No Gods Besides a Solver: the Mindset and Approach of Modern Professional Players

Ойындар

In a long (mostly strategy-less) video, I breakdown the specific, reproducible approach and small breakthroughs that I've made to advance from a mediocre mid-stakes grinder to a high-stakes professional over the last ten years, with a focus on "playing to win" over any other philosophy.

The “new chess opening” analogue is really good. I often explain GTO/equilibrium to people in this way: even Magnus Carlsen, arguably the GOAT of chess, will choose sub-optimal, slightly losing openings against highly-rated players just because they’re not as well-trodden of lines, and Magnus believes that if even super-GMs have to fall back on real-time problem-solving rather than thorough study, he can execute an edge over them, EVEN IN objectively sub-optimal positions.

Best Poker related content anywhere! Been following you since you first made your channel and posted it on the /poker subreddit. I'm just a scrubby 5NL Grinder who started taking poker seriously because of you. I'm in my early 20's and in the next couple years this will be my living. I cant think you enough for showing me a whole other side to poker and when I do make it to the higher stakes you bet your ass im purchasing your course!

@@AlvinTeachesPoker you have been doing a great job - Ive purchased the Run It Once From the Ground Up Cash Course/A month of UpSwing and though it taught me a lot - you are really helping way more and helping become a better player on and off the table. I can only hope one day I can be close to your level! I even purchased GTO+ the other week because its the only solver than can run on my laptop. Hoping by the end of the year I can be at 200NL

The term you are looking for is Dunning-Kruger effect and overcoming it. As always your videos are great and I agree with just about everything you said. This video I think I didn't disagree with anything. Great advise. I've been playing for almost 20 years BTW and I have bene successful but now I have my own company. I play part time for fun now. Before I knew solvers I worked out a lot of what they do by hand using Flopzilla creating estimations which made my play easier. It didn't replicate a solver but it really improved my game working things out by hand and mathematically.

I enjoyed this one. On the modelling part (modelling is my background), I would add exploring sensitivity to change. Simple example: You're exploring 4-bet pots and you learn to do x, y, z on boards a, b, c. Those differing strategies are entirely driven by the interactions of range and board (since SPR, rake and bet sizings are being held constant). So what happens if one player calls wider? Well, you might end up needing to do y on board b instead. Through this process you get to an understanding of when you might choose x or y for the same board based on what you know about your real-life opponent. Same approach to changes in SPR and so on. Solvers are not so much 'game over' for poker as 'game on' and it's great.

I think humans are fairly inelastic to bet sizing. As far as hands go, some humans are inelastic to board state. The second funniest thing I have ever seen in poker is my opponent went all in on the flop, faster than I could even process the board. He had JJ.

That's a great 50 minutes Alvin, thank you so much! What is your opinion on manually attempting to create balanced ranges, which are simple enough to execute. For example let's say I want to create a balanced flop check raise range, will I be sacrificing alot of EV by including little to no mixes, and all combos are played as mostly pure check/bet? I feel this is alot easier to execute and memorise well. God I need a fucking solver already..

Alvin, first of great information and super helpful, thank you!. For real man. Two questions; finally did get a solver PIO pro and still trying to figure out how if works, on day 7 lol. Where to get the most basic information for the 5th grade? Trying to figure out my pre-flop example: UTG vs Btn on all boards etc. can't find something super basic that shows step by step. Maybe 2nd grade level ! and second question also do you know any preflop charts or any program that I can purchase life simple-pre flop solver, that would give me the GTO pre-flop 100bb, 200bb, 300bb etc on 8 handed cash game 1/3 live with $10 an hour time as a rake with lets say $2-$3 tips? Thanks again for all your the great educational goods on poker.

I'm really open to learn to GTO. I watch a TON of videos. However, I'm Belgian. And I don't play on Stars or Partypoker network (We can only play on Unibet, bwin & Stars) so I'm only playing on Unibet because we also have ZERO bonuses and rakeback. I don't have a Database to dive in. How do I cope with that?

Hey Alvin, if I was able to produce real stats using a poker app, would you consider becoming a coach? I’m about to try and go pro. Been grinding 2/5 and I’m clearly one of the best in my area (Maryland). If I add the math portion to my game, I can go high stakes in little time. Truly… Lmk if you are open, thanks.

30:34 You know you just admitted that you are cheating right? I presume you are not talking about some generic open-raise charts that you can google in less then a minute. Having charts that tell you to 4bet AQo utg vs btn x percent of the time is definitely against TOS.
