My lovely elderly neighbor passed and she had a large (100 or so) Hummel figurines. We fretted about who would want them but two women bought all of them at the estate sale. Estate sale prices, but they definitely wanted them. True story.

My stuff keeps me busy, engaged; not just sitting and waiting for whatever. I tried the retire, nice beautiful easy-peasy condo - going to be a lady of leisure. I became mad with boredom, nothing to do, could not putter around, dig a hole, rake some dirt. Sold the easy-peasy condo, purchased a home with a small yard a shop and stuff. Happy as a clam. Dig holes, rake in the dirt. When I go, just open the doors and say free.

Go into a house today and be bored stiff. Endless white decor without so much as a magazine for which to sit and read. There may be a well-placed art book on a coffee table, angled just so for display, but that's it. Most wouldn't know Duncan Phyfe from Dunkin Donuts.

I remember being drug to antique shops and auctions while my parents searched out Hummels, depression dishes, etc. Never wanted to clutter up my house as an adult.

Hummels . .haha! That's a crack up! I had relatives who had that stuff and I there was no way I wanted those things! Even though they thought some of them were "collectors" items or valuable.

When my sister would visit our mom she would glean things from her house. Mom had LOTS of hummels and sis would put her name on them so she would inherit them! Well greedy sis had a rude awakening…🤣🤣🤣. They are worth NOTHING!! It’s really something that when death is about to happen or happens GREED sets in. I have enough stuff of my own I don’t need anyone else’s stuff. Greed is so evil but so many people have it and it causes many family feuds. Not worth it in my opinion…let them have it then their kids can fight over it! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

After 20 years in a house we had to pack everything up for a renovation. We were able to unload about half our junk. Now I just have to keep the little lady from re-accumulating new stuff.

Have worked quite a few estate sales and it’s true. No one wants the hummels, the china sets, the porcelain dolls, the toy cars, the barbies, the fans, etc. They buy what they can use in their day-to-day

I love the lead. No one wants your hummels. I remember those things. The only thing I miss, but not really, is my garden, though I know I wouldn't want to do all that work anymore. So I'm going to take golf lessons. Dont tell a real golfer but as a kid I loved putt putt. So now I'll try a bigger putter. Downsizing was not hard for me. It was all dead weight, much of it inherited most of it meaningless to me. I buy books occasionally but mostly I use a digital library. I have a different view of things now and I feel lighter...unencumbered.

I mean... I want your Hummels! My mom (in her 70s) really likes them, and always wished for them. But couldn't afford them. And now that people are selling their Hummels on Facebook marketplace I am buying them as presents for my mom. And she is always delighted! So far she has 5. I'm going to hunt around and see if I can find another one in time for Christmas. No, I don't want them as an inheritance, nor does my sister. But our mom likes them right now, and that's the point. I understand that this is probably a little clip with a good message of not being trapped by your things. My mom definitely has downsized a lot, especially after she was the one who cleared out my grandma's house. (She said "I'm not doing that to you girls" which I appreciate) It was needed. She still likes little knickknacks and decorations more than I do. I think it's fine. She decorates differently for each season, and my children think it's fun to see how she's decorated since the last time they were there.

“-why should your stuff control your life?” This question seems pretty disingenuous in this materialistic society. When people’s status is measured by accumulation (or one’s potential to accumulate), it’s difficult to escape. For me, it comes down to the capacity to accept change, which unfortunately diminishes with age. We made a successful transition from a full-sized, detached house to a condo @8 years ago. When undergoing this process, we discovered: 1. A 17 yard dumpster will not be too large. 2. When encountering indecision, toss it. 3. Our kids really didn’t want the family credenza. QED.

Omg! My mother in law used to collect hummels.. I always hated them because I’ve collected 18th and 19th century antiques my entire life. When I married her son, she wanted to start me on Hummel collecting and I put a stop to that right quick. No hummels in my house.
