung out at when we were younger. It does seem to be the logic that it looks like an an industrial site so be careful but it isn't fenced in or signed so it can't be that dangerous because the situation was given to the public to evaluate instead of telling the public what the dangers is. That could have been my friends and I when we were younger. For no reason, it should have been common sense to build that fence at the least.

Odd that in every other CSB video they clearly state what action or inaction someone did to put the whole chain of events into play...except here. They just say they hung out there and BOOM. Like the tank was laying in wait for them. I understand the CSB probably wanted to be sensitive to the families of minors but if they were smoking, making a bonfire, etc it should be said. Large petro/oil tanks can be dangerous, but so can driving especially for teens. However, we dont tell teens "just don't drive kids". We tell them specific ways to be safer. Don't speed, text, drink WHILE driving.

The tank was not vented properly and was leaking fumes and with a storm that morning lightening most likely struck the tank causing the explosion. Who cares? Kids are curious by nature. I know I was. Why leave hazards around unprotected and un-signed for them to discover the hard way? There is no easy way to know what an unmarked tank may or may not contain. Even a cheap flashlight that has a loose connection could cause this kind of incident, no smoking required. Kids will smoke. Kids will find places that look or are "cool" to do it. And more accidents will happen. These are easy to prevent with just a bit of additional effort. If this was your kid would you care what caused the explosion or would you be fighting to protect more kids from dying?

actually they were NOT smoking or building fires anywhere near this site. The tank has been there for over 20+ years without incident. Many, many adults that had grown up in the area said that they had even sat on them and shot guns from the top and build campfires next to them while sleeping along side of it because NO ONE had ever been warned that this could happen. If the equipment is properly taken care of THIS CANNOT HAPPEN. That is the problem. With Mississippi not requiring ANY regulations it leaves the innocent public open for danger and they are everywhere in peoples back yards. It LOOKED not only like a water tank, it was in such poor shape everyone in the neighborhood believed it wasn't in operation. My son was one of the victims and he had NEVER been around anything like this and wouldn't have known what it was or that it could explode randomly. Neither would I had I been there with him. Our on senator stated he grew up in the area and hunted around his entire life without reserve. The companies OWN workers weld on these tanks WHILE they are dangerous and could explode at any moment and the companies do nothing to train them the proper way to do the job without fear of injury. They simply do not care about anyone or anything except making money.

Sometimes in the Coast Guard, we Reservists from Sector NY would document and photograph land-based chemical storage/transfer sites in NJ that had less security than KMart. H2S leaking from a open thief hatch or even them being on top of the walkway smoking next to a old oil tank with who know what amount of oil and H2S in it or even being on a phone or having static electricity on em could've made it blown up, but still what where they doing at location with a rusty looking oil tank in the first place? Signs or No SIgns its kinda logical to say that Old Oil Storage tanks at an old location that's not used anymore are bad and no one should be there without proper safety equipment on

Very odd they say no one try's to keep folks out. Where I grew up 40 plus years ago we had several sites next to our pasture. The gates to the site were always locked and the crews that would come do well service work would tell us kids to always stay out of there and not play. So I see this as probably company work force reduction and lack of training. We still have some of the sits on our property and I have noticed they do not lock their gates but the main gates to the pasture will be locked. This being said there are no signs and I am sure if you were in an area where people had more of a chance to stop, this could be a bigger issue. Making sure the well service company's kept the gate locked would be one step but making sure the well service company's let the communities know this is not a place to hang out would also be good. This cost money and not many company's like to spend money but it could probably keep maybe just one more person child or adult from making this mistake.

There is really only one problem here... criminal trespassing. This video sickens me because in the end, if this culture had any respect for the property and belongings of others, this never would have happened. It's also sad that teenagers don't know that any industrial site is dangerous even if it's abandoned but that's the state of American education. But if those teenagers would not have tried to hang out on property that didn't belong to them or their family, they'd still be here today. I'm sick of people placing the blame on others because they failed to learn or teach basic core values, respect and responsibility. Stay off of other people's property!!!

