    If you price a job reasonably and do good work you won’t have a hard time. You may have to travel further than you would normally go. Things are changing and we as professionals have to change with the market. If you’re not getting work, you may have to team up with someone who is overwhelmed with work.

    The prices is what’s killing most of them from what I’ve seen…. Being a Handyman, historically speaking has NEVER been a glamorous job. But the last few years has brought on what I like to call the “Milwaukee Handyman” These are the types don’t understand what a “Temporary imbalance” is. I’ve been small all my life… at 8yo I was told the story of Icarus, and I took it to heart. Stay small and humble, and you’ll never need to leave the town you live in.

    Everyone got used to the big money. Myself included. That 2019-23 stretch was 8 days a week months at a whack. Side gig for me, but it filled the other 80 hrs besides my full time job. 😂. That's my balance. The side gig made me than the day job, but the day job is secured and has bennies. The issue with full time handyman is like you said, it's dependent on so many factors. It's just like construction. Ebbs and flows. When it's hot, its HOT and hopping. When it's not.... it makes you wonder if you picked the wrong career.😂

    I lost my job when the lockdowns happened. I moved from London and set up a little enterprise and my reviews are perfect. I do everything pretty much and I go above and beyond I actually think I undrcharge. When I first started I had about 10 local opposition now there must be about 50. I'm in the UK and it is the same situation here.

    Great take on the industry and what people need to do to brand their business. Long term is the only way. I am a big believer in marketing over advertising. I built a one man 6 figures business in two years with zero advertising costs. Pure marketing to a specific demographic.

    Hi Allen. Have said hello to you a couple of times at the Carmichael HD. Excellent content. Pricing almost parallel with mine. I always follow up with a phone call a day or two later. I retired from GC work 12 years ago but have yet to take a day off. I love what I do, let my customers know how much I appreciate them and they fall over themselves referring me to their friends and relatives. I do not care to do work for prop managers or real estate ' professionals '. An old friend in the RE business, Lita Gitt of Fair Oaks, told me to pick an area near to where I live and farm it DAILY. I'm still reaping the harvest. Many thanx for your insightful videos. See you at the HD.

    I’m the average joe who can read and put a puzzle together but it comes down to TIME how long will it take me to get it done and can I wait. So one of my irrigation heads broke during a hot spell so time was a factor my landscaper said he could fix it for $200 I asked around and that was about the going price. I just couldn’t justify the of $200 for a $25 head ended up replacing it myself took an hour but I got it done. Yes if the cost was about $100-$125 I probably would have had it installed. Seems handyman have gotten quite expensive so like me the average joe will be doing most of their repairs.

  • @handymanjourney

    @handymanjourney

    8 ай бұрын

    Totally, it does come down to whether or not the homeowner has the time to repair it themselves. There are a lot of people that raise their rates pretty drastically because they could during the last few years and a lot of those people are going to either have to lower their rates or go out of business. But it does cost a lot of money to run a business. We would be at about $200 for that project as well.

    If anything there is a drought in the labor field. Has been a trend for the last 5 years and is not getting better. In our Facebook group one of the main complaints is we can’t keep up with the work and we can’t find people who want to work. I know very few Handymen that are not booked out for a month. If you live in a rural or smaller city tings may be a little different The economy is doing well despite the higher interest rates which are coming down. Not as fast as we would like. This is not my opinion just data from the Federal Reserve. But this is also keeping people in their homes longer than before and in my market I find them wanting to do improvements and paying more attention to maintenance. I would agree the marketing should become an ongoing component for your business.

    You must live in California or some small City, I have been self employed as a handyman since 2007. I started my handyman service. My marketing is word of mouth. I never hire help, just me and my wife. We stay very busy in a neighborhood of 700 houses. We also work in several other neighborhoods just from word of mouth. I have never advertised, never put our name on our trucks, no uniforms. We have always made well over 6 figures a year after all deductions and taxes. We have 50 deck stains waiting, siding jobs, bath remodels, phone rings non stop, we do as much as we can handle, then sub the rest to Mexicans with no compete contracts, pay them 60 percent of the job, we keep 40 and over see the jobs, I do drive about 35-40k miles a year. Our work trucks are 1996 Chevy 2500 and 1991 Chevy 1500. Bought both in 2007. It's way cheaper to rebuild a truck than it is to buy new. They key to it all? Live like your broke and later in life live like no body else. Ya 6th grade was as far as I got,
