Nina Teicholz - 'Red Meat and Health'

Ғылым және технология

Nina Teicholz is a New York Times bestselling investigative science journalist who has played a pivotal role in challenging the conventional wisdom on dietary fat. Her groundbreaking work, 'The Big Fat Surprise', which The Economist named as the #1 science book of 2014, has led to a profound rethinking on whether we have been wrong to think that fat, including saturated fat, causes disease.
Nina continues to explore the political, institutional, and industry forces that prevent better thinking on issues related to nutrition and science. She has been published in the New York Times, the New Yorker, the British Medical Journal, Gourmet, the Los Angeles Times and many other outlets.

I am 60 years old. All my life I ate meat. sometimes more, sometimes less. I eat just as much as I have appetite for it. ALWAYS purchased the high fat cuts. all my life have been eating heart, liver, kidney, tongue, stomach lining, yummmmmmmmmm. love the fat portion of meat barbequed.......it truly is a delicacy. Oh, and not to forget........bone marrow. my kids are now in their 30s and grew up on all of those delicacies. all their friends make fun of them and say......yuck. too bad , they don't know what they are missing. I would say our little family is healthier than any other family we know. my kids rarely got sick, are in super healthy shape and fit and strong. Oh, I forgot Liver Sausage.............just delectable. I am going to leave now get myself a nice thick piece of steak or liver. Oh, I forgot..............have excellent blood rates, low blood pressure, not a smitch of elevated anythign, I don't even have lower back pain.

Fat and grass fed meat is best for good health. Greenlanders tend to die after living in Norway after six years. Maybe high fat diet in Greenland better for health and lifespan. Most of the active 80 and 90 year old's (dancing) I know avoid doctors. When doctors went on strike in Saskatchewan in first month death dropped in half.

I am 54 and have been in and out of vegan, vegetarian, high fibre for past 14 years trying to gain better health, suffering from so called IBS due to abusing my body with fibre and fibre supplements. Today I had two tablespoons of saturated fat for lunch and the past two days a flat stomach for the first time since 14 years ago. I feel great.

I can't thank Nina Teicholz enough for this presentation, and I can't thank the owners of this channel enough for uploading it. When people approach me at work, inquiring as to how I lost 96 lbs, and I tell them about my low carb/intermittent fasting eating plan, one of the biggest reservations they have is the concern over the SUPPOSED deleterious effects of meat consumption. While I, during the course of my low carb weight loss journey, read many articles, watched may presentations, and listened to many podcasts which debunk the supposed health risks of eating meat, I never had a singular source that I could refer people to, that was concise, not filled with science jargon, which debunks this prevailing myth. I would have to spend an inordinate amount of time referring people to multiple videos, articles and podcast. Now, with this cogent and entertaining presentation, I have precisely that very succinct, convincing, and plain spoken source of information I need to allay the fears of those who have misgivings about eating meat on a low carb eating plan. Thank you so much!

Get a GTIR or a Kraft postprandial assay... OGTT+ insulin, basically. And cholesterol doesn't mean much either for heart health: test Coronary calcium levels, and the Triglycerides- to- HDL ratio is better.

I felt terrible following their diet. Was always hungry and felt bloated and couldn't sleep well couldn't build muscle and felt weak. My iron dropped to half the levels they should be. I'm 50, training very hard every day, my joints are twenty again, my brain is sharp as hell, I'm more creative, more happy, this is the best thing that happens to me ever. And every vegan I know is a mental mess. They have physical energy but they are blue and they have a lot of judgment and drama in their lives. Sure humans can live on vegetables, or fruits, or nuts, or whatever. The human body is a survival perfected machine. But to live and function optimally is a different thing. There's a reason we humans have canine teeth. And theey're no there for agression displays and fighting like the Mandrill Baboons. It also turns out that Hunter-Gatherer skeletons, when compared to those of the early agrarian farmers, centuries ago were much taller in height and bigger in muscle mass. This was a major surprise to scientists. One group in the British Isles that were known for their height and muscle mass were Highlanders. Before the crofting and before major land ownership, there was plenty of deer and cattle and this formed a reasonably large part of their diets. My Granddad, a Highlander, was 6' 4" tall and was well-built, and towered over many of his crew mates onboard the pre-Dreadnaught battleship, HMS Queen, during the Great War. And this was at the time when the average male height of the British Tommy was around 5' 4". William wallace and Rob Roy MacGregor were all tall, well-built men, as were those that got to eat a lot of meat including Edward Longshanks and Henry VIII, et al. It's not rocket (lettuce) science.

