Dr. Gary Fettke - 'Is Fruit Good or Bad For You?'

Ғылым және технология

Dr. Gary Fettke is an Orthopaedic Surgeon practising in Launceston, Australia. Along with his wife Belinda, Gary has also opened the 'Nutrition for Life - Diabetes and Health Research Centre' based in Launceston which provides nutritional care around Tasmania and Australia.
Gary has a longstanding interest in the preventative aspects of health outcomes, particularly before operating on his patients. Recently an AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) investigation into Gary’s qualifications to give nutritional advice has concluded. This investigation (which lasted for more than two years) has resulted in Gary being issued a ‘caution’.
The Medical Board of Tasmania, under the umbrella of the Australian Health Practitioners Regulatory Authority, have advised him; ”In particular, that he does not provide specific advice or recommendations on the subject of nutrition and how it relates to the management of diabetes or the treatment and/or prevention of cancer.”

vegan non extreme - modern apples are fructose laden bags of sugar - nothing like what humans evolved to eat. You should take your Apple, peel it, eat the skin and throw away the rest. Then you’ll be eating something approximating what was once eaten by us and not a genetically modified bag of fruit candy

I've been doing keto for a few weeks and had strawberries. When you cut out grains, sugar, and fruit most of the time fruit tastes like dessert. The strawberries were SO sweet to me since my taste has changed on keto. It puts fruit in perspective. Fruit has a place but not to be eaten like vegetables and high quality meats are to be eaten.

Been living on nothing but fruit for decades. 400 total calories per day working physically 14 hour days and remaining in low BMI, no inflammation which always can be felt when having meat with family on holidays. I feel amazing. Don't really care about science which is usually wrong or a half truth with a religious like agenda. You can find a narrow minded scientific opinion on eating only Fruit, eating only vegetables, eating only meat, eating only organ meat, and fasting. Statistics lie. Fruit ripe in season, with vegetables and roots also in season is natural for our construction, but not everyone has a healthy gut and can live naturally after being domesticated and drugged for a profit 🐄 cow. At the end of the day one should listen within and maintain balance in all things. Don't listen to me either. Short of being a farmer the fruit and veggies we get are all artificial with less nutrition due to being premature and grown in profit centered mineral deficit soil with warfare chemical agraculture.

Applying the Adam & Eve story was brilliant on so many levels! That's actually a very profound concept. Thank you for that. Every time I try to tell people to stop eating their Franken-fruits, they always recite the same brainwashed script about how "healthy it is to eat fruit." ARGH! It's especially frustrating when I hear this coming from my friends who are trying to lose weight! They tell me about their "healthy, low fat breakfast" of cereal, fat-free milk and bananas. And they wonder why they're craving another meal by 11AM and can't seem to lose any weight.

Man até only fruit before the fall. After sun brought death into the world, life was required for life. One dies for one to live. We see God change our diet after the fall when talking to Noah. Where we once were told that fruit is our meat, we are now told that everything that walks on the earth and swims in the sea or flys in the air, aka animals, are now our meat. All from the fall. God never designed a system of animals eating each other’s. There was no death. Sorry if this is what the video says, haven’t watched it yet but wanted to share this before I forget. It’s have been meditating and praying about the fruit only diet for long time before God showed me the all meat diet is how to get better.

Well… it probably won’t kill you if you did small doses of it over a period of time, but you would become addicted and it does wreak havoc on your body in the long term. The same thing with sugar. It’s HIGHLY addictive, has no nutritional value that you can’t get from MEAT, and it will wreak havoc on all of your organs. So… no. No sugar at all, if you’re looking to be healthy and smart. However, you’re an adult so if you want to damage and/or end yourself, that’s your decision. Go take the sugar/heroine. I’ve been on a carnivore diet and I’ve never felt/been healthier in my life! If you don’t want to continue an addiction the best thing to do is to go completely off the offending substance. The best way to cure a sugar addiction is to stay satiated with healthy fats.

