No.85 giving her best performance
A visit to Keighley and worth valley railway and Oxenhope station where No.85 was in charge of today’s passenger services, she performed well and gave some beautiful sounds.

No.85 can still perform well despite her 124 years. They were made to last in 1899, thankfully this one survived and is still working well. Thanks for another great video.🙂👍

Working well too
Many years ago I worked for a copper mine that had a long spur line to the main track. Besides their diesel electrics, they had a couple of old steamers down in the rail yard and they would be fired up once a month and run the length of the spur to keep them in working order. This was usually done on a Sunday and Sunday was a slow day for us on the maintenance crew so you can guess what some of us were doing on that particular Sunday instead of working.

That’s fantastic, I bet you absolutely loved using them on a Sunday 👍
A lovely video of No 85 at Oxenhope. Brilliant lighting effects, and rich autumnal colours. Many thanks for posting KT.

I love that second issuance of vapour at the 4m0s mark. The "new" encroaching on the "old"

I'm afraid that I don't see any change in the steam "issuance," as you call it, at the 4 minute 0 second point in time. And I don't understand what at all you mean by "the old encroaching on the new." There is only one engine shown in the video as far as I can tell. Can you please elaborate on your comments? Thank you.

@@bill091086 I think the comment is referring to blow off valve steam crossing over with exhaust.
Impressive performance indeed.
I am going into a railway station before 100 years back. It is a new experience to me ❤️ Excellent view for steam train Yard 👍

Funny, went from being just another 0-6-2 built by the TVR but soon became an icon of south welsh steam powering on in England and wales
Nice to see it had both a good fireman and good coal. running nice and clean with the SV's just blowing a very little.

I thought I was the only critic of the fireman's craft. Nothing makes me more comfortable than white smoke.
A truly delightful video. Rally evocative

Why weren’t steam engines designed to run this way? Locomotives like class 20 designed to run cab first for visibility, steam engines designed with a huge front and limited visibility.
@KevsTrains
8 ай бұрын
Class 20’s were designed to run both ways, blunt end and engine first, steam engines where designed with controls attached to the busy part (firebox and boiler) so that’s why they ran that way, also down to aerodynamic when boilers were fitted with streamlined panels.

Tank loco's like this weren't usually turned, so needed to work both smokebox first *and* cab first. Tender locos needed the cab/firebox next to the coal in the tender.

There were many cab-forward steam locomotives in the USA.

@@physiocrat7143 I was generalising - there were exceptions but they make up a minuscule fraction of all steam locos built
Why do steam locomotives leak ?
@KevsTrains

What do you mean by leak?
@gwaithwyr
7 ай бұрын
By "leak" youmay mean the ejection of cooling steam from the cylinder drain cocks before the engine moves. This prevents hydraulic lock and damage.

It’s perfectly normal for a steam engine to leak steam as it’s used and parts bed in then wear, I blame entropy