Thank you Nina! You are making a huge difference for so many. I have been low carbing for one year, have lost 35 pounds, and now have a perfect lipid profile (according to my doc). I'm fascinated with the results of your investigations into the origin and ongoing support of the government dietary guidelines that emphasize refined grains and vegetable oils. I have a theory, which is that the government is terrified of people switching over to eating real food. And it is all about the fact that bad food is cheap. They know that the food being recommended is unhealthy, but continue to recommend it as they believe it would be too expensive for the masses (and govt). I think this is a flawed argument, but may be one factor in why we are where we are today.

  • @___xyz___

    @___xyz___

    4 жыл бұрын

I am not (but assuming you are) American. However your idea transcends national borders. And it is not entirely flawed. For instance, we know for a fact that meat IN GENERAL costs more to produce than vegetables. It demands more not only of us, but of nature, as animals would have to feed on many times their own weight before they come to a size that is edible. That is especially true with cattle (and less with for instance chicken). And makes sense just if you look at how much fat is in grass fed beef, compared to how little is in grass. Obviously the cow (with its 12-14 stomachs) is not consuming the whole thing. So there is (ironically) sort of a counter argument to low carb if there ever is one. And the big corporations and politicians know this well. It is much easier to earn money off grains (and in your case corn), as it is so much cheaper to produce. And as an added bonus to these businesses, the ecological footprint of grains is well within the sustainable range of feeding 10 billion people. That of meat is unfortunately not... Technically, it sounds like this should make it a tug of war between environmentalists and dietitians/health conscious people such as ourselves for political support. This doesn't actually seem to be the case, as most people are convinced that there are so many flaws with meat to begin with that it should be phased out along with fat. And in a way that is a good thing. If everyone on the planet started eating like us, we would run short of food very quickly. So in that sense we should be thankful. But it hasn't always been like that. Back in the day (more like several thousand years ago) the people to animal ratio was much better. And this was sustainably achievable. You could've eaten 80% meat and the occasional greens and leaves your village shaman and legends had you convinced had healing properties, and everyone else could join you. And unless there was famine, there would really be no incentive to cut back. Asians discovered this problem early. Red meat simply wasn't abundant enough that most people could afford it, thus it was reserved for the wealthy, and became associated accordingly. There has been mentions by doctors of this difference between western and eastern bias in scientific articles regarding red meat in several low carb circles. Whereas red meat in modern times, due to the industrial revolution, is associated with poverty and laziness, it is still culturally associated with wealth in Asia, where there is still a general preference for higher quality. The outcomes of epidemiological studies show this bias clearly. So in a way, we can be very thankful to the Asian people who (on this own accord) still consume mostly rice, which is really not low carb. Notably in Japan, there have been so many historical famines that were resolved by rice, that it has been given an almost godlike status. We know that rice is void of nutrition, yet Japan, because of their practices, still rock the world's highest life expectancy. In spite of this, red meat is (today reluctantly) considered healthy. On a more subjective note, I am in favour of low carb because it works for my energy levels on a day to day basis. However, I'm also fond on plant products simply for the practical reasons of preservation and preparation. I would be hesitant to go full carnivore, but only because it's still too alien to me, and frankly my life is pretty good and I'm not ill. You don't change what works.

I heard “ You will keep on eating and eating until your body gets the nutrients it needs to live.” And “you are what you eat. “ The adipose tissue is. 16 to 1 ratio omega 6 to omega 3 in North Americans. I understand it should be 4 to 1 or better 1to 1. I carry 1000 meals on my body yet am still get hungry even on low carb. I think the body says keep on eating until the ratio is 4 to 1 or 1 to 1 which is optimal. So I cut omega 6 to as low as I can and omega 3 to as high as I can in my calorie limits and my body is normalizing. Getting healthier. Getting less hungry. Loosing weight. Good bloodwork, proper health. I think this is the next step after low carb.

Those northerners that ate mostly animals did it out of need because plants were not as available to them, and there health was not as good as you think. Autopsies have been shown on many of their corpses to have osteosclerosis from the high intake of animal foods. This is the cleaner animals compared to the factory farms that are pumped full of chemicals and cruelly treated by the way. So saying this is "better" than the western diet isn't saying much since not even the vegan nutritionists want anyone having the refined carbs/sugars that this lady is claiming that they do. The high refined carbs in the SAD (Standard American Diet) is not the same as the whole foods in a vegan/vegetarian diets being promoted by nutritionists. The SAD diet is high in saturated fat and refined carbs making it doubly bad for health. So yeah, if you take the refined carbs away from the saturated fat you are eating it is an improvement, the same way that being only stabbed is better than being stabbed and shot.

