Allan Bairstow I tested this on the way home in the Leaf. I had never tested really D + Eco. It does make a difference but its tiny.....whereas in the Van as you see in the video - its a massive difference, it basically over doubles the regen of D (And then B is even more again). I can only think this adjustment is due to the extra weight they expect you to be carrying. So modes I get are: D, D+ Eco and B (B + Eco does nothing extra for me anyhow in terms of added regen).

A bit late now but this applies both to the van and the leaf. Once you start the car you can still drive off without the key, so be careful leaving the car switched on & unattended. I found out when me & the mrs swapped seats. I drove & had the key in my pocket. I jumped out at home and she drove to the school to pick the kids up but I still had the keys. She turned off the car whilst at school. The kids got in, she tried to start the car but it would not start as she didn't have the keys. I had to borrow her car, drive to the school and give her the key so she card start the car. So it will stay on and drivable until you turn the car off with or without the key.

HI Ian, great review. I'm looking forward to test driving the Combi too as soon as I can locate one near to me. A quickie about driving modes, I was always under the impression that there are 4 modes ? D, D+ECO, B, B+ECO. I have all these modes available on my Acenta. Perhaps I am wrong.

John Benton Cheers John, I really hope they do. Its an actual real life review, no nonsense, from an existing LEAF owner (Of which I love)....and to be fair I was a little let down by the lack of progression on this one (seemed actually like a backward step a little). I am sure they are going to shoot forward at some point...just wish it was with the release of this that they did! We would switch in a heart beat to a 100 mile range (real life!) 7 Seater Nissan.... but 65-75 is just to low for a family that does any distance. It would literally have to be plugged in throughout the day to be sure there was enough juice, and with a busy family life of 4 children and all doing after school classes / activities this would just be another headache on top. Come on NissanUK Nissan Europe lets get a nice big battery pack in there :)

+Ian Sampson In all honesty.. if you switched between the classic vw bug, and the vw combi... would you be looking for advances in combi ? Nope.. its a truck. You get a better hand brake. You maybe get better visability in some aspects... worse in others. In that example, you got more cubes at the expense of speed, economy, maneuvering, and ride comfort. Same as here. nature of the beast.

Thanks for the informative review, Ian. Nissan here in Canada sell the van but only in petrol versions. I think only in bare bones construction styles. Chevrolet sell the same van with different badging and call it the City Van. Again, it's hollow inside. The little panel behind the front door you were wondering about is where the fuel filler door would be.

+Ian Sampson Not that I know of. Although there are more and more recharging stations, people are still wary of lack of range. I'm on Vancouver Island, so it's not such a big concern as distances are smaller. A lot of people who move here are retirees from the mainland, and they're used to their big guzzlers, so electric cars are taking off, but not to the same degree as they are over there.

I wonder how it manages tire rotations with respect to accurately displaying the tire positions. On LEAFspy you have to go through a process to correctly assign each wheel to the correct sensor. I wonder if the eNV200 has a similar procedure.

Thanks Ian.. despite needing Bat Vision in the beginning...this was well worth watching through to the end. You points are good. and its great you let your friends try it out too !. As a local tradesman's van... I think it has a niche, but clearly adding 50 miles of range would be a game changer.. to yield 90-100 miles of range while still leaving you above the red zone. Another question.. is what can it tow ? I used my diesel golf 4 door hatch back as my "truck" for my one man electrical business.. so I know this would work quite well for specialist tradesmen.. tons of room. I think in 16 or `17 we will see Nissan announce a bigger leaf battery... and that will spill over to improve this thing. Sounds like you might have an 11or 12 leaf.. because the 13's I have driven here in US decidedly have the same 3 regen modes you found in the ENV .

+Capt Larry Ha ha, I was just way to excited and had to film every moment...and unfortunately the pick was delayed so got it at night. Yes is a couple of years this will be nailed. I spoke with Nissan at the time (local dealer) and tradesmen were put off as the range - when loaded - would not get them to their typical places of work and back (cant really pinch electric from their customers) - this was the VAN they were referring to of course.

Hi Ian! Very good job on the review and quite amusing too! I loved your victory cry after you got all the pallets into the van and I also really enjoyed it when you and your wife were fighting over the climate controls. lol I was feeling the same towards the end of the review as you were while you were summing up your feelings. I want to like it but the price and its range make it very difficult. It's just so simple on features compared to the Leaf and has such low range but it costs more. Over here we do have a 7 passenger wagon available. Actually, we can't get the 5 passenger and there is only one model of the 7 passenger available. Of course, it's the top model. So, over here the wagon version of the ENV-200 costs nearly $50,000! Now I know why they aren't in a hurry to sell the cars over here. I can't imagine anyone wanting this car for personal reasons. Really, thank you so much for doing this video.

Ian Sampson Yeah, the third row seats swing up toward the side window on each side of the van. I'm not a big fan of that because they are still quite a bit in the way sticking out on each side of the van. I don't know if it is possible, but if you are interested and there is some safe way of doing it, I could send you the catalog for the ENV-200 wagon so you could see how they work and how much luggage space you lose having the third row of seats. If you know of any way of trading info privately and safely let me know.

