I think there are people who misunderstand this film. If it were only about lust and sex then the ending wouldn't be as moving and heartbreaking as it is. When she tells him "It's too late", when he finally begins to open up to her about himself and his feelings for her - it proves that it went beyond lust. It implies that if he had been open with her before, things might have been different. Elizabeth loves John but knows that the relationship is unhealthy and what it is costing her. John loved her as far as he was capable but realized it too late. He took things too far, and this coupled with his need for control and his fear of emotional intimacy drove her away. The last shot of him in the film (shot between bare walls, symbolizing how empty his life is), the utterly sad and defeated look on his face when he realizes that she isn't coming back, and the realization that he lost his chance at true love with her - is so touching, as is her walking away, crying, and briefly looking behind her. While Elizabeth is clearly heartbroken and even looks back once, she's out in the world, he's inside. I agree with the poster who said that John not going after Elizabeth showed that he really did love her, that he saw that it was her decision to make, and he respected that, even though he hoped she would change her mind and come back. Love stories don't always end happily, sometimes people love each other but are not good for each other. It took me a long time to discover this film, and I'm so glad I did.

I was in a relationship exactly like this. Ended with both our hearts being broken. That was 25 years ago. I missed him everyday. I never stopped loving him. I hoped that he would "snap out of it"...I did almost wait too long. I moved a thousand miles away. i just found out a couple of weeks ago that he died.I will forever love him. I am so lucky that we became friends again. I have never felt so much love in my life. But am glad I got away from that toxic relationship. Live and learn. Rest in Peace my love.

When actors play a "bad" guy, the key is to play the character so that you have empathy for him. You may not like him but understand where he is coming from. Mickey played John really well. I feel more sad for John because in the end, the viewer, and John, realize how alone and emotionally closed off he is. But having been with Liz, he felt for the first time the difference between love and sex. Hence the reference about how he feels when he holds her in his arms. He can't explain it but he feels it. I think thats why the ending is so sad. He feels his love for her, the loss of her and losing control of the course of the relationship.

Yes, the framing of him in the last scenes is very telling. Those bare walls symbolize how empty his life is. She's devastated, but at least she's outside, around people, and she has connections to others. But he's alone, in more ways than one. Losing her just clarifies how isolated he is.

For Elizabeth leaving John was the hardest thing to do but it was also a smart choice. When their relationship began she became intoxicated by the freedom of it all and the intense passion he showed towards her. Eventually John realized too late how much he truly loved her and when she left his life changed forever.

and hers too. Nothing good comes from the relationship. They destroy each other in the end. Elizabeth and John end up carrying the ghost of each other with them. John can never get over her and searches for her in everything he does. He's a broken depressed suicidal wreck playing Russian roulette with himself in the sequel as well as hiring blond hookers and calling them Elizabeth during sex and Elizabeth falls into another addiction and dies from a drug overdose. It's tragic.

One would think that if Elizabeth has the IMMENSE strength to walk away, then really...she can do anything. She can heal and grow from this. And be on another level of life. I believe that her saying goodbye was the start of this journey. And this strength of character is contrary to the storyline of ‘Another 9 1/2 weeks’ were Elizabeth is narrated to have died from a overdose. That’s just the narration of a nihilistic mindset that does not appreciate the journey of strength. The strength Elizabeth has shown here is the birth of many many more pure beautiful and joyous times ahead.

Marilyn Manson took "Sweet Dreams" to a whole new level. I still love Annie Lennox's voice too for "Sweet Dreams" A bit different from the book, but a damn good film holds up today.

This and the scene with the elderly painter (I never understood it’s inclusion when I first saw this as a kid but came to love it upon rewatching) are my favorites. Her journey mirrored Farnsworth - the contented lifestyle interrupted by discovery and celebration but then spiral into isolation, suffocating opulence and hedonism. Becoming numb and lost. One of my favorite lines from the book - and I’m paraphrasing here - is Elizabeth’s worry that having sustained a fevered passion for so long, would she ever again acclimate to being a more sustainable lukewarm again.

