Reasons are simple : many countries have their own Crimea; France have New Caledonia, Spain have Catalonia, China have Taïwan etc. so by principle they can't let a country organize referendums in another country. Spain is a NATO member and they don't recognize Kosovo wich was created by referendum under NATO supervision. Useless to say they won't recognize referendums made by Russia in Ukraine. It's logic, they just don't want to set a precedent.

It's surprising any of them are not scared to tell the truth. I personally know people who have been arrested, who were fined and even went to prison... My friend's friend (a female) was tortured at the police station - they have an audio recording of her screaming while she was being electrocuted and beaten (she had been arrested at a peaceful protest). Most of my friends have left Russia and some are still afraid to share any negative information publicly on social media. It's so sad :(

This is so sad. I remember when I was a child and the Soviet Union was still around this is how Russians acted, afraid to speak truthfully what they felt or thought because of fear of the state. Then I witnessed the fall of the Soviet Union and Russians were out on the streets, celebrating with everyone else around the world, and no longer afraid to say whatever they wanted. And now we see a return to that old dark time again. History is rhyming.

The first referendum on the territory of Crimea (the first referendum in the history of the USSR) took place on January 20, 1991. The decision to hold it was made on November 12, 1990 at an extraordinary session of the Crimean Regional Council of People's Deputies. The question was put to the vote: "Are you for the re-establishment of the Crimean Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic as a subject of the USSR and a member of the Union Treaty?" 1.777.841 million Crimeans had the right to vote. The referendum was attended by 1.441 million people (81.3%), including residents of Sevastopol. 1.343.855 million people (93.26%) answered positively. The majority of Crimean Tatars boycotted the vote. However, on February 12, the Supreme Council of the Ukrainian SSR adopted a law on the restoration of the Crimean ASSR as part of the Ukrainian SSR. Four months later, the corresponding changes were made to the constitution of the Ukrainian SSR in 1978, and the Crimean region was transformed into the Crimean ASSR.

And that guy towards the end, naming the actions of Hitler, but claiming "but Russia doesn't go this way". I'm really trying to anticipate how Russia can come back from that, from such delusions and brainwashing. It took Germany decades (and even that process is never finished), but it seems something terrible and brutal has to happen first... I'm thinking maybe you could have engaged that last guy more with your arguments: So why do so few countries support Russia's annexation (even clear allies)? How can he be so sure European countries twist historical facts and not Russia? What if Germany held referendums in Königsberg/Karliningrad after bombing it to rubble? But then again, that guy probably would have twisted the logic of the questions anyway, and he had a subtly agreessive vibe, so it's probably better you didn't push too hard. Iran is a mess and deserves to be sanctioned and punished for war crimes even more than before, because they gave Russians drones to attack civilian cities. So don’t be talking any of this nonsense about how good Iran is. Iran is a horrible fascist dictatorship that supports Russian genocide. Iran is one of the worst countries ever.

There are plenty of old commies in Russia. Plenty. They profited well off the misery of others in the Soviet Union. You can hear similar in intercepted calls from Russian soldiers calling home with bloodthirsty women urging looting of washing machines and other goods. No, it isn’t sophisticated but outside Moscow, the mentality is more prevalent than people might think.