Let's see: people in the past, except for the very privileged or very lucky, had in general shorter lifespans of around 50, but that extension of lifespan we have today is mostly because antibiotics (and to some extent maybe vaccines), because of proactive and not preventive medicine. But that did not change for the better with the advent of Neolithic (grains, seeds, as staple), if anything it was for the worse. I can't say about the rest (never heard of osteoporosis being at play but whatever) but what I can say for sure is that Paleolithic people had no caries (cavities, tooth decay) at all, Neolithic people did. In fact one of the oldest and most gruesome instances of caries epidemics is among some Mesolithic Moroccans who had acorns as staple food. I can also say that we as species have been for 2-300 thousand years (i.e. nearly all our existence as Homo sapiens) eating primarily meat, along with some veggies (roots notably), fish, fruit, berries, etc. Not grain at all, maybe big seed pads as those of legumes but definitely not grass seeds, not until what seems to have been a major food crisis upon a double climatic crisis (end of the Ice Age, followed by a mini ice age known as the Younger Dryas with a very sudden onset, and again global warming) which lead some populations to began eating novelty foods as these and then cultivating them. People have been fermenting and cooking vegetables for at least some 100.000 years (evidence from Mozambique) but not grasses. Can you eat them? Sure. Is it good to eat them? Better than starving to death, but not better than old good steak with carrots. And fish! Fish (and other seafood) is most important: human depigmentation has been largely driven selectively by abandoning fish as staple. Neolithic Britons totally abandoned fish and seafood and only retook that healthy habit with the arrival of the Vikings, this may have happened across Europe because there was almost certainly very strong selection for whiter skin color everywhere. This is because vitamin D, which has been shown now to be crucial not just for prevention of rachitism but for a host of other health issues, notably neuronal (brain, etc.) development. The only dietary source of vitamin D is fish and seafood, else we have to synthesize it in our skin, hence we must become white and whiter (depending on latitude, of course, but being Eurocentric here). So if only for this reason, don't grow your kids vegetarian or vegan, you'll hurt them very badly for life, make sure they have some fish regularly. This is an issue that is not being talked about and, while I knew of it on theory, I didn't become aware until recently when, after some years of not eating almost any fish (because of sensibility to overfishing, trawling, etc., all very legitimate and important concerns) and not doing much outdoors life anymore, I developed some nasty psoriasis. When I researched on the matter (physicians only prescribe stuff, do not address lifestyle issues, at least not over here) I found that vitamin D was a major suspect and that a lot of victims of psoriasis were self-medicating themselves with UV sessions. I began eating some fish with regularity again and it's worked.

the problem though is factory farming. Most cows that everyone is eating were raised on a factory farm where they NEVER see a pasture and live in a pen in their own feces and are fed nothing but corn and soy (and sometimes even ground up animal parts) so what needs to happen is more people need to wake up to this and only eat red meat when they know it comes from a pasture raised cow on a local or organic farm. If we all do that, then the corn and soy farmers can stop being mono crop farmers and they can farm a variety of crops which many would rather do

As a health presenter, I find it an imperative to explain your own healthy appearance. No one is perfect, but these are enormous bags under her eyes. I don't want people to come in here and assume she has those bags because her ideas about meat are inaccurate. It could be she stares at a screen all day or doesn't sleep well. She's 53 and looks pretty awesomely healthy otherwise. If this isn't addressed, some extreme raw vegan will run away with the assumption that the bags are due to a meat diet. I doubt that is the reason. Nina did mention that she stayed up past 2am the night before. I am really enjoying this presentation otherwise. I rarely hear a well researched presentation from the red meat side like this one. Thanks Nina and uploader for this.

Thank you, Nina. I looked into the safety of HRT a few years ago. Safety seems to depend strongly on who is given the treatment (women near menopause fare better than older women) and on the nature of the treatment itself. It is a complex area that probably merits your close attention. I just wouldn’t want your viewers to conclude that HRT is always bad for health. It appears to be helpful at least for some women in some situations. If you want to tackle that subject in your next book, sign me up for a copy.

Smart woman, and a very smart presentation. It would be great for the Dietary Guidelines to stop making us sick.....

Wonderful lecture thank you 🌹 I would like to hear some thoughts on The China Study? That study is always used in arguments for not consuming meat.
