People say Nile's stuff is hard to play. I don't know what they're talking about. I just load up a cd or mp3s of theirs & press play. Boom, I'm playing Nile. Simple.

I had the hoodie they released for this album. It was my prized possession, I wore it every day. One night I went to a house party, got black out drunk and when I woke up in the morning the hoodie was gone. I searched everywhere for it but never found it. To this day, some 17 years later, I still miss that hoodie and get periodically pissed off I lost it. Such is life.

On Myspace, Nile ran a draw to see who would attend the Master Class given by Karl Saunders before the Concert in Cleveland. I was one of the winners, met the band and took the lesson. Then saw the soundcheck with back stage passes. I had made a King Tut themed flying V using Warmoth components, gold leafed with 24kt gold. I had stayed up all night to be ready and then asked Dallas if he wanted to use my King Tut Guitar for soundcheck. He realized I didnt tune the lowest string to D from E and handed it back. I was so close to hearing my guitar play this albums music, but he posed for photos with it after the check. Then we watched this albums concert.

Throughout time there have been only a handful of brutal albums that will live forever. This, my friends, is one of them. When you go years and years without hearing an album and then you put it on and remember every nuance and note, every riff by heart from the depths of your mind - you know it's one of the legacy albums. So many memories from this album. Metal will never die.

In the past 10-15 years I've become a lot more selective about my music. Back then, I just went for the most brutal and more importantly, the most obscure things I could find. The more my internet forum echochambers proclaimed "this is more brutal!" the more interested I was. Anything on the level of popularity of Nile was quickly abandonend. Lo and behold 15 years later, what stuck around? Nile. I haven't listened to this album in at least a year or two but the riffs are still fresh in my mind. The "brutality" is comparable if not better than whaterver shit Unique Leader band I was into at the time. The opening riff of Sacrifice Unto Sebek is burned into my brain and there it shall stay.

The riff in Chapter of Obeisance... at 23:34 is one of my favorite Nile riffs ever. The way it comes in out of nowhere is sick. Its only a 8 second or so riff. Nile has a lot of riffs like that where they could build a song off of it or maybe do a fading outro but for some reason only tease you with it.

This is one of the best death metal albums of all time. It is a masterpiece, and absolutely astounding in all aspects. I think that some death metal bands forget that in order to make heavy riffs, there’s much more required than just tuning low and chugging. What makes these riffs so heavy is their attitude, they just exude pure evil, thanks to their use of Egyptian scales and careful composition. Another feature is their excellent use of scary-sounding pinch harmonics, which sound like the guitar is literally crying out in pain. One guy put it “they sound like being stabbed in the neck with a scimitar.” Listening to Nile, I can imagine myself in a dark Egyptian tomb. I can clearly visualize what they’re talking about, because their playing seems to embody these concepts and brings them to life. Just listen to the outro breakdown of Von Unnausprechlichen Kulten. The drums in this album are also nuts, like being rained upon by blow after blow. I love how, at times, the growls sound like a giant slab of stone being dragged over another, like a passeway closing shut. And the lyrics. These guys did a LOT of research. Their material is a veritable crash course on ancient Egyptian Mythology. They don’t need to fill their lyrics with senseless amounts of gore in order to make them dark and foreboding. This album is one crushing riff after another, with morbid, suggestive lyrics that could easily be part of a longer horror novel. Sure, there may be lower-tuned bands out there, or bands with more violent lyrics, but I think that this band makes some of the absolute best death metal around. EDIT: Okay so it's not the most brutal album of all time like I previously claimed (I think that would be The Elysian Grandeval Galeriarch by Infant Annihilator.) but it is nonetheless a badass riff monster of a album, and one of the most well-done.