Your capsule summary encompasses my feelings on the ENV200, really... "eh, it's a van." It's a brilliant van, but it's still just a van. It's such an oversight that they didn't put a light in the charging port enclosure. More battery under the floor would be much better, as well.

I did a test drive of this car 2 days ago. I liked the Ev part, very silent and also quick and easy to drive. Otherwise compared to a Ford Transit Connect the seating position isn't too good, you sit too high and the steering wheel doesn't adjust to a comfortable position. The suspension is also very uncomfortable and too hard. I also notice the charging lid in the front opens too low so a bit uncomfortable to plug it in. Also, better range would not hurt. So Nissan; you have the right idea, but still not there yet.

***** Mike yes the charging point location is a little odd....you have to sort of bend at a right angle to plug the think in, and its also fiddly when actually doing this (as if you stand in the 'normal' position like when plugging in the leaf...in the ENV200 you cant see the holes for the plugs!)

Thanks for watching and the comments! Re the video length, it would be possible to just summarise, but I like to leave no stone unturned but also add the real life element to it, where it takes actual time to come across something / and or progress to understanding it, a little like the Nissan Leaf Diary videos I am doing, the first couple of months are quite long. With the ENV200 I didn't want to do it any injustice - or have people stating its all my fault that it couldn't go far, the video shows I did all I could to make the best of what I see as actually a pretty poor job. Just wish they had stuck a bigger battery in that massive space available, we would have bought one 100% for sure then. Genuinely disappointed. Chevy volt sound good, heard it has no rapid charge though which is interesting.

Fully on and control it with the accelerator so you could bring the car more or less to a complete halt. Gain the very last drops as it were of regen and also use it as an actual brake (still have the real brake of course!). You would definitely need the brake lights to come on with it set that hard though.

If this is the case I may cancel my order. :D. Also I believe when you have your foot on the break you can also press the accelerator and the car wont move. It's not until you start to release the break the drive re-engages allowing you to move forward.

Interesting thanks for that one! Yeah the next model up should offer the screen etc. Think I was lucky to get this one, VERY scarce at the moment. Going to keep an eye on things though as like I say in the video, if it had 7 seats and a little extra range we would ditch Amy's current Diesel for one. As it is....just would be impossible to own one as trip to our local super market (Gloucester) - ~20 miles there and 20 back would mean there was just ~10-15% left on the battery, not enough to then go out again without charging for an hour or 2.

Ian Sampson: Just watched your video - very informative, many thanks. Criticisms of its length would be reduced if you edited out the early part which is too dark to be if any use apart from the pallet load test. Nissan's current brochure shows there are 5 model variants of the e-NV200 - 3 Accenta and 2 Tekna. All have the reversing camera as standard and 7 seats is an option on all of them. You get the large screen if you have Nissan's sat nav option on the Tekna models. The battery is the identical pack as fitted to the 24kWh Leaf which reduces manufacturing costs by sharing the same battery between two vehicle types, but as Nissan make their own batteries I can't see any technical reason why they don't offer the 30kWh battery as an option. This would make even the van version much more viable for commercial use. Having to sit for 30 mins to recharge every 60 or so miles is unacceptably unproductive.

Hey Ian, Just on the car pushing when you're at lights with your foot on the break and still in drive. When I was learning to drive I was told to always put an auto car into Neutral, just like a manual car. I've always owned manual cars but sometimes use the work auto and it just seems to be a habit of everyone at work to put the car in neutral at the lights. We never go all the way to park at the lights. - - Laith...

Only difference is over hear we are told not to apply the footbrake as it puts the bright break lights on - which at night is not pleasant for the people sat behind - but your right N + Handbrake would be the answer. Ian Sampson Nissan Australia only brought one model into Australia in 2012. So while it will be brand new. It will be a 2012 model with a 2013 plate with a 2014 registration date. I've heard that there were 1000 in the first shipment for all of Australia and they still haven't sold all of them yet. Maybe not even half way yet. They are selling them outright at the moment. No lease. But the current deal is 0% interest for the first four years. So going to pay that off really quick, I hope. I plan on doing a walk around video like the one you did with your parents LEAF and yours. I found that really interesting because from what I can tell with the Australian ones is that they are a mix of all three version you get in the UK. - - Laith...

The LEAF doesn't use any power in drive at a traffic light. In a conventional auto there is always some forward traction applied, the LEAF however turns the motor off altogether when you are stationary with the brake depressed while in drive. To verify this plug in Leaf Spy and you can see the motor output is zero when stationary in drive. I used to put the LEAF into neutral when I first got it for the same concern you described to try and save energy. However the creep is simulated and totally unnecessary, presumably Nissan did this to make it 'feel' like a normal car. I wish there was a way to turn creep off.

