    I shoot nikon for 30 years and switched to Sony before z came out, so invested a bunch e mount lenses. Bought a Zf for the look but only two cheap kid lenses until got an adapter to use all my e mount lenses. Now I use this Zf instead of A7RV. I like the Nikon color science, actually like the autofocus better than Sony cause it auto detect animal or human and the object detect in manual focus mode is very useful shooting macro. If there is anything to complain is the size and weight, it’s like a DSLR body.

    I totally get that regarding the autofocus and especially the manual focus system. It's shocking how great it is... I'm also surprised to hear your preference for the Zf over the a7rv... Either way, I do so how those would pair really well together. I had some issues with setting white balance as I didn't find the auto white balance reliable....whereas on the Sony it seems 'smarter' and faster. The Zf's color science seemed more magenta shifted but that could be me being dumb and user error! Either way, it's cool to hear your set up as that sounds ideal!

    I used to shoot primarily with Sony, the lenses are great and many to choose from. Never liked Sony colors though. Recently have got A7Cii for compactness, but colors still annoy me to no end, the shooting experience isn't great either, so don't really like this camera. Also got Nikon Z6ii, the colors are great, but don't like Nikon lenses, so using Sony lenses on adapter. Sony AF is probably better, it always finds the target and focusing is precise. It even finds the eyes of my pure black dog, which is quite a challenge. But Nikon AF feels faster. On both cameras I have shutter release blocked by AF and Nikon shutter delay is a split second while Sony is still thinking. Nikon has more AF misses though, not enough to make a practical difference for me. I'm looking at Zf, but will probably skip it because of the grip and also I don't like the articulated LCD. Hopefully Z6iii will check all the boxes.

    @@USGrant21st I get the struggle... We all seem to be chasing that white whale; looking for that camera that will meet all our needs, and with each release it feels like we somehow are getting closer and further away! Just curious what don't you like about the Sony A7CII's colors... Do they shift more in one direction or the other for you?

    @@BrianCatalano the ideal camera would have been already available if somebody just combined the best features of cameras available today.😁 Colors are subjective, I look at them and either like or not. Sony WB is overly warm even on White setting. But I can fix WB, that is not the reason. The tone curve isn't the reason either, as I made profiles using xrite and still no cigar. Sony colors seem to shift in different degree depending on the exposure, the shadows worse than highlights. Reflections also look different. When shooting a portrait in a grass, Sony would often produce very unpleasant gray-green tones in the shadows on the skin. Nikon would look more subtle and not objectionable. Also the high ISO seems to affect Sony colors more than Nikon. In good daylight I might not object about Sony colors that much, in many cases I just lower the color temperature and that's it. But in bad light Sony looks drab, Nikon still looks interesting. The colors might be wrong, but the impression is still good. I remember looking at DPR video about some Sony camera they shot in bad NYC weather. Video was taken with Nikon and pictures posted from Sony. It's day and night difference. In subjective terms, Nikon colors seem thicker. The difference like between oil painting and aquarelle. In Lightroom I can push Nikon colors harder than Sony before they become unpleasant. I did a lot of experiments, I tried to find an objective factor why there is this difference, but I didn't find it. Perhaps it's my color vision that makes the difference that other people can't see. For me, NEF files are very easy to edit and get pleasant colors, ARW files are difficult and often leave me unsatisfied.

  • @BrianCatalano

    @BrianCatalano

    3 ай бұрын

    @@USGrant21st that is a way better response than I could have hoped for... And first, I agree with you regarding NEF files over ARW, and if we could Frankenstein the current gen of cameras out today, I too could composite a "perfect" one that would really take at least one component from all major brands. As for your color description, I can see what you're saying without literally seeing it for myself. It is a subjective discernment, but I also understand your judgement even though I didn't spend enough time studying the Zf (nor did I even begin to master using it). Thank you though for being so comprehensive in your analysis of that Sony shift. It helps me think about color comparisons in general... Yet, even within Sony, the difference between my FX3 and the A74 is markedly noticeable. However, I have yet to fully understand or put words around what those differences are...

    I completely agree! I definitely was rushed trying to learn a whole new system and camera in under a week and I should have spent more time in the manual! It was probably a little hubris or wishful thinking that I could figure it out by just digging through the menus. It's also not a very intuitive system for me, but my bias in video probably shades that unfairly as well. That all being said, I wish I didn't have to send the camera back and if I end up with one again, I will likely refer back to this message before open the manual. Thank you, and I appreciate that!!

    Thanks for the review, there's not much on the internet regarding hybrid capabilities of the ZF. I'm quite on the fence, choosing between ZF, S5ii, XS20 or even FX30, tho FX30is far inferior in stills, and I'm half half shooter. But, how is the dynamic range and Nlog in your opinion? And does it overheats or at least gives a sign it could in long form video shooting? Thanks again!

    The z6 was already nice with its 8bit image and no log internal. My guess it will be pretty good as now you have internal 10 bit and log, better Af with the new Xspeed chip (Z9), full articulating screen and 8 stop stabilsation.

  • @BrianCatalano

    @BrianCatalano

    3 ай бұрын

    Thank you for that...and those are all great questions... I would have to refer to Gerald Undone for dynamic range with nlog. It was probably an unfair test against the slog3 in the zve1 though. However, I didn't get any sense of overheating. I didn't push it though with any long form videos. For me, though if that is your price range, I would look at the FX30 as I like its image (in both stills and video), and it's one of the cheapest of the bunch, and it has a fan! I have the FX3 and it's honestly my favorite body of any of my cameras. I like the S5ii as well but the autofocus would frustrate me... And then I don't think I like the xs20s image or stabilization, so I wouldn't consider that. There's also the A7Cii which I have a cheap ulanzi fan for, for longer recordings, and I think it's easily the best $2k hybrid. The a6700 with a fan could also be a consideration... Thanks again!!