And I only ever pick that fruit when I'm out exercising, typically during a jog, because they grow along the route I take. Wild fruit is far less sweet and far more nutritious. Occasionally going out of ketosis for some wild fruit seems like it shouldn't be a problem. But I'll do it as an experiment and see how I feel. The berries should be coming out soon.

As a beekeeper, I am aware of some commercial honey sources eg China companies, adulterating their ‘honey’ by the deliberate addition of C4 (corn/cane sugars), C3 (rice syrups), and invert sugars. You can test the honey you buy, by filling a glass with water and adding a teaspoon of honey. If the honey is pure it will settle at the bottom and not dissolve. Adulterated or impure honey may dissolve or create a cloudy appearance when it is added to a glass of water.

“Like a normal person without diabetes” that is just mind blowing. Absolutely mind blowing. And I can absolutely believe a doctor would say that. I am a self taught engineer. I only got to where I am by being brutally honest with my systems thinking. If I don’t fix the machine or if I make it work, I don’t get paid. Which is why I can’t stand dealing with doctors. They think they are systems engineers of the human body, but they’re not. They are themselves machines running a rigid code. And like a basic computer program, they can not compute anything outside of their programming. Neither are they held liable if they fix or break the machines they “work” on.

She didn't buy it, so she never gave in, thus I'd wait for the meal. Fruit contains "grellin," hey? A hunger stimulator!

Lilac, I think you may have misunderstood something... Ghrelin is a naturally occurring hormone produced by our bodies. It doesn't come from the food. It spikes BEFORE mealtime, to remind us that it's time to eat (hunger sensations). Then there's the hormone that functions in a opposite sort of way: leptin. Leptin counteracts the signals to continue eating, sending the signals that tell our brain we're satiated. Unfortunately, most modern people have eaten their way into a state of leptin resistance, completely missing out on receiving those signals.

Before I knew it, I would be hungry again (to which she would tell us kids to have another apple! we had to complain so much to be allowed to eat anything else). I never got into that great of a habit of eating fruits (or veggies) because I always felt hungry so soon after those apples. I'm trying to make sure to eat more veg now, though I'm also looking at having fats and proteins too.

To raise HDL Avoid processed seed oils because they are high in Omega-6 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids better. Historically people ate an Omega:6 to Omega:3 ratio of 1:1. Now it can be as high as 20:1 Walk after lunch and supper for 30 minutes. (Doesn’t mean race walking) 2-3 times a week, add weight training to exercise regime, with a day off in between. The rest between is important. Improve sleep; in bed asleep by 10:00 pm, hormones released while sleeping repair body and help improve health. Dark, cool room is best. There are: Essential Amino acids Essential Fatty Acids But no essential carbohydrates. If triglycerides are higher, that is a sign carbs in diet are still too high. You want your Triglyceride:HDL ratio under 2, better under 1. Yours is 3. You’ve made a very good start. I wish you continued success, and feeling great!

There are people who can get away with eating more fruit and some who cant without making their health problems worse. Theres a lot of good truthful information in this talk. The problem is people always feel the need to sit on one side of the fence or the other and argue what works. What works is COMPLETELY dependant on your own body, genetics, food intolerances and health issues. People need to stop using their own personal experience to try and project what works for everyone. He is right that for millions of years fruit was eaten seasonally when available and it was not the hybridized fruit you see today in stores year round. Also depending on where you lived there was access to fruit more or less often depending on the weather. So different cultures had different diets for this reason. Experimenting with your own body is the only way to go and people need to stop insisting theres a perfect diet for humans.

This lecture is the closest I have seen that describes how fructose works. One slight mistake. Dr Fettke did not explain that fruits make you gain weight by causing you to eat more of everything, not just fruits. Fructose increases your appetite for all foods, and it also decreases your energy level so you can gain weight. He also quoted Dr Richard Johnson, author or The Fat Switch which describes this very process.

