As a retired remodeling contractor, your advice is spot on. To the "as long as you are here" crowd, "If you have the money I have the time. "Mike

A good topic for starting a handyman service (or any service business) is liability insurance. This opens up more opportunities than it costs. Commercial customers require it. The cheap competition doesn't have insurance and can't bid on that work. Mike

Ray… I have some PM companies who manage BUSINESS properties where I charge $125 for each trip. But I also do a lot of work for a couple of landlords with multiple apartments. Some of their projects take multiple days or weeks. I’ve realized I can’t really charge a trip fee for every day I go to an apartment on a longer remodel (flooring, cabinet installs, etc). How do you manage this scenario?

I started 10 years ago at $20 an hour lol. I can t wait to fire some bad clients. I had one guy who now falls into my red flag which is DIY'ers if they are a carpenter already or a handy person they are used to cheaper project costs and they will not like a profitable bid. Anyways I fired that guy after he turned the first bid down I said that I wasn't interested in the bathroom.

In my opinion, watch your fiances in your business. Make sure you're happy with what you're making. I seems that most businesses fail because they lose more than they make. Overall great video.

Probably a stupid question, but but how much would you charge to do an estimate?

  • @bulletproofhandyman

I rarely have to charge, but when I do it's usually $125. Most of the time they give me some approved work that I can do at the property to cover the trip or they send enough pictures for me to accurately estimate for free.

Great video and recommendations. We are guilty of the "free estimate". What is a recommended amount to ask for?

  • @bulletproofhandyman

    1. Free if they can send pictures and measurements. 2. Free if there is approved billable work I can do when I go to the property to cover the trip. 3. Charge your trip minimum for estimates. 4. Do them for free for loyal clients who hire you frequently.

I'm pretty certain that believing the hype is not a direct cause of a business failing. I could be wrong, but I've been believing the hype and supporting my family with a very solid business for 4 years and it seems like the more I believe it the better I do. Are you sure you're not just jealous? It's okay to be a little bit jelly sometimes, especially if you've never put in 12 hours a day, 7 days a week working hard towards something that matters to you. It probably feels weird watching other people succeed while sitting back full of envy. Or maybe you're just a troll. Either way, welcome to the channel!

@@bulletproofhandyman ha. Quit lying to everyone saying they can make big bucks. You know the truth is that 95% of people could never make what you do. You just happen to be in the right area. Why don't you tell the truth instead of selling false hope.

I already tell them constantly that if they live in a bigger city they'll make more and in a smaller town they'll make significantly less. I have entire episodes that dive deep into the extremely wide range of possibilities both high and low.