You would need to shoot a hole in it to get oxygen in the tank.(if I remember correctly that's what the mythbusters eventually figured out) when you put holes through things they generally don't explode. (If the holes are proportionately big enough) now one of these oil tanks made out of reasonably thick steel with atmospheric venting. You'd have a much better chance causing that to explode by shooting it especially if you steal core rounds. (Please don't shoot things that don't belong to you.)

People smoke cigarettes in their cars, what's the difference in this case? It's obvious to you, but for some teenager, they might see a site like this and just assume that it's safe. They don't know the meaning of the word volatile, or fuel-air mixture. They just see a big, sealed tank with liquid in it, how the hell is my cigarette going to light it? The reason for this video is explicitly stated in the description, and it is to make sure kids know that these tanks are dangerous. Some of these comments about personal responsibility are just completely missing the point. It's like once someone is dumb or makes a bad decision they just deserved to die or something. The message of this video is not "this could have happened to anyone". Dad even says his son wasn't the sharpest, and multiple people in the video alluded to the really poor decision making on the part of those kids. The point is, make dangers clear. Tell your kids. If you know someone who does something dumb like this, tell them. And if there's a significant, life-threatening danger in the area, put up a fence and a sign. It's that simple. It's the law in other states, it's common sense to not smoke on a chemical storage tank, but it's also common sense not to put a large concentration of flammable chemicals within easy, unmarked access to the public. This video wouldn't exist if it were the law to put up a sign that says there are highly explosive chemicals in the area and combustible vapors, absolutely no smoking, no trespassing. The CSB makes these videos to stop people from dying

It was NOT properly ventilated which would have PREVENTED this from happening. There are a number of issues involved in this incident. Most of these tanks are located on land leased from the property owner by the developer who owns the mineral lease - thus the responsibility for fencing them in should be addressed at the time the lease to actual place a facility on site should be addressed. So that issue goes back to the state laws. In many other states such facilities are well fenced in with locked gates to stop people stealing the oil. Why fences weren't put in place around these places there is beyond me, but maybe the lease laws may shed some light on it. However, I can't understand how these kids could NOT know how dangerous oil tanks were. Back in the 1960s there were news reports of oil tanks fires in places in the USA and elsewhere that demonstrated how huge a fire hazard they were. This was reinforced with the historical accounts of the early days of the oil industry in the USA, such films as 'Hellfighters' and the events of the invasion of Kuwait. Almost every decade of the last fifty to sixty years have had news reports of the dangerous explosions and fires on oil rigs and oil storage facilities. You'd have to be deaf and blind NOT to learn how dangerous and volatile anything to do with oil is. I'm sorry the kids died, but they should've known better as all of the information was frequently there before them if they ever took notice of, or thought about, enything beyond their arm's length.

I know of a camping resort that has a set up exactly like the one depicted in this video, located just a few yards from where we pitch our tents. It is not secured, and I have climbed all over those tanks. My main safety concern at the time was the potential release of hydrogen sulfide. I've heard a lot of concern about the potentially-lethal threat from hydrogen sulfide, and the fact that I could smell sulfur at the campsite caused me concern. Explosion hazard was not high on my list. In a few months, the campsite will host its annual 5k marathon, and hundreds of runners will pass near (50 to 100 yards) these tanks. It would be nice to know what kind of hazard they present to us!

Just Google it. Hydrogen sulfide is flammable and explosive (depending on concentration in air), and when burned in air, creates sulfur dioxide and water vapor. Why must you play amateur chemist when all you really need to know is that such storage tanks are not safe to be around or to commandeer as jungle gym's, shooting platforms or observation towers.

Why aren't oil companies ought to secure and clean up those sites?

Why would they just leave crude oil out like that? No body at the refinery or the company that did the pumping/drilling thought they should harvest what's left in that tank to round out there numbers for the month?

This was a small scale oil operation and probably fifty bucks of crude in that tank

It may have even been empty as it's the fumes that are explosive, not the oil, if this was filled with oil it wouldnh have happened
