No Free Speech at College

Are conservative ideas allowed at American colleges?
Protestors routinely try to shut down speeches by conservatives, like Heather Mac Donald, a Contributing Editor of the Manhattan Institute’s City Journal. She also wrote the book “The War on Cops,” which argues that Americans are less safe because police, for fear of being called racist, back off.

When she arrived at Claremont McKenna College for a speech, she was greeted by posters saying “shut down Anti-Black Fascist Heather Mac Donald.”
Mac Donald tells John Stossel that to call her anti-black “is ridiculous. I have spent enormous amount of time in high crime, minority neighborhoods talking to the good people there who are desperate for more police, who have a right to expect the same freedom from fear as people in safer neighborhoods take for granted. My agenda is to try to give voice to these people.”
Yet activists on campus didn’t want to let her speak. They formed a blockade in front of the lecture hall and prevented people from getting in.
Mac Donald eventually spoke to an empty room. The college broadcast it on the internet, but no students could ask questions.
Why has free speech come under attack at so many campuses?
Because, Mac Donald tells Stossel, “College once promoted an understanding of Western culture. Today, there is an enormous bureaucratic infrastructure dedicated to teaching students that they're victims.”
She calls that the “diversity bureaucracy.” The Berkeley Division of Equity and Diversity Inclusion has a $20 million dollar budget. UCLA has a Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, who makes $445,000 a year.
Mac Donald’s response to the protesters: “develop some sense of perspective. You have, at your fingertips every book that has ever been written. You're surrounded by a beautiful campus. These students who are among the most privileged human beings in human, actually think of themselves as victims. And that, to me, is a very sad state of delusion.”

Heather Mac Donald is BASED. Fantastic, really well-researched writer, too. Not a pundit trying to create shock value. Her prose is rigorous, meticulously sourced, scholarly and perspicacious. When the most measured, most reasonable voices on the right are protested and called fascists, then the protestors have jeopardized any remaining credibility. You're not going to find anyone on the right that will be more credible or decorous than Heather. If you can't treat her with respect, then you have intention to engage in good faith.

Totally agree. This generation never had to deal with losing because everyone was deemed a winner (participation trophies, etc.). They were never told no. Bad grade? The teacher just doesn’t understand how to teach you. Discipline problem? The school failed to teach you right from wrong. They were raised under the premise that mommy and daddy are their friends - not parents. These whiny privileged brats wouldn’t know adversity if it came and committed a micro-aggression against them. People need to wake up and stand up for free speech.

They think they know more than the lawn guy, more than the trash truck guy, and expect to be recognized for it. When the day comes they get shut down, they throw a fit like a child. Can't expect much from them at this age because they still want to be a child. They know no discipline yet. Proverbs 13:24. I blame their parents. US is a great country but lacks free high education and good healthcare, which in Europe are available by taxing the VERY rich.

They need to get control over the students. They're there to learn not to act like spoiled 3 year old children that didn't get the candy they wanted at the grocery store. It's like letting the inmates run the prison.

Jerry Metz That's because most of the professors that are teaching them have no applicable knowledge outside of what they learned in college. These people went out into the workforce, did a terrible job, and instead blame themselves and think "what could i do to improve myself." They instead blame it on society and capitalism, get a job as a professor because no one else will hire them, teach their students the book (which they could read themselves), and make a test out of questions from Quizlet. Students all across the country are falling for these loser's scam to pay them 100s of thousands of dollars in tuition when they themselves are not teaching the student how to think, read, and write. Those 3 is what the professor should offer, if the professor can not provide those 3 essential items, fire their asses. I'll never forget this one class I took in college. It was a community college and I walked into a guy's class that was teaching quality management (or team concepts). He looked at me and said "What are you doing?" "Oh am I in the wrong class?" "You're in (class name) correct?" "Yes" "Did you read the email I sent out?" "No, I didn't get to." "You should read your email. You don't need that book." He walked back to his desk and got a book from his desk and placed it on the table in front of me. It was a book he made himself, that compiled more information into 100 pages than what the other book did in 500 pages. This guy had experience working for fortune 500 companies, had 4 degrees, owned and ran 2 fabrication shops at one time, and was the VP of a large university at one point in time. He had experience in what he was teaching, not just knowledge. The class only costed $500 and that has got to be the best $500 I've ever spent. He provided the 3 essential items that every professor should provide, and he did a damn good job.

Any college that allows suppression of speech should lose government funding or shut down. Protesting is one thing, but creating a physical barrier to stop others goes beyond what is appropriate. Truth is, these mindless idiots have nothing of substance to debate so they stop others, use buzz words, and threaten others. I wish I was there, I'd like to see them try and stop me from entering.

Point of college is not knowledge but money. People don't go to college to get wiser but to get jobs with higher pay. College is just trying to make money out of that and since leftist ideology is more popular within the youth that attend the college therefore college is more leftist.

When did we start thinking that the misinformed opinions of children - and that's what these college students are, they're inexperienced children - mattered? This is nothing more than entitled children acting out their power fantasy now that they're in college, like being in college means anything. Have your opinions, but be open to having them challenged. Be open to debate. It might be the only time in college that you fucking learn something.
