You'd more likely find ways for the state to pay for your kids schooling abroad instead of actually doing something productive that requires skills you dont have & without any "additional benefits" over and above your salary because if the motivation to deliver public sector services only appears when forced to use those services then you are not there to serve the public, only your own self interest.

If NHI becomes law .. expect to lose 90% of your doctors, healthcare practitioners, surgeons to greener pastures overseas.

It is not that easy. The bureaucracy to prove one's equivalence as a MD elsewhere takes time and money for the vetting process /re-doing examinations etc. One also needs to secure a job elsewhere. There are many tradeoffs to fleeing.

Thats being alarmist. Why are existing players fighting this national insurance when the same runs succesfully in the UK and doctors from all over the world flock to the UK to work there. If some of those Doctors leave there is plenty of candidate Doctors waiting in the wings, they can recruit from the Rest of Africa as well.

Like tax payers, rates payers, and insurance The major concern is that this government fucks up everything it touches… there’s daily blackouts, water crises, businesses fleeing the African market, coming food shortages, a downgrading of our currency… failing SAA, failing ports and transnet. Mark my words - the government, if involved will collapse healthcare too

The bill literally states that they will cover all medical expenses and those who the government deams as being able to afford medical aid would need to contribute to that scheme. The chats from discovery is out of fear that they won't be able to perform their primary role in the private medical industry, because the state will have a monopoly on it.

Section 27 of the Constitution provides that everyone has the right to have access to health care services, including reproductive health care services and no one may be refused emergency medical treatment. It does not give you the right to have private medical aid, only access to health care services. So if the government provides health care then your constitutional right to healthcare is fulfilled.

The NHI is used across the UK , every person employed should have their contributions deducted on a monthly basis from their salary. What makes things difficult here is the access to health care service instantly. One has to make an appointment before seeing your doctor which could be in a week time which I find it ridiculous. In the events of emergency you can visit hospital with long ques.

Ehh if you read their articles they're attempting to escape goat riots and majority public backlash. Discovery's article mentions "decades" and "insurmountable costs" and "private strengthening". They're clearly against it but passively so.

We don't need NHI just employ the qualified personell and CEOs to run our public hospitals. Cadre deployment by ANC is destroying our health care system.

I was on a 2 day healthcare summit for a medical practise … discovery were one of the main speakers. They are pushing heavily into remote monitoring, where it’s Hospital At Home, as well as Telehealth (using AI to diagnose and manage patients remotely) They also spoke or bulk purchasing of medicines, private and governmental- to get cheaper medicines.

Exactly as I thought, Discovery are making sure they reap the spoils as well.

We need to focus on the positives here... When the ANC destroys the entire health care system in South Africa, at least the IMPORTANT people (The ANC cabinet, their friends and family members) will still travel to the US, EU, UK, China and Russia, in private jets to receive healthcare when they need it. This will all be paid for by taxpayers. Even more positive is that they can work in a shopping trip to London and Dubai, checking out their flats and have lunch and dinner with their friends, the Guptas, while they are at it. We will be in the fortunate position to pay for the shopping sprees as well. On another positive point, the IMPORTANT people have thought it good to exclude themselves from the pesky blackouts...there is no sense for them to suffer from an Eskom that they have fckd up... Fortunately, the IMPORTANT people will also not be affected by the increased cost of living as ALL of their expenses, including but not limited to travel, food, entertainment, clothes, education, housing etc. are paid for by the taxpayer, no questions asked. They have allocated themselves an average of 56 highly skilled and trained police officers EACH to protect them and their families.... That is such a relief!

One can imagine that once NHI a law, a helter-skelter process of amendments will follow to try and stabilise it. As of now, there seems nothing concrete to guarantee it sustainability.

And why is the media only giving voice to those fighting against this bill and none to those supporting it? A single narrative is being pushed and we are hearing only voices from 1 side. Even though I understand the points being made by mans, I gotta say that it's kinda insulting for him to say that those affordable scheme options would make private medical care more affordable and it would just piss off the clients who give Discovery 4-6k per family by telling them their plan is equivalent to someone's R450 contribution to the scheme.

Who would be the ruling party 1, 5, 10 to 15 years from now and will they, as a majority still want this to go ahead? So this can become a mess really quick.

