No Longer PHEV after 1.5 years Ownership later "BMW F15 X5 40e"

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Well, it's true, the title is not a click bait. My precious BMW F15 X5 40e no longer a true PHEV. At most it's now a mild hybrid until I find the funds to repair the module that got fried. Watch the video till the end for more details.

Chester, probably can think of 2020 45e model upgrade, heard it has less problem, just the roadtax 1.6k scare me a bit, thanks for sharing by the way

Hey Chester, have you try some workshop that might be able to repair your faulty module? I am seeing more and more workshop provide repair to EME module. Perhaps can save some money on this option?

So far, I have not come across anyone that can repair faulty unit. But I'm sure to keep my faulty unit if there is anyone can repair them at a fraction of the cost. So that I can have a spare unit. Do share workshop that knows how to repair them here

Thank you for your review about thw hybrid system. With a budget of around 200k-300k, would you recommend me to get 2020 740LE LCI or x5 45e, or should just consider to get 530i LCI if want to keep for longer-term instead. Thank you

Already replied to you on another video. But to expand further, 530i for long term use. At least maintenance will be much lower compared to hybrid system

Any devices take power supply from power grid are relaying heavily on how clean and stable the supply from grid. If you live close to industrial areas in Malaysia, voltage fluctuations and surges are high plus on top of regular thunder storms. That is why UPS is very popular and high demand in this country. Please note fuse can only protect power surge/spike; noise filter(LC filter) cleans power noise and voltage regulators regulates voltage fluctuations. These are the 3 types of harms coming from power grid to any of our electrical devices ( includes EV or Phev). The reliability of EV and PHEV is no longer dependant on the car itself but now also external input too.

I had the same issue with my plugin hybrid X5 before. My mechanic told me that 22kw 3phase is not suitable for small plug in hybrid battery. It will broke your transformer part when it overcharged.I sold it and get BYD Atto 3 instead 😅 than you will enjoy 100% of green vehicles until you forget the smell of petrol anymore ✌️✌️

Thank you for the honest and informative review. I was leaning toward getting one of these because of the "attractive" pricing, but I was very suspicious of why the car would be priced so low as Malaysia has a pretty strong market for BMW's. So i was suspecting that there are some serious issues that many people are facing, my main suspicion was the hybrid battery, which I have heard from other hybrid owner horror stories, is not a cheap replacement. After seeing. your review I have a question, so this model can be used without charging the Hybrid battery? But the fuel efficiency without the Hybrid battery is really bad (or like a normal petrol SUV)? Could you own this car and it work properly without ever plugging it in? or would that eventually cause the hybrid battery to completely die and make the car unusable till the hybrid battery was replaced? Do you happen to know the cost of the hybrid battery? not sure if you have this answer, but could the hybrid part of the car be disconnected completely? I also read that if the hybrid battery is low, the car can charge it while driving, but it is at the expense of using more petrol. Are you able to control whether the car charges the battery while driving or not? Sorry for all the questions, but you do seem to know quite a bit about this model. Thank you very much in advance, please keep posting the great videos!

Sorry, I did not understand the acronym PHEV, so the Hybrid part of the car is not working anymore for you and now its just a petrol gas guzzler?

If the X5 is covered under warranty, I guess it's less of a headache for the owners but then again you still need to leave it for some time to repair/replace parts. Yes, you can drive the 40e without charging from the electric grid, but fuel efficiency will drop drastically. I just made a shorts video about the driving range you get without charging, you might want to check that video. I don't know what's the efficiency of the hybrid battery if I continue to drive without plug-in charging but the car does charge itself during brake regeneration and if you put on sports mode during driving it will charge the battery quite fast. From my understanding you can convert and remove the entire hybrid system to a regular petrol car. I was told many F30 330e owners already doing that conversion.

To answer this question, it really depends on what's "not working". For my case the KLE comfort charging it's not working, then yes you can still drive the car as a petrol car but it's not going to be fuel efficient due to the added weight for those hybrid systems. Now if your hybrid battery or electric motor dies, then you're unable to drive the car at all

@@chestercheng75 Hello again, thank you for the reply. That is the exact information I was looking for. I am wondering if it is possible to work around the hybrid system or just disable it all together. I saw a video for an S400H mercedes where the common problem is the hybrid system which leaves the care unable to start at all. But one guy had retro fit a petrol starter so the car now does not have to rely on the hybrid system at all> The more I read about these hybrid cars the more I want to stay away. Its a shame because I really do want an X5, but the hybrid model seems to be the only option in Malaysia.

I'm looking to get a g05 45E, I don't know how the battery behaves in a used car with 100,000 km, and I plan to drive another 100-150,000 km with the car I bought. I'm thinking if the mild hybrid 3.0D 286hp or 45E is better

The 8k is not worth it. Sell it off and cut your losses early. Depreciated 70k, +8k and who knows what other, more expensive and complicated issues down the line. Might as well add that to fund a new(er) car. And agreed, the 1st gen hybrid in the F15 is really problematic, this is due to it being BMW's 1st hybrid X5. The G05 is vastly improved in terms of build quality, spec and more importantly, the reliability. Trade it in for the newer G05 model if budget allows. 2023 MY demo X5 45e's can be had from RM380k (2k -5k mileage) and you can nego lower, stock is plenty, dealers are motivated to move them on due to the X5 50e LCI launching soon. G05 45e can get up to 77km pure EV range, in real world between 50-65+ km depending on driving behaviour. Plus the B58 i6 engine is smooth, and dead realiable.

@@chestercheng75 That's the sensible choice. Focus on your asset building first. Remember, these cars are expensive to run and are first and foremost depreciating assets. The prices for these cars are only going down (all cars, BMW, Volvo, MB etc. ) Maybe in the future, when you're ready next year, you can upgrade to a full BEV. 1 year old mint BMW Ix40 sports are under 340k already. They will only keep dropping in value. I wish you good luck with your current X5, hopefully (touch wood) no more issues. Side note, it's always nice to see a real estate exec leading by example (building their personal property portfolio, and not just selling properties) Putting your money where your mouth is, so to speak. 💪🏽
