Nissan GT-R Nismo - a fast goodbye to an icon | evo LEADERBOARD

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Nissan's magnificent R35 GT-R is no longer on sale in the UK, and will shortly be put out of production altogether. Over its 15-year lifespan, the R35 has only gotten better, culminating in the brilliant £180k GT-R Nismo. Steve Sutcliffe gets behind the wheel to say goodbye to the Japanese icon in the best way we know how - by seeing how fast it'll go around Angelsey circuit.
Read our review of the last Nismo GT-R at the link below, and don't forget to buy your copy of evo from www.evo-shop.co.uk (because that's what pays the bills to make these films).

Its probably down to the fact that the R35 has been in development/testing/production for so long, the engineers have ironed out most of the cars original quirks and flaws. especially with the final Nismo. That's something the papers don't show.

Like every GTR before it, the R35 undoubtedly shook the competition. I remember when the R35 was shamed for being a computer on wheels and heavy, meanwhile its relatively analogue nowadays and weighs less than the 2023 BMW M240i.... I was so pleased when the GTR finally arrived. It walked straight up to the 911 turbo which cost twice as much, poked it in the eye, kicked it in the nuts, and shoved it into the verge. Here was a 4 seat GT that could trade lap times with the very very best for achievable money.

It's got all the bolt-ons, upgraded turbos, flex fuel, the works. Should be around 800 wheel horsepower. It's pretty nuts and I love every second of it!!

I still remember the day it came out around 2007, even if it was not until 2009 it started selling in EU. I was 16. My dad was driving a A6 C5 with the 3 liter turbo styled under De Silva; my mom had a MKV Golf GTI first time with a dual clutch gearbox, relative just purchased an M3 E92 V8 manual! and a friend had a 335i with the infamous N54 engine when BMW stil hadn’t figure out twin-turbo. What a great time! All of the sudden this 490HP, double clutch, 4WD, 4 seats monster came out. It bootstrapped the horse power war, and all the electronic gadgets (active suspension, lunch control, chop your head off mode etc). But I also remember that period with some dreariness. 2008 was the year of the financial crisis which coincided with the last year of Berlusconi government here in Italy. Italy was in big trouble and needed cash. So the following government decided to heavily tax any car with more then 245bhp. So in a few months, the A6 became a diesel, the M3 was sold and the same for 335i. And also gone my dream to ever own a GT-R. Lucky the GTI stayed.

So the standard version is still okay price-wise especially accouting for inflation since 2008 it came out and the performance per money. But the Nismo version was even initially crazy pricey, about 3x the price of the standard car, which I never understood (it's even not a limited prosuction car). For comparison, a new Speciale was not 3x price of a 458.

How long this GT-R generation has been produced? If I'm not mistaken Since 2007, so it's about 14 years. I guess at first, Nissan only sold them until 2012 or at least 2014. But they went beyond decade. I was expected new "R36 GT-R" around 2018-2019. But I was wrong. Nissan kept GT-R in production although its over a decade old & started to show its age without major facelift. In a point where buying a new GT-R seems ridiculous because you could get the used one in just less than a half price from the New one & virtually same car. It's time to stop R35 GT-R, Nissan. Its a good thing to give way to next generation "R36 GT-R".

It's already been withdrawn from Europe/UK on noise and/or emissions grounds and I don't see how they can evolve it into an R36 without overhauling the package to add electrification at this point... so it probably is finally finished in this format now and I doubt that Nissan is in a strong enough position post-Ghosn to do a proper replacement _at all_ for the time being.

i cant believe that this has the same weight as a new gen bmw m2 (!!!!!) now. what a joke. everyone is talking about co2 and one of the most productive things would be to build lighter cars and now we live in a world of freakin wales. its like porsche and a few other exocitc car fanufactures are the last ones building cars below 1500 kg.

It’s a heavy Datsun that’s outdated. Just because it has a NiSMO badge on it doesn’t make it worth all that extra money. Quick machine but so outdated!

As good as it's, the ride is harsh for city commuting. Gearbox isn't as smart as Porsche PDK for commuting in traffic. And that rusty wheel hub that Nissan never care to solve.

I never cared for the R35 GTR. The new Supra gets a lot of crap for not being a Toyota but at least they stuck with the same recipe as the original Supra. That's totally not the case with the 'new' GTR; it went from I-6 to V6, and from manual to DCT with all the complexity and weight added to the drivetrain, plus removing rear-wheel-steering it just doesn't deliver the same experience as the GTR legends of the past, but, ironically, the new Supra pretty much reflects the original one by design, only better.. so much for not being a true Toyota. On the other hand, Nissan seemed to have built the R35 more for bragging rights than for following its lineage. Instead they picked the 'put-it-on-steroids' approach and it changed character too much. The new Honda/Acura NSX is a better R35 GTR than Nissan's version of it.

@@gixxr88 No doubt it's an excellent sports-car/supercar killer. I haven't driven any of the GTR models in real life but I'd presume the older GT-Rs are more thrilling to drive despite being slower than the R35. Maybe the R35 is just too good in the same way a 911 Turbo S is faster but less thrilling to drive than, say a GT2 RS for example.

The weight of the GTR was not a mistake. It was designed around that weight. Aero needs speed to start working and the weight is downforce at low speeds and will keep the people who have money to buy these safe. That's why I have always loved it. Cause the things it does for its weight is incredible. For it to have a 2.6-2.7 0-60 recorded time with the power and weight it has, its breathtaking...
