No. 18 Ohio State vs No. 2 Iowa | Big Ten | 1.21.24

Спорт

COLUMBUS, OH - linktr.ee/womensbasketballall...
Written by Declan Walsh | NCAA.com
Stepping onto the floor to begin the fourth quarter, No. 3 Iowa's Caitlin Clark set out to squash Ohio State's spirited upset bid, nailing a three before dropping a dime to Molly Davis. Iowa's lead grew to 70-58 and it appeared the Buckeyes, like nearly everyone who squares up against Iowa, couldn't keep up with their high powered attack.
But No. 18 Ohio State's handsy defensive identity - the Buckeyes force nearly 21 turnovers a game - resurfaced in crunch time, as three crucial takeaways powered Ohio State to a 25-13 run to end regulation, and the Buckeyes ultimately cruised in overtime to a massive 100-92 win over Iowa.
Despite the loss, Iowa star Caitlin Clark finished with one of her best career performances with 45 points, just one off matching an all-time high, and seven rebounds. A pair of first-quarter triples from Clark helped the Hawkeyes build an early four-point cushion. But it was Cotie McMahon who owned the first quarter, totaling 11 points, including the afternoon's very first basket, and helping the Buckeyes stay within just two against the sharp-shooting visitors.
The Buckeyes managed retake their lead on moments into the second period on a Taylor Thierry triple, and after a brief Iowa run ahead of the intermission, OSU's Jacy Sheldon continued an excellent afternoon with another crucial triple before the halftime horn to pull the Buckeyes back within a possession - Sheldon had a splendid 24 points and seven boards.
A pair of unlikely contributors stepped up for Iowa to build much-needed separation from a relentless Buckeye team as Addison O'Grady and Sydney Affolter - the two entered Saturday with just over 10 points per game combined - were the only scorers in a quarter-ending 12-6 run, with the Hawkeyes leading 65-58. Clark's aforementioned magic to begin the fourth quarter dug a near impossible hole for the Buckeyes - trailing by 12, ESPN Analytics gave OSU just a 3.5 percent chance of victory - but McMahon regathered the reins on a dominant 33-point, 12-rebound performance, converting a gritty and-one to spark Ohio State's late rally and scoring 13 points in the final quarter of regulation.
McMahon's layup and a jumper from Celeste Taylor inside the final minute brought Ohio State all the way back, leading 82-81, but it all appeared for naught as Hannah Stuelke was fouled with nine seconds remaining and a chance to win the game. The Iowa forward split the pair, however, and the heavyweight showdown barreled on toward overtime. A hot shooting night for the Buckeyes - OSU shot a scintillating 11-22 on the afternoon from three - peaked in overtime, as the home squad made 83 percent of their field goals in the extra period and dominated OT by a margin of 17-9.

I personally think because due to that national championship which made Caitlin and Angel even more famous……and the fact that Iowa is predominantly white, while LSU is predominantly black and minority…..people will practically fight to the death to explain why Iowa did so good even if they had an obvious bad game. Every team has bad games no matter how good they are, and how good and popular their individual players are. It seems like when there’s a white team versus a black team……almost everyone will defend the white team, and try to shade the black team because deep down inside nobody wants the black team to win.

I saw a lot of comments saying that the girl needs to apologize to Caitlin for them running into each other. Now if we actually watch that video…..Caitlin saw the girl running, she was definitely paying attention and she clearly had enough time and space to move out the way a bit. As for the girl, she definitely should’ve been paying attention because she was on her phone, however…..it was an accident, and so many Ohio fans came out onto the court not just her. Now I am a fan of Caitlin, I love and respect her game however…..she was being a bit dramatic during that moment, I mean even if it did hurt…how is it that the girl who she ran into was able to get back up easily like as if she tripped a bit, and Caitlin was laying on the floor acting like she got shot or hit by a car? It also didn’t seem like they ran into each other that hard. While I love Caitlin…..I gotta say, that moment for her was very dramatic.