He was taking care of her and she asked him why he does it, how he knew she would like being treated like that. Then he said he saw himself in her. So he knew she needs to be cared, because this is something he needs as well... To me, it was always the most important scene of this film. Probably the only moment of John opening up. Sadly, the true story didn't romanticized the real relationship between the couple. In the book, they engaged into more hardcore BDSM behavior to the point where Mickey Rourke's character was literally more abusive toward Elizabeth (not her real name but a pen one). In the end, he left an unstable Elizabeth who had a breakdown at the front entrance of a hospital; thus, ending their affair. Sadly, no one ever really knew what became of him. However, Elizabeth became a published writer but obviously carried a lot of baggage because she committed suicide in her seventies.

Very similar to him back in the 80's born and raised in small town near Chicago (Algonquin) and worked in finance as well, parents were also very common nothing special. Its a profession with rich financial rewards but devoid of any emotional or personal satisfaction. All he was trying to do was test her to see if she really loved him. Thats how financial minds work completely analytical. In the end, he started to count to 50 to severe himself from the emotional pain. You don't see him crying andweeping like Elizebeth. Whoever wrote the screenplay knew the mentality of financial types all to well.

  • @59vlada

What may appear as "testing" in the movie is more likely him succumbing to his feeling of insecurity, making him act defensively, trying to distance himself from the perceived emotional threat- her - and hurting her in the process. There is nothing analytical in acting as if he wants to drive her away, the more he felt for her, the more so. Left curled on the bed, muttering "I love you" to the wall, he's the clear looser in this transaction, while she is walking out on the street shrugging off her tears, with no intention of ever looking back.

I would think he was counting to 50 so as to make it just another transaction in life. He could not bare the pain. His "I love you" as soon as the door shuts is what is really wrong with his life. A last moment attempt that was still a concealed attempt. Too much distance. But I think that is why the relationship did as well as it did in the first place.

He has not. He makes himself very vulnerable at the end, revealing about himself and giving up on the mystique he created as she knows so little about him. And he does all that realising that he loves her and is about to loose her. That is a very human response and not at all concrete and steel. That is a pivotal scene of the movie that really gives depth to their relationship and you seem to have miss it.

For the ones calling this a "love story" I just have to remind you that this is NOT a love story but a cautionary tale about leading with lust and sex. The entire thing is lopsided and it won't stand up without the support of friendship, mutual agreement, and commitment. The relationship won't last without all of the types of love. Friendship. Brotherly love. Commitment. If you are going somewhere then it won't work. If you are not friends it won't work. If you don't turn each other on sexually or if you can't stare lovingly into their eyes for hours at a time without wanting to look away, it won't work. All of those must be there or the relationship is not a love story. It was strictly sex for 9 1/2 weeks straight. That's all it was. No love story.

@@butter-fly16 I don't agree. A lot has been written about these feelings. The motels song 'total control', the book 50 shades of gray. There is something very powerful about an overwhelming physical attraction. I agree that it isn't the kind of Love you want in a relationship, or for life. But I think it's a very powerful experience to have. Ultimately it doesn't last unless the mind goes before the body - that's with anything - a life goal, your health, a relationship.... But the experience of a physical attraction so powerful that your mind feels weak and subordinate to your body, is something worth having, at least once in your life. It is definitely a kind of Love. A stranger once said to me ' if you haven't had the kind of relationship that ends in a way that you don't want to be friends with the other person, that you can't be friends with the other person, then you haven't felt love yet'. I didn't agree with him, because all my relationships at the time had been so wholesome, healthy and positive, I always stayed friends with my exes and they became my good friends over time. Then I had a relationship like this. Pure, powerful, physical attraction that simply subordinated me and taught me the power of a man. And I understood what that stranger meant. This movie encapsulated that experience. When the pain ends, and that powerful connection is ripped apart, you heal, and become a completely different person that is just more... Whole. So I would now say this is something everyone should experience. 🥂 Narcissistic abuse is non consensual. I suppose that's the distinction.

@@butter-fly16 in this film, two completely independent people, who were equals, consented to this relationship. Those are the distinguishing features : a. The power differential ( in this case they are equal) ; b. Consent ; and c. Independence. Hollywood is simply telling a story, a different kind of experience, worth having. That's the point of movies. To teach varied perspectives. If you experience a relationship like this, outside of a victim mentality, with all of the above distinguishing features, it is a beautiful, empowering experience. It definitely was for me. I would recommend it to anyone actually. Well, any woman anyway. Just gets you deeper into yourself - enter the era of multiple orgasms.
