    "In Utero," the album, came out in 1993. Dates of older songs are misconstrued because they were pre-Internet. Kurt died in 1994. Kurt designed every aspect of this video, aside from the woman in the anatomical suit on the treadmill. On top of being a singer/guitarist, he was an artist. His artwork/style is very present in this video. The way symbols interact with each other, along with the shocking and macabre, is very Kurt. Love your reaction! You need to do "Drain You!" Also, if you didn't already know, the drummer, Dave Grohl, is now the frontman of the band the Foo Fighters.

    The whole "soft verses, loud chorus" thing is one of the defining traits of the grunge style of rock, and Nirvana was one of the primary bands responsible for popularizing it. Nirvana had the shortest career of the big four grunge bands at only three studio albums over five years, but are still probably one of the most influential bands of the last 30 years (the other three big grunge bands are Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains. If you haven't checked out any of them yet, definitely do so)

    Video explained: Many 90's Modern Rock bands, (labeled: "Alternative," by the press) were very political. And as Nirvana is really a punk rock band, they were one of the most vocal about their beliefs. Especially, in regard to women's and gay rights. And they were also very pro-choice. Even in the liner notes of their 1992 unreleased & B-sides album "Incesticide", Kurt wrote: "At this point I have a request for our fans. If any of you in any way hate homosexuals, people of different color, or women, please do this one favor for us -- leave us the fuck alone! Don't come to our shows and don't buy our records." So, in this 1993 video: a very old, Jesus in a Santa hat, is on life support, while feeding of the blood unborn babies. Because, in the early 90's, Abortion clinics were practically battle zones between protesters. Meanwhile, the blonde haired, blue eyed little girl is wearing a Capirote, (often mistaken for a KKK hat) which is a Spanish Easter hat. Which lands in the baby blood and turns it into a witch's hat. As "...No Kingdom has Shed More Blood, than the Kingdom of Christ." The flowers in the video are Poppies. -- Which as you know, is where opium comes from and is how heroin is manufactured. -- Kurt thought it would be funny to see him sleeping in field of poppies, even though his addiction already way out of control. -- Meanwhile, Chris and Dave are hugging each other on a bed, in order to piss off homophobic viewers. In fact, after Nirvana played Saturday Night Live in 1992, during the standard goodnights, before the end credits, Kurt and Chris French kissed each other. Then Chris frenched Dave. -- Everyone on the stage was shocked... I actually thought it was pretty funny.

    @Kobalent

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@kcbondurant7959 but the whole point of Nirvana's anti-establishment movement means that there's no 'correct' way to play. often times they even changed drastically the songs from performance to performance. they're great for beginners, and i don't think scaring people away with "it's hard to get them right" is too productive, since that's true for almost any song. I started learning guitar with GnR's Sweet Child o' Mine and it was incredibly helpful to keep track of my progress as i learned to play the song better over the years despite starting with an incredibly simplified version playing whatever sounded similar with the notes from the solo. plus Nirvana songs are just a ton of fun to play on guitar! Aneurysm and Drain You are so much fun and very simple, and Smells Like Teen Spirit is just a classic and extremely simple so a fantastic way to get introduced to Power Chords (which are the basis for most of their songs). Heart-Shaped Box is really good for learning the principles od Drop D tuning, Territorial Pissing is a fun chaotic song with 4 Power Chords, Love Buzz is great to practice interesting Bass riffs (even better if you mix the base notes and play the big power chord at the end of the phrase). Nirvana music is just so frigging cool to get started!

    Remember when Kurt said he couldn't even pass Guitar 101. I saw a video the other day titled Why Kurt Cobain was a great guitar player. It kind of changed my perspective about Kurt was just not the most skilled guitar player. I think that is like an urban legend because even hard core Nirvana fans say this. I have to disagree myself because he was doing things that were Bomb! I'm bringing it back, Bomb!

    So, on April 14, 1994, Pink Floyd was playing at Jack Murphy Stadium (later renamed Qualcomm Stadium) and i had floor seats. I'm out in the parking lot enjoying the carnival sort of experience that was happening that day when a wave of murmurs and then open wailing came from farther away in the crowd. Before the internet, news and emotions would literally wash over crowds and it was a crazy phenomena to get caught up in cause, like water, it has a momentum to it. Anyway, as the wave hit me i could finally make out what they were saying. "Kurt Cobain is dead!" It felt like a dream and everywhere i looked, everyone was either openly sobbing or they were on the verge of it. I sat on the asphalt tarmac of the stadium and cried for a stranger i had never met.

    Same thing we said in 1990. The sound was so different and that's what made Nirvana the sensation they were/are. They started the grunge movement of the 90s.

    The song Heart Shape Box was on the bands 3rd and last album In Utero which came out in 1993. Unfortunately Kurt Cobain would take his own life just one year later in 1994 by a shotgun. After the death of Kurt Cobain the band would break up shortly after his death.

    Great song always. Loved your analogy about falling or being pushed off a cliff. Sometimes you really get it. You could look forever into this song and hear many talk about all its various meanings. I do get his references to black tar heroin, and his use of Pisces and Cancer, his and Courtney’s astrological sign. I think about addiction to drugs and to her.

    Nirvana. Heart-Shaped Box. I'm not a lyric guy but it's hard to deny crazy poetry. My take is he is commenting on the slavery and hypocrisy of American/World society/politics. My guess is the heart shaped box is being placed in a box by humanity, while the box is in the shape of a heart, which sends the mixed/hypocritical message of I am going to jail you because I love you. His line of eating your cancer when you turn black is the same type of line, where he is expressing his willingness to love, care for and fix the very evil that enslaves him, by removing the inevitable black cancer the evil is over-taken by. Finally, the chorus is a rip on the hypocrisy, where the lie is that the evil is with us to protect and serve us, so Kurt says, if your asking what you can do for me, what you can do for me is hear my complaint, and the complaint is I have to be forever in your debt to your priceless advice, which is of course sarcasm and truth at the same time, depending on which person/party it's being applied to. I dunno...that's my take and I think the poetry is brilliant, and I don't even dig poetry. The only reason I even know the lyrics is because the music is just so darn catchy and awesome, that as an inevitability of listening to the track so many times, I learned the lyrics too. One of the best tracks of all-time IMO, and the proof in that pudding is how it crosses over musical genres and attracts listeners of all genres. Nirvana was much like the Beatles in the way they always used a common pop sensibility with their songs, as all tremendously succesful genre crossing acts do, in this case crossing the new new evolution/resurgence of hard rock/metal/alternative with pop music and a heavy dose of insanity to top it all off...or, maybe...Kurt was the sane one in a world of lunatics?. Nirvanas first album Nevermind, is pure pop and a masterpiece. The second, In Utero, is almost anti-pop, has some insanely great tracks, but is not usually regarded as the masterpiece that Nevermind is. I dunno...I'd say this track is about as masterpiece as it gets for fusion-pop. I would also say the track Milk It from In Utero, is one of the greatest metal tunes ever, for those who love a metal tune that sounds like destroying a hotel room - lol. O, PS - the little girl is dressed as Christian clergy, not KKK, and later she is dressed in the same outfit except a black one, which represents Satanism.
