Nissan NV200 CVT Oil Change with Aux Filter Change

Most people don't realize that Nissan added an auxiliary pleated oil filter to all their CVT transmissions starting in 2012. This filter isn't in the maintenance guide or the service manual. This video shows how to change the CVT fluide, intake strainer and the pleated oil filter that is located behind the oil cooler/warmer.

    For the ones that look for the correct o ring for the small transmission oil filter, try Mitsubishi part 2920A096 filter o-ring. it is exactly the same. The Nissan seller in Canada doesn't know nothing about this o-ring.

    There is no need at all to use anti seize on the pan bolts. They only torque to 8 ft lbs and they go in and out easily. Just leave them as it. Everything else good, drop the pan every other change and clean it out. You can use other CVT fluids that are NS3 compatible, like Castrol, are not married to Nissan fluid (shich they don't make).

    Go to the dealer and look at the oil cooler diagram. When I made this video there was no part number for the o-ring. But, the strainer did have one. The o-ring may be part of the oil cooler. This filter only needs to be changed once every 150,000 miles. It is a real pain, but not impossible. Nissan probably never wants it changed.

    I have a NV200, making noise near the transmission final gear box leading to the two CV shafts. It only makes pop noise when we are moving from stop and coming to a stop. And the CV are good. Do we use some thicker oil in that final gear assembly? there are a big play like 1-2 degree when we jack up the front, and turn one wheel backward and forward, and the play gives some soft contact noise, not sure that is usual.

  • @NathansHVAC

    @NathansHVAC

    The gears are lubed by the cv fluid. That fluid has to be factory for proper friction on the belt. It sounds like a suspension issue. Check the ball joints, tie rods and steering rack. See what part has the loose play. Check those parts on the ground feeling them while someone else shakes the wheels and steering wheel. Popping from the strut springs plastic bearing is normal when turning the wheel at the start of the day. But what you are describing is not normal.

    Use Nissan NS3 or equivalent. Amsoil makes it now. CVT are sensitive to the correct oil because the belt needs traction. There are some special additives in NS3 oil.

    I did this service on my 2011 Nissan Rogue S FWD few days ago (easy job but took me over 3 hours). Replaced both filters (strainer and in line cartridge). It took 5.6-5.7 quarts of NS2 fluid. Gasket (18 +2 alignment holes)+strainer (.600 pick up tube) is AutoZone P/N TF495 (not TF705). At 70,000 miles cartridge looked ok so did a strainer. Magnets were also clean (very minimal amount of that muddy stuff). Probably could've continued with just 1 drain/fill every 20,000-30,0000 miles and do this service at 120,000 or even later. THANKS FOR A GREAT VIDEO!

    CVT fluid and filter should be done every 30K to 40K max miles. They are very sensative to maintenance. You eneded up replacing yours. Probably because it was wore out from extended service intervals. Use only the fluid from the manufacturer as well. I see in your video you did do that. All that anti seize is not necessary on those bolts. Its odd that they appeared tapered. But you said 2 were stripped out. You have to check torque specs.

    I ended up changing my transmission at 175,000 miles. I did a video on that. I put an inline filter ahead of this one. I think changing the fluid and main screen at 40,000 miles is better. But, to answer your question. If the screen is clean, this filter is probably clean too. 150,000 miles would probably be fine. You can reach that filter easier from the driver side mud flap. I noticed that when I changed the transmission.