@ThumperOne if you would live in a country where they sell fruit in the market when it is ripe you would know that different fruits ripen at different times. For example, we had strawberries earlier but that period has passed, now we had cherries and that is ending, blueberries are now in season and water melons are starting to be good ... it is mid July now. Grapes are still far away from being is season that will be towards the end of Summer and beginning of the Fall. So it is with vegetables, there are different vegetables that come "online" at different times. The supermarkets, frozen foods and artificial ripening made this obvious knowledge obscure unfortunately. I am blessed to live in a country where I can walk 5 minutes to the nearest farmer's market every day and buy what is is season. Supermarkets did not kill this yet and I hope they never will. I would never buy fruits or vegetables in supermarkets.

I agree with everything except leafy green vegetables such as spinach the worst gout Attacks I have ever had in my life were caused by the oxalates in spinach. I was blaming liver and beef and rich saturated fat but over the years I learned that isn't what causes gout - spinach and some other green vegetables, And of course, sugar, are what's really causing it. I eat all the beef and beef liver that I want including butter and a lot of saturated fat for the last year - the first time since I was in my mid-30s I have zero gout. I am a 75-year-old male living in the US and I am of Dutch descent.

Absolutely fantastic talk with that very Australian no non-sense dry humor. Re supermarket fruits, what infuriates me are the so called "fresh fruit and vegetable" section of the likes of Coles and Woolworth here Down under in that each unit of a fruit/vegetable species looks exactly like all others. Same weight, size, shape, skin texture (perfect like Hollywood actors). They seem to have been made out of a mold. Many decades ago, when fruit and vegetable were natural, those of the same species appeared with a variety of shape, form, size, etc. Never perfect to look at as today's are. Yet they tasted so much better. As for their health benefits, listen to Dr Fettke again.

We avoid processed foods and eat as macrobiotic as possible. We enjoy lots of leafy greens. There are three of us here raising grass-fed beef. We are all over 65, working and healthy. I intend to eat local wild blueberries and keep my fruits in check. Too much of anything, even organic, is going to be out of balance. BTW, I just had my annual with bloodwork and am not diabetic. Happy about the dark chocolate and coffee! If I have to cut out the majority of refined sugars or even raw honey and maple syrup, then I would like to enjoy a modest fruit and cheese tray for desert on accasion, perhaps with 6 oz glass of good glass of red wine.

Thank you Gary for your ongoing research into all sorts of dietary assumptions we make and the role that so far has been played freely by the food industry, pharmaceutical industry and also Seventh Day Adventist religion promoting vegan/vegetarian/plant based ideology even though it is not healthy for many. This one was an eye-opener. Me, I haven't had any fruit since I began LCHF/keto back in March 2016. Apart from a couple of bowls of my own seasonal wild strawberries (with extra thick double cream and 90% dark chocolate of course) when they were ripe in Autumn. Has it done me harm? No, because as you so eloquently showed, I eat a lot of nutrient-dense veggies (particularly spinach, broccoli, asparagus, mushrooms and avocados too), plus nutrient-dense proteins in the form of fresh unprocessed meat, fish, cheese, eggs. All simply cooked by myself in raw coconut oil, olive oil, cream and butter. It is a win-win because I eat delicious food to satiety every day, two meals maximum a day, no snacking needed ever because I am full for hours afterwards.

It may work for you but not for another person. Humans have highly variable biochemistry and metabolism. I'm hypoglycaemic and experience sugar rushes and crashes from some fruits exactly as if they were canned soda. My father-in-law died of diabetic end-stage renal failure. It fell to do his finger pricks. I saw the terrifying surges in his blood sugar after he ate fruit. Unfortunately his love for fruit outweighed the evidence on the device. It really worries me that my husband - who fluctuates between prediabetic and diabetic - is following in daddy's footsteps. His HbA1c goes up, he cuts back on fruit, HbA1c goes down, he ratchets up on fruit. He does not drink soda, sweeten his coffee, eat jam, etc. When he was compliant with a very low fruit diet, his HbA1c dropped to the low end of normal. On the other hand, one of my sisters and my brother eat huge amounts of fruit with no ill-effects whatsoever!
