WHERE Rome is not safe?
The first place that comes to mind is the area surrounding Termini, which is a huge train station in the middle of Rome.
Probably most Romans will tell you that Termini is not “that bad” anymore because their point of comparison will be a few decades ago, when that place looked more like a wasteland.
The second place is Esquilino, especially during the night
Located near the central station of Rome, the same Termini we talked before, Esquilino is a neighborhood that has a rich history. However, it is also known for its elevated crime rates, particularly petty crimes like pickpocketing and scams.
The area can feel particularly unsafe during nighttime, and tourists are often advised to exercise extreme caution.
Another neighborhood that is not among the safest in Rome is San Basilio.
Situated in the northeastern part of Rome, San Basilio is a predominantly residential area. It is not a typical tourist destination and is known for its higher crime rates, including drug-related crimes and vandalism. The area lacks the historical landmarks and attractions that Rome is famous for, making it less appealing for tourists.
Probably if you are just visiting Rome for a few days you will not go there, BUT…
If you find yourself in San Basilio, it is recommended to be cautious and aware of your surroundings, particularly during the evening and night hours.
Another place that you should avoid during the night is around Tor Bella Monaca
Located on the outskirts of Rome, it has a reputation for being involved in drug trafficking and other organized crimes.
The area is considered relatively unsafe for tourists who are unfamiliar with the locale.
Actually one thing that is curious about Rome is that almost any place that starts with Tor tends to be… not very nice. Like Torpignattara
or Torre Angela for example.
And if you are looking for a place to live or even open a small business, you better avoid Centocelle.