Mine pushes against the break at all times when waiting at the lights, only way to stop it is to put it in N. Odd that they are different, it irks me that it keeps pushing (using power) and presumably stressing something out somewhere.

  • @JeanPierreWhite

    @JeanPierreWhite

    9 жыл бұрын

Ian Sampson The cars behave the same. The "pushing" is simulated. If you are totally still it doesn't use any energy, only if you actually let it creep by lifting the brake. Use LEAF Spy and you'll see that when the car is stationary in drive there is no motor output, let it creep and it will use a small amount. No point in using neutral to save energy, only if you want to defeat the creep altogether. Nissan went to a lot of trouble to simulate something that is unnecessary in an EV.

  • @IanSampsonRLO

    @IanSampsonRLO

Yes I think I see what you mean, it pushes against the breaks all the time....unless I press down hard then it stops. Tried it on the way home, if I approx. apply half brake (enough to hold the vehicle) it still pushes it forwards, but if I press down pretty hard it stops. I suppose creep helps on hill starts (mind you it has hillstart assist so maybe not!)

I can only think this adjustment is due to the extra weight they expect you to be carrying."

Ok. Logical. But I'm really interested what is the maximum regeneration power in kW. Leaf can about 36kW (on screen it shows up to 30 but with LeafSpy app you can see that it goes further). If eNV200 has half a ton of cargo 35kW would not be enough.

so these 'keys' assuming they are passive like a normal chip key, must have a pretty strong signal sent out by the car to power up and communicate with the key when it is outside the vehicle etc . seems like a lot of electro smog. Wish they'd just put the good bits on modern cars and not the silly gadgets, makes me not want to change from my old car. Just give us large batteries!

It's so comical to me through all the episodes to watch people so used to manual react to automatics. It almost reaches the same level of bewilderment of Americans that haven't seen/experienced manuals.

I think the issue is that Nissan are making there own battery's and these packs are only about 120-140wh/kg whereas most decent 18650 cells have an energy density of 220wh/kg.

***** Yeah, sure they will improve, takes time. Tesla seems at the forefront. I remember Elon Musk sniggering at the leaf a couple of years ago in a video interview. Well I pinch myself when I start to agree with him and tell myself 'He may snigger all he likes, all I know people have been driving around in Leafs - THE affordable EV with reasonable range for YEARS already and still he hasn't managed to release something in the same price range....so Tesla currently only meets the demands of the rich' - something which will change of course...but we are still waiting. I just think that Nissan certainly needs to be recognised and praised for producing such a great car and at a price most people can afford (be it new, leased or second hand purchase)...driving EV and for £2 per 100 miles is actually achievable...unlike with Tesla. Kind of off the point there a little, but its also kind of on point! In the ENV200 though I just wish they had crammed more battery in...somehow ;)

+Ian Sampson The biggest problem with the Tesla.. is that nobody has developed a good portable high voltage security fence to keep us "undesirables" away from the car.. you know like ones Tesla Owners have Around Their HOUSES !

+Stephen Gibb just wait a bit... Nissan is not sleeping. I love these pot shots... Nissan bets the farm, is the only real mass producer of Electric Cars... which are wildly successful at their job... and you kvetch because they don't have the energy density of a Pluitonium Reactor on the space shuttle.. Hard Cheese Jack. Did you happen to be alive to see the evolution of the VW Beetle ? This is the electric analog.. and it is mighty sophisticated.. Endless complexity ( volt) and endless expense ( tesla) are self limiting. Hide in the bushes and watch.

You can forget this car with the Charghing system : Typ1 and Chademo The Car is not usable, because both types are not a europe standard and Typ1 is slow as hell. Nissan uses not Typ2 which would load the car in 1 hour in whole europe. Type2 is the standard in europe. NIssan is sleeping in this charging sector. The E-Nv200 range is 100-110 km in real !!!

LOL, my Leaf battery was denigrated with only 10 bars and I only get 65 miles in city and I avoid the highway (which I may get 35 to 40 only). I will say I still love it and it is the best car ever! I guess the range is all in perspective.

why do car companys other than tesla design things to fail the range on this thing is a joke they could at least give an option of a 50% bigger battery pack I bet people would pay it would you ian pay an extra £2500 or £150 on lease

We are up in the mountains... with a smelly Salty Lake for company. Things here become political and sides taken without thought for what the individual should figure out for themselves. I've been a "conservative" all my life, AS IN, I save my money and buy the most efficient cars and appliances, insulate my home to keep costs down, but I get called a "liberal" as though what I do is political or a statement to others. I do not fit into any hole people like to cut for me and I suspect many other Leaf drivers are more informed than the average. Informed, not smarter, but we like to think of ourselves that way, don't we?

Well around here if you dont point out its an electric car no body knows, and if you do they very often assume its a hybrid - almost all are surprised its 100% electric, its great to have that conversation as most people are amazed.

Nissan, The Range ist not usable. A working hour in Europe costs about 30 Euros . I would spend more time at charging stations than be there for costumers. I realize that Nissan ave no clue what to do in this e-mobile sector.
