Mississippi State vs No. 9 LSU | SEC | 1.29.24

STARKVILLE - linktr.ee/womensbasketballall...
Written by Elizabeth Keen | HailState.com
Mississippi State rose to the occasion on Monday night. The Bulldogs showed out on both ends of the floor on the way to a 77-73 victory over defending national champion and No. 9-ranked LSU.
A crowd of 9,121 members of the Maroon and White faithful filled Humphrey Coliseum to witness history, marking the first home sellout of the Sam Purcell era.
"I look up at the Hump and there's a line sitting ready, and I was just speechless," Purcell said, describing his arrival to the coliseum this afternoon. "I was like, 'This is what I dreamed about.'"
MSU then went out and rewarded its loyal fans.
The Bulldogs started off strong with a 14-2 run midway through the first quarter and shot 47 percent from the field to lead by as many as eight points in the frame.
Guard Jerkaila Jordan spearheaded the effort, recording nine points and three rebounds through the opening 10 minutes. Starting forward Erynn Barnum and senior Darrione Rogers also put up key shots for the home team.
Freshman Mjracle Sheppard made the second quarter her own. The native of Kent, Washington, added six points and kept offensive possessions alive with a pair of offensive rebounds.
The game remained close as the Dawgs headed to the half trailing 40-35.
State then came out of the locker room and put together an outstanding third quarter in which it shot an impressive 84.6-percent from the floor and 66.7-percent from three-point range to take control of the contest. Jordan scored the team's first five points of the second half, netting 12 points in the first five minutes of the third quarter. Rogers backed the senior up with five points in the stanza.
Seven different players found the basket, and the Dawgs netted six of their last seven field goals to close out the third quarter. They outscored the Tigers by 11 points over 10 minutes and took a six-point lead into the final stanza of action.
The Hump was buzzing, sensing a win. Then, State sealed the deal.
MSU held strong on defense as the fourth quarter got underway, and Rogers stepped up big in the final minutes of the game to hit crucial shots when necessary. She scored nine of her team's 14 points in the last quarter, starting with a big shot from beyond the arc as the Tigers attempted to mount a comeback. Rogers added three free throws over two trips to the line in the final minute of action to secure the victory for the Bulldogs.
"I have so many people who believe in me, but I believe in these young women, and they believe in each other" Purcell said.
Jordan finished the game with a team-high 24 points and five rebounds, while Rogers scored 19 total points. Sheppard did a bit of everything with 12 points, four offensive rebounds, five assists and six steals.
The victory gives the Dawgs two straight wins, a 17-5 overall record, a 4-3 mark in Southeastern Conference play and a ton of momentum headed into their next game.
Up next, Mississippi State will travel to Lexington to face Kentucky. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. CT on Thursday, February 1. The game will be streamed by SEC Network+.

LSU is only 7 deep..as most schools in the NCAAWB...S.Carolina has changed the game with it's approach of going 10 deep and allowing all of the players to play meaningful minutes at different parts of every game. UConn would simply overstack the bench and red shirt their All-Americans.

LSU did not play Mississippi State the way they played against South Carolina. Why are teams so hell-bent on performing their best against South Carolina but fail to do so against other teams? Everyone brings their A-game when facing South Carolina. The animosity towards South Carolina is real!

Let’s not make this about South Carolina. This is about all the hype we had to see starting after the National Championship game. Don’t get me wrong, LSU deserved their spotlight and their moments in glory. Then they went to the transfer portal and got HVL to replace Alexis Morris at the point guard position and that’s a complete flop. Then they went and got Aneesa Morrow and THAT is supposed to be the formula to cakewalk everyone in the world. We had to endure that coach Reddus, or whatever his name is, taunting through twitter all summer along with Reese about their “SUPER TEAM”. They get on the floor with their shenanigans and waist a lot of precious energy celebrating 2 points, and since the coach has a bench that she’s not using, THOSE GIRLS ARE TIRED! They are not the super team that they thought they were and we knew that from game one. When you have eaten too much pride, you gotta have some humble pie for dessert.

Lmao you clearly never watched last year’s national championship that LSU won. In fact not everyone has any animosity towards South Carolina…..almost anyone who isn’t an LSU fan, hates LSU because they played against Iowa during that national championship and they beat Iowa. That pissed a lot of people off for pretty much 2 reasons: 1: LSU is predominantly black/minority with Iowa being predominantly white, and when you have a black team versus a white team regardless of who they are….almost nobody not even a lot of black people, want the black team to win and 2: the head players for both teams “Angel” and Caitlin” were caught up in some beef last year because Angel “apparently but not actually” made a hand signal at Caitlin which had the sports world, and even fans going crazy and harassing her online (even though Caitlin did the exact same thing to someone else like a few weeks before) and it was hard for Angel because they had just won the championship, and still to this day….people hate on LSU for those 2 reasons and wanna take them down so badly. Some people still try to bring up Caitlin to shade Angel about it.

