I’m not a Nintendo console owner currently, but our GameCube broke when I was younger and my dad called Nintendo support when it was several years out of warranty. They replaced it free of charge, they basically ensured I’d continue being a gamer growing up, and it’s just amazing to think that a company was that willing to help its customers out. I’ll honestly never forget that. Thought I’d share a cool little story from my childhood.

The reason why the N64 had such a weird controller and a trigger on the middle handle was because they wanted you to be able to choose between using a D-pad, (By holding it normally), or using the Analog Stick, (By holding the middle and right handle). Hope this helps you understand the weird N64 controller design.
@shaun8062
2 ай бұрын
You know what's cool? You can actually play all of N64's best first person shooter games using the D-pad for strafing and movement while using your right hand in the middle for aiming and shooting, more similarly to how hand assignments are used in modern first person shooters like call of duty. Some early literature from nintendo even suggested using the d-pad for first person shooters. No one back then seemed to do it though, as they assumed the yellow c-buttons were the way, which was fine, but those buttons make it hard for anyone to go back to play goldeneye today. When I show them you can use the D-pad, kids pick it right up like any other dual controls on first person shooters (phone games, playstation, xbox etc.)

can you do a SEGA evolution?
The GameCube was also designed with CRTs in mind. Not necessarily a 4:3 CRT, and a lot of games had 16:9 modes (Sunshine did not), but primarily so. An LCD TV was not what the vast majority of people were playing 6th gen games on. They just didn't have them yet (and 480p games would have looked worse on them anyway).
I would like to mention that you weren’t entirely holding the N64 controller right for Mario 64: it’s a lot more comfortable if you put your left hand on the middle prong. That gives you direct access to the Z trigger and the joystick without stretching your hand, and the D Pad isn’t used at all in Mario 64 anyway.

How old is this dude to be so impressed by that TV? Must have been born in like 05 or something. The NES TV is also more fuzzy than it should be.
I remember those days when it first came out, my uncle bought the Nintendo, and we all have to share. We were not allowed to play until we clean everything up and do our homework, that was a motivation. I remember we all took turns calling out, “I’m first Mario, First Luigi, 2nd Mario, 3rd Mario and so forth. It was more fun playing together then, but now there’s so many options and easy to access to everything that each person prefer to play by themselves, there’s no social interaction. I missed those days when we all play together as a family
The Z-button on the N64 was in the middle because the intent was that you'd hold the controller by the middle grip when using the analog stick. The left grip was used when playing a game that only needed the directional pad.

Awesome vid, I remember wanting the Wii soo bad when I was a kid😂 I really liked my Wii U and got games like Splatoon, Super Smash Brothers, BOTW, Wind Waker etc. When you mentioned how you could still play the Wii U without the TV that brought back memories, and actually one of my earliest exposures to video games was through the Super Nintendo and getting familiar with Mario, Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong etc. Great Job.
Probably worth pointing out the IR sensor on the Wii had nothing to do with motion controls. The Wii remotes needed something that generated infrared light in order to display a pointer on screen.

People associate Wii U low sales as the console having a bad library and it's not the case at all. Let's not forget the most popular Zelda game was made for that, not the Switch.
On the n64 controller you can either have one hand on the left and right or you can have your left hand grasp the center nub and use the z trigger and joystick. Depending on the game.
The rubber cover for the Wii controller was to protect the flatscreen TVs people May have accidentally thrown the controller at! The strap was a first level projection to stop the throwing, the rubber case was for added protection and for people who didn’t use the strap

Text was very readable on the older tvs, you just don't know how to adjust the settings properly. That was part of the fun. It's like putting together a puzzle. You mentioned the Gamecube having a lack of online gaming, but the PS 2 didn't have online gaming either.
"Such a headbanger" then cue the video sample was pure Comedy Gold. The amount of research, editing and general awesomeness that goes into each production is quite frankly insane. Please. Don't ever stop.

What is crazy is that I bought the snes the year it came out and retired my Amstrad, Atari and sega mega drive, how time flies.
The NES did not sell in the UK, we were saturated with 8 bit microcomputers (esp. C64 and ZX Spectrum) and the Sega master system. By the time it was released in 87, the Amiga 500 and Atari ST were released making it look like a dinosaur. Console gaming didn't take off here until the early 90s
I can't believe there are people of his age that have never held an N64 controller. It's insane to me that someone needs to tell him to hold the handle with the active controls. It's like grandma trying to find "the internet" on her computer

My first console was a switch, and the simple interface made it very easy for me to understand! Also, its a hybrid, so its very versatile. Probably the best console in history. Fight me
"The joy of gaming didn't require extreme powered machine" one of the best lines ever in history of gaming.
Also one of the main reasons the PS2 was such a success compared to the GameCube was that it was marketed as a dvd player which were very new and expensive at the time.

Also it was weaker in raw power than the competition... but not thaaaaat weak, not like Wii vs PS3 and Xbox 360 level, but somewhat weaker than the Game cube and Xbox. This allowed the PS2 to be way cheaper (mainly in developing countries) while still sharing games with the competitors. The Xbox was the most powerfull, thus the most expensive, people would not choose it over the cheaper ones, the game cube and the PS2. The game cube was the one in the middle term in terms of power and price, but the mini DVDs made it harder to pirate gamnes... the PS2 was the cheaper one AND used regular DVDs, so pirating was very very easy... the console itself was cheaper and the games were almost for free in developing countries (piracy) making it the really only possible option for the average joe in huge developing countries like Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and etc.

In 40 years of gaming, Mario jumping into that painting in Mario 64 was probably the single most mind blowing experience I've had in gaming, ever. I love the concept of the Switch which is finally really catching on with handheld you can use on TV but around 2010 I did this with OnLive, a logitech controller and an Asus TF101 tablet on a 55" LED TV, no problem. I loved the versatility of being able to play both Wii and Gamecube games, as well as download games via the virtual channel. I had a Wii U too, but was kinda meh to me. Hated playing games on the gamepad and the pro controller always seemed kinda clunky to me.