Im so happy that I am not the only person to say that. CC was not hurt at all, you can see she was flopping. All these people around the country bragging about Clark has created someone who now thinks they are so better than everyone else, and entitled to some special treatment. CC was out there crying before the game ended like a spoiled brat. I was there at the game, she was so upset that she was losing. These people go crazy over CC, just pay attention to the incident, you can see an Ohio State staff member while running to Clark take and push an Ohio State player standing there about to help Clark, nearly throwing the player away from Clark. Now Iowa loses, watch they drop to # 3 or 4 in the ranking instead of 7-10 like they do other top teams that have loss.

but that's the COACH, and also the NCAA. The NCAA got their girl, she's the biggest name in women's sports. The coach can't deny the revenue that has been generated from her name, they're being covered nationally, even globally, the town is booming, there is nothing the coach can do, or will do, to stop that money train. If she were to pass more, and not take as many shots, her point production goes down, the highlights go down, and she won't be as exciting to watch to the fans. So shoot away Clark, all the way to losing once again in the tournament. HAHAAA And even though my Wolverines will probably get obliterated by Iowa soon, we beat our rivals in OSU who just beat Iowa so we kinda beat them at the moment too!! Michigan isn't going anywhere this year, so I hope all the rankings get screwed up YEAH!!! #GOBLUE

There is no "I" in the word team. Basketball is a team sport not a Clark sport. That's why IOWA has never won a National Title and it's sad that those players who fed Clark the ball for 4 years get very little credit for it. UCONN is totally different. In one recent game (that they won) 5 players scored in the mid teens. FIVE PLAYERS!!!!!!! That's why UCONN is so successful. There is no "I" in the word team. Clark is a PG, but in this current Iowa system I don´t think it will work if they wanna be Final Four contenders again. As much as I love CC passing skills, I admit maybe It´s better for Iowa if Molly runs the point and she stays at the 2, heliocentric offense will not work this year. She needs to be used as a decoy and Molly passes the ball inside to either Hannah or Martin when 2 defenders try to trap CC thinking she´s gonna get the ball. The two losses were 70% CC´s fault for her decision making and shot selection, so next time try using Molly Davis, she has an awesome layup bag to open up the floor for the rest

OSU played their best game of the season, but Iowa beat themselves. They controlled most of the game but lost it near the end. There were a lot of missed foul calls in the paint and several touch fouls that should have not been called. Bad officiating throws off the tempo of the game itself. They need to do better. The matchup in IC will be another good one that will be a must watch. Could determine who wins the B1G.

Michigan fan here, although I hate OSU with a passion, I'm so happy they beat Iowa. Here me out. For one, it just keeps ruining the rigged rankings. That causes all types of problems for the crooked AP specifically, because they don't rank according to actual WORTH. Second, it exposes the truth about Iowa, they chunk up a bunch of 3s, and hope to intimidate their opponents with Clark's wacky range. but if you just keep playing team basketball, they'll usually fold in crunch time. That Iowa player who shot that 3 at 96-90, yeah her legs actually buckled due to the PRESSURE of taking that shot. And hey, that one loss on OSU conference record, yeah that's us baby. The fan who ran into Caitlyn I'm sure didn't mean to. If Caitlyn has police around her where were they. What I don't understand is the commit Iowa's coach made when she said, that it was just wrong, like it was done on purpose. The other players didn't seem to have a problem. Maybe somebody needs to open their eyes and see what's around them.

CC doesn't have the kind of players around her that you would want to take over the game in the last quarter to put the opponent's defense to work. Or maybe the coach hasnt done enough to develop the other players to take the lead on the floor. They need to have a bench that can keep opponents worried especially when CC is not on the floor. Having one player option is bad for any team. She can score 40+ points a game but if the bench players on the team are not making mid range shots or driving to the basket then she will have a tough final if the hawkeyes get there. If they had a point guard who's able to protect the ball, draw defenders and create options for the rest of the team, perhaps things would have turned out differently in terms of the pressure to defend, Buckeyes would have had to deal with. Also Stuelke should have done a bit of strength training to avoid being bullied under the basket. She can work on her footwork to deal with much stronger centers when she is attacking the rim much like what Utah's Alisa does. This was a painful loss though. But credit to Ohio for the win.