@@tiamarrow6366I would agree if this was the first championship that a predominantly black and white team competed against each other… but it’s not. It’s not black and white it’s just competition. Real fans vs bandwagon fans. A lot of LSU fans just started watching and cheering last year. LSU just became a great program last year so all the hype they get is disrespectful to programs that’s been consistent for years upon years before that ONE lucky championship. And yes lucky because their march bracket was trash due to the lack of strength in their schedule last year.

Wow this was a shocker, they all look tired, if u look at the score card all but one of Ms State starters had less than 10points 😮, Aneesah Morrow is still the most consistent, but the BiG East and the SEC is a different ball game, Reese does what she does but needs to develop a shot, HVL is consistently throwing the ball away & Maklah is hot & cold, great game Flajae, this was a tough one!

MS State Coach stated that he studied the game between LSU / S. Carolina with his team and broke that game down with his players in preparation for this game....now that was excellent on his part as a coach!

State Coach stated that he took his entire team to the film room to watch that game live...broke down the game they had against S. Carolina and studied each frame of LSU vs. S. LSU Women are some of the best hoopers around, but until they address all of their weaknesses and become more versatile, then they will be just a bunch of amazing players who lose. I said it once and I say it again LSU is a slow team. They have problems with teams that are good at fast break points. And for the love of biscuits why is Angel Resse bringing the ball up the court, that should be your point guard, the game should flow through your point guard. Angel Resse needs to model her game like her cousin Shaq and post up under the basket, turn around and lay it up. That slows things down, and wears the defensive players out.

Not a huge college ball watcher, so it may very well be completely normal, but does anyone else think LSU is unnecessarily aggressive on many of their plays? Idk, when they dribble and extend their arm to push off the defensive player, it genuinely looks as though they are purposefully trying to shove the other player to the ground. I watch mostly big ten games, which isn’t quite the same as sec, just seems like nearly every 20 seconds they are slamming into someone. Fast pace, intense, sometimes full on/aggressive, closely matched games are why the sport is growing on the women’s side (in addition to Clark, Reese, Boston, Van Lith popularity), but I don’t find it enjoyable when ego and constant, purposeful fouling dominate the matchup. Still enjoyed the game, and am certainly willing to accept I may not have viewed enough sec basketball to recognize whether or not lsu goes too far overboard with their attitude.

Obviously it’s upsetting that they lost, however…..are we not gonna acknowledge how close the final score was? Let’s take a moment to recognize the fact that with the games they’ve lost…..the scores were very close to where they could’ve actually won, that says something. Like I keep saying, for the people who think LSU is such a trash team and wanna hate on them so badly for whatever reason….if they were such a trash team, how come for the games they’ve lost the final scores have been so close to where they could’ve won? Let’s take their games against Arkansas, and even earlier in the season against McNeese….let’s pretend that LSU was the one that lost, now if those scores had been their final scores for those games or if their final scores had been much lower than that then yes they would be a trash team, hell most of their final scores wouldn’t even make it into the 90’s, let alone past 100. They are obviously tired, and need some time to rest and then to practice way more than ever however…..let’s look at certain key points of the game where they did some good things specifically Flau’jae and Aneessa. A lot of us seem to have a habit of whenever we watch LSU games regardless of if they win or not, we immediately try to point out their flaws and mistakes which overshadow some of the good plays that they did make. No team on earth is perfect, and even the ones that have had a huge winning streak with 0 losses, they’ve made mistakes too….not just LSU. Yes point out their mistakes, but try to also point out whatever good plays were done….maybe I’m one of those people who sees it as “you can point out the negatives and positives at the same time” but it’s not that hard to do.

HLV is not a point guard; in that role she slows down the game and gets too tired, so she arrives at the end of the match in reserve and misses shots that she put in last year. From what I saw in the video it seems to me that she played a decent game

Don't wanna hear bout chemistry mixtures or personal issues don't wanna hear bout grades or any of that crap. This team ISN'T playing up to what they claim they are. The BIG NiL deals are messing up college basketball. Would you practice much in the gym if a school got you a million dollar NIL deal to come there? I would be lazy too and not practice much. As a kid im sure she feels like she is already rich and is guaranteed that money as long as she stays at that school. Getting all of that money takes the motivation away from being great. Look at the NBA for example. A lot of those players are lazy and hardly ever plays any defense during the regular season. Because they are guaranteed all of that money nomatter what.

Sure you could get a few thousand for having a great game and being on a team but WINNING gets you far and that requires teamwork. Individual stats mean nothing if your team is losing. Dawn cares for all her players, regardless of their background. No one should play under Kim; she is not supportive and neglects her players, especially those of color.

Offensively, LSU tried running too many plays and not enough simple ball play…just get the ball in the bucket. All that dribbling and passing the ball around, forced turnovers. The name of the game is get the ball in the hole. Work on your shots, ladies and shoot with confidence. Nail your shots, period.
