(maybe older) people like that don't pay attention to video games as much as the guys in their (now) 30s and 20s do, let alone who created Mario. Not even everyone knows who Bill Gates is, might be different with Michael Jordon though. I would go as far as to say that not even people who make their hobby only video games never even knew about these exclusives unless they watch videos like this or are part of the underground people who specifically study, learn about, and hunt these rare variants "not available to the public". Generally speaking, scribbling on things does depreciate their value. Maybe that store owner was dumb for not looking up why that 3DS was "rare" solely based on the puzzle and dragons thing (or he might have thought that it was just some special edition that you can buy in stores, just like for the animal crossing one) when video games probably weren't his specialty. Miyamoto isn't on the same level of known (in the USA) as Walter Disney, Michael Jordon, or day I say Orlando Bloom. I would make the same mistake as the store owner if someone sold me anything related to soccer. Of course everyone who watches this video knows who Miyamoto is and will be upset and see one or both the store owner and seller as stupid, myself included, but for the 3DS yeah despite Nintendo games being my hobby I didn't even know of that contest or that game existed lol.

@@KimeramonRocks Generally I would agree with you. But considering that the store owner even had the original package, he should have noticed that there was something special with it. Both the package and the console itself basically shout in your face that it is special, with a specific date printed on it, with the word "Congratulation" and the information that it's from a competition held in 4 countries. It's okay to not know about this or recognize the value at first, but it's enough to at least do a simple Google search. And when you find out there are only four of these gems... man, you better put that thing on Ebay instead of in your store shelf for 150 bucks.

"Smudge" probable wasn't what the game store owner meant. Probably "doodle", and wasn't familiar with who Miyamoto is. Which sounds crazy, but a lot of older people just played video games without knowing who made them. Doesn't help that, when my dad started playing the NES, Miyamoto's name was mistranslated as "Miyahon" because the guy in the localization department wasn't sure how to read the Kanji of his surname and guessed.

Fun fact: the re-used ammo boxes for the Advance Wars DS were originally for Browning heavy machine guns, as indicated by: (a) the caliber, 12.7mm NATO, aka. .50 BMG, (b) the round count, 100, more than a minute of continuous fire in a Browning, and (c) that the box specifies belted ammunition, something only used in machine guns in general.

I mean it sounds like he barely got any money from it so it couldn't have been because he was desperate for some extra cash. Someone else in another comment said it likely got stolen or something and then pawned off and sadly I feel that has to be the case.

Wow that Puzzle and Dragons 3DS with Miyamoto's signature was wild. To not have any idea that it was a unique model with his signature rather than some random doodle on it is crazy if they worked in a game store. They could have believed it couldn't possibly be an authentic signature but what a mistake that was. Thank goodness it found it's way into the hands of those who want to preserve it. The fact it went for $150 like it was any used system is so unreal considering it might be one of the rarest systems around now and only in the last 5 years or so.