We can only wonder what the NHI will cover, probably the lowest package that a medical aid like discovery covers at 100% of the cost to NHI than what discovery spends for that cover, the rest of the real private health care will still be paid for by individuals via medical aid schemes. In short, this is a way for the government to pay R1000 for a medicine that a medical aid would limit to R100 because that is how much it should cost at worst.

The way I understand it is that R200 Bn is going to be allocated to "fix" the current infrastructure. It is not said what time period is allocated to do this. And then it will take 10-15 years for the full implementation of the NHI. Only then will medical aid schemes be affected. So relax for the next 20 years or so...🙂

It will most certainly take 10 + years to implement BUT the NHI tax will start ASAP. Check who is against an NHI implementation which will benefit all citizens when countries like the UK have a very functional Health System modelled along the same lines? If some of the doctors want to leave there is plenty of doctors still in school and from the Rest of Africa. In fact they should not stop with NHI, they should go ahead and implement a National Social Security Pension Fund as well.

I lived in the uk for 10 years, the nhs is bad, 6 months waiting list to see a specialist, people put on death pathways because there is no capacity to treat, etc.

@@janco333 yet the NHS helped them through a Covid pandemic, including looking after the Prime Minister Boris Johnson when he went down with Covid. Nurses and Doctors in the UK fight to be on the NHS payroll. Waiting lists for specialist care is common even in the very private sector, you could , for example, have to wait for an organ donor for organ transplant.

Another "Eskom" waiting to happen..

"Yea we don't worry about it at all.. they will roll it out and not affect anyone... It very vague, doest define much and oh yes and no one knows how it will be financed..." How stupid is this guy? How are you not worried about vagueness and about how this will be funded?

The medical aids in South Africa caused it for themselves with the extremely high premiums. It’s becoming unaffordable for most people to have medical aid. If NHI is implemented correctly it could benefit the masses that have been deprived of medical care. Let’s be positive and embrace NHI. By the way our private hospitals,doctors and medical aid have made millions over the years so like everything good things come to an end soon or later. The same also apply to the ruling party.

@@sfortuin9710 Cuba has an abundance of doctors, we even asked them for help during covid. They would be willing to work for people, they were brought up that way what with never having fleeced people for services.

If you worried that we going to miss their expertise then let me tell that there are always others that will come forward. If you and I die today then there are better people then us who will fill our place and probably do a better job. Nobody is indispensable.

@@iqbalaniff1650 yes I get that but will you be saying the same thing if you or a family member cannot get medical treatment because of an over burdened hospital. At least we have a decent public hospital in the western cape compared to the rest of the county

South African professionals are funny to me sometimes, these Medical Doctors somehow believe they can be medical doctors in other countries, I mean to achieve that they will need to go to medical school again in those countries in order to be admitted to their medical boards, so funny. 🤣

Actually my sister is a nurse and has recently emigrated to the US. She only needed to do an entrance exam.

Most of these healthcare professionals have already migrated their qualifications overseas just in case. They will be snapped up overseas - will be a shame when no surgeons or doctors left … and there’s a 2 year wait to see a nurse, like there is in Canada where NHI is failing

LOL. Not True. I know many Colleagues who are working overseas who merely had to either write an entrance exam or do a Board interview to obtain registration. Here is a bit of News. ..there is a World Wide Shortage of Medical Professionals and most Western Governments are prepared to bend the registration process to keep their Citizenry happy especially around Election time. This will only accelerate the emigration of Healthcare Professionals of all types and Hues LOL.

You obviously don't know anyone South African who works as doctors overseas. Some African countries have to go to medical school abroad, but not South Africans, same with engineers, teachers, etc. Of course with the ANC and their corrupt qualifications, who knows in future SA have to face the same barriers.

The private hospitals, private medical aid and private healthcare is worth billions provided SOLELY by the private sector. The government is solely responsible for the state health services with taxpayer money and is a total failure and 3rd world quality. The NHI will not be able to purchase healthcare from the private sector which is a more expensive service as it cannot with the money available at present spend the available money effectively on public sector healthcare. Accessibility in rural areas will not improve whether it is NHI or private medical aid due to geographical realities. Accessibility and availability of private healthcare resources in urban areas are based on the real need and economics of private healthcare. In other words the capacity of resources will not be able to cater for state demand. This is socialistic and communistic interference in the private sector and an ideology that will cause the deterioration and destruction of healthcare in South Africa.
