Legally, the driver was not allowed to take over. In Germany, you need at least 1.5m when taking over a bike (and this is a perfect example why this law makes sense). It would have been smarter from the father to drive on the road, left from his kid (which, btw, *must* use the pedestrian path).

@@dunkelselbst Unfortunately, the 1.5 meters rule does apply only when the bicyclist uses the same lane as the cars. It does not apply in a constellation as seen in the video, with the bicyclist using a separate path.

The sign shows that no pedestrians are allowed through here because the pavement is too narrow and therefore too dangerous, as oncoming pedestrians cannot move out of the way without stepping onto the carriageway. This means that cyclists up to the age of 8 are not allowed to use the pavement either, as is the rule for small children on bikes. Older cyclists must ride on the road, but this would also have been forbidden for the little boy cyclist because he is too young. *It was not possible for this constellation to pass through the tunnel! I think there are other valuable observations to make. The infrastructure in this place is cars first, pedestrians an afterthought, and what is a bicycle? If you are going to cycle here, take the road and occupy a full lane. It is certainly not optimal with a small slow child, but there is still a second lane for cars to overtake, and there would be room for a fall. But of course the ideal solution would be to find a better place to train a child that is clearly not that stable yet.

You can't really see it because of camera perspective, but the walkway on the other side is like 5 times wider... Proper walkway where even 2 bicycles can pass next to each other. That's why that specific side he took is blocked off. I pass there daily because of work. No way I would force what seems like a 5 year old child to cycle either there or on the road with heavy traffic. Just go to the other side, push the bike for like 100 meters and they could've continued cycling. Jesus this man...

As someone who spent 4 years riding a bicycle, but now drives a car, I would say the blame is about 50/50. I always give kids on bikes a wide berth. but they should have been riding on the street as that sidewalk is much too narrow. The correct way to ride would be side by side with the adult on the outside. Make the cars go around them. It is also important to slow the F down when you see children. I recently had one dart out in front of me when walking home from school. Luckily I was going slow enough to avoid them.

Better to ride on bike trails or in the park than on the streets... Pick the least busy streets if you need... I could tell something was going to happen long before it did... Parents have to think twice as hard as to what could happen, to prevent things before they do happen... And always... always pray over your babies every day... every day... Amen.

Passing any bicyclist within 6 feet is against the law in many American states. A bee could sting bicyclist, or a dog bite, and over your way will come bicyclist, right under your wheels. I try to ride as far away from motorized traffic as possible, but there are places along the way where we do have to share the road.

As a father i could never understand this, i would NEVER let my little ones drive their bikes in such busy roads with ongoing cars... this is just one accident away from disaster as this video proves, this time it went well but next time it wont... something similar happened infront of me, a guy was just like this dude, driving his bike with his smaller child while his other daughter was on her own bike, 6 years old apr, and as a car came from a crossing the girl fell and the car almost hit her, scary...

Well, done to that driver his evasive action almost certainly saved the child's life. But the adult must take some blame for the incident for allowing Such a young volatile child to ride a push bike in such a dangerous environment.

*The father is irresponsible and has hopefully learnt his lesson* He didn't even look startled! Sometimes traffic rules make sense, as in this case.*

Complicated to incriminate the father on this occasion, passing the red light allowed him to get ahead of the car, these few seconds saved the little child. I would rather blame the institutions which do not do their utmost to secure the roadways. In France it's even worse and what's more we don't respect the highway code 😬

Everyone is commending the Audi driver, however his driving wasn't so hot, accelerating hard and overtaking aggressively, had he been driving reasonably he wouldn't have needed such an emergency reaction, the dashcam footage would be incriminating for them and their driving, the truck was the front vehicle in that lane, that said i did like that so many stopped to check they were OK, it was negligent and wreckless of the father, and he has to take wrap for endangering his kids...

On the one hand driver had a good reaction. On the other hand, he didn't respect the safety distance to overpass a cyclist (at least 1 meter in cities in most of the countries, and 1,5m outside cities). By taking the right lane, he did a mistake. If he had stayed on thev left lane like others cars. it was more safe. So good reaction but low anticipation.
