NO COVER - Longbow Turkey Hunting

Спорт

Bow Hunting for turkeys in the snow with my Acadian Woods longbow. Trying to shoot an Eastern Turkey with a traditional bow and no blind on public is one of the harder things I've tried. By far, getting to full draw is the biggest challenge, especially when the open woods don't offer much for natural cover.

Can't beat a man at his own game. Turkeys are the #1 quarry. Besides Bigfoot. Your ghillie is almost identical to mine. Mixing colors is the secret most people never figure out. A trick of mine is to always add fresh foliage to the back and front and head. I also spray a little apple cider, and step in horse or cow manure. I've had critters walk right up to me. Horse or cow patties are free and a bucket with a lid stores it. Watched a lot of your videos never subbed though. I'm a hillbilly from Va. I was raised and mentored by a Cree Injun. I miss him every day. You'd be amazed at all the cheats he taught me about hunting and trapping and fishing. He would never starve lol. Subbed liked and notified. Peace.

I had a similar situation last spring: gently bumped a lone tom on my way into the area I intended to hunt. Setup the decoy, did some calling thinking he'd come back in. Instead I called in an entire flock of ~20 birds from across the field. With my bow in my hand and no blind, but good back-cover and a quality decoy out front I froze and waited. The jakes and hens came in but the boss tom wouldn't come into bow range. The worst part was that while I was paying attention to the flock and remaining absolutely motionless, the lone tom snuck back in from behind me and was in range for quite awhile. By the time I noticed him he was rejoining the flock and they were all drifting away. It's challenging but it can be done.

oh for sure@@DIYSportsman ! I had an interesting encounter during deer season this last fall too. I was on the ground with deadfall as back-cover and I had a deer decoy mounted to the front of my bow. A flock of turkeys came through at 5 yards and several toms gave me opportunities, curious about the deer laying under their roost.

I'm sure you know this , however I've got to say it. Turkeys are not color blind. Even in the snow your camo was great. Arrow wrap and fletchings were not. Minimum get cloth camo fletching cover. Then only arrow on the string is exposed. Usually they will be looking"down" this arrow. I'm Not trying to be a keyboard warrior only want to help you get one this year. Great share , awesome , without a blind is super hard. Good luck, thanks for taking us along......

100% agree. I already had the arrows tuned and didn't want to make a dedicated arrow, but should have at the very least put a cover over the arrows in the quiver. I had a doe spook last fall as I was slowly moving my bow as well with those arrows. I can't prove it was that bright cresting, but it's bright, which makes any movement easier to pick up on. My arrows now don't have those bright crestings or fletching, and I moved to using lighted nocks to see the arrow flight.