Before I forget, I loved the shots of your friend with the orange trees (I think those were orange trees) and when she was holding the camera. Also, is a lack of motivation to take photos what drove you to pick up a Nikon? I'm also in a similar boat. I love photography, but making videos has my attention at this moment. It would be interesting (if you did) to see you sell a Sony camera for Nikon. It would feel to me like a knife through the heart, but I understand you aren't brand loyal...still, Team Sony! Hahaha The photo comparison between all cameras was really nice. The differences, I think, are negligible to the casual shooter, except maybe on the Pixel. Sheesh, there's a lot to unpack here, but I won't take all your time! Great video and great job on the work you put into making it!

    Thank you all around, and taking the time to watch and throw some good multi-layered questions, too... Getting me to think! Yes, I still love photography but the culling and editing process has always been a barrier to shooting more. I have a bunch more work to do to get the portrait pics where I want them... Whereas, with video, it's almost a process of just shooting and stringing clips together. There's less obsessing over each clip. Yet, it's a different beast altogether but the world has also shifted. People want reels and shorts now and not 2d images, so... I guess we're also just giving the world what they want as well! As for moving back to Nikon, I don't think I will ever be fully constrained into one system. I love all my Sonys but I have been really enjoying the Nikon Zfc and converting my Sony glass to it. I'm currently using the ZfC as my black and white, photo only camera. My A7CII as my true hybrid, my zve1 as my travel video or quick pickup video cam, and my fx3 for client work or my talking head. However, I probably should get rid of at least one Sony and I was hoping that maybe the Zf would replace the A7Cii but I think technically, the A7Cii is a better hybrid without question... Yet, it doesn't inspire me to take pictures, so I have to consider that as well. Long story short, these are all good problems to have--I'm grateful! Yes, my friend was standing in front of my lemon tree, but the fruit does have more of an orange color to it. This was her first modeling gig and she nailed it. I'm hoping she does it more! @@francoismarc3 I get that bias... But I have tried a lot of cameras and I have to say, Sony right now is just ahead of the pack. They are doing almost everything right with their cameras (but of course no brand is perfect or above criticism). However, the one thing they are missing is... a vibe. Their cameras are better but also boring. If the internals of the A7Cii was inside the Zf body with Sony's menu and a mix of boths picture profiles (and a grip included)... Or the a6700 inside of the ZfC body or Fuji x1006 body, Sony would be without competition. I think Sony knows this and I imagine they will probably release a retro styled, "cool" camera before long. That being said, it's nitpicking and mostly superfluous... But I do see Nikon coming up in the next few years. Yet, I was using Rich Portrait Tone in the Nikon for a bunch of shots which probably does skew white skin tones a bit red... as well as the nlog seemed to need a bit more corrections with that as well compared to slog3. Yet, you are right... fairly easy to correct.

I decided to keep the A7Cii in the interim as I do think it's a better camera in almost every department... except for some of the intangibles. The Zf is a lot more fun to use. The color profiles are so much better than Sony's and even though it's a bigger camera, I felt more discreet using it because people think it's a vintage camera... So people don't take it seriously for some reason. I recently bought the Zfc because I got it for super cheap and I wanted something fun to use like the Zf and to have a small crop sensor travel camera. Yet, compared to the a6700, it's not even close. Honestly, if the the A7Cii's sensor was in the Zf body, or the a6700's sensor in the Zfc's body with all the same Nikon picture controls, I'd switch to Nikon tomorrow. Nice video on the Zf, it’s a much better camera than we expected. While I like the design, I opted not to get one as I wouldn’t be happy with due them not giving it 10 bit 4:2:2 but 4:2:0. My Z6 II could do that, albeit externally and I want to improved video performance. As a photo camera, it is awesome, love the subject detection in manual focus mode and the low light AF performance is really great. I loved the Df and would prefer something with a better integrated grip and I think I just like a thicker body overall. Looked at Fuji and Panasonic and came away preferring the GFX (haven’t tried the XH line) 50 and 100S, as well as the Panasonic S1 line. I loved the Z6/6 II grip even though the body was smaller, tended to use it without a strap, much like the Z8 now. If you aren’t looking at a Z8, you should wait for the Z6 III to make your entry back into Nikon as you tend to do a lot of video and I think that camera will be a hit.

    I don't understand why people try a retro style camera and then do nothing but complain about its form factor and the arrangement of the controls which resemble the original cameras. If you don't want a retro camera and you don't want the retro experience, don't buy the darn thing. I shot a Nikon F2 f2 for about 20 years. I'd never complained about a grip. I never complained about the controls. I never complained about the location of anything because it was what it was. People these days are just too spoiled. Feel that everything should be tailored exactly to their exact requirements and as a manufacturer that is almost impossible to do. @@stevebogucki6236 Hello Steve, many valid points here... and that's a fair critique of a critique. Your gripe with my gripe, as ironic as it is, has merit. Many people complain about many things including cameras or camera-reviews instead of just finding what individually works for them and being at peace with it... And it sounds like you found a camera that works for you, worts and all, and even if you find it uncomfortable to hold, you are ok with it. I too try to embrace suffering, as it inevitably comes to us all in many forms or fashion... And finding that thin line between seeking improvements or a better way of navigating the world and not being grateful or feeling like a victim is a difficult line to find. It's both what keeps us evolving or can keep us stagnant... But it's also what can make us constantly unsatisfied. That all being said, I try to review cameras for people who may be in the market for one, so I try to take an objective view of it as I personally see it--the good and the bad--to inform people before they spend a ridiculous amount of money on something. I also presume people will watch several reviews and perspectives to give them a more rounded vantage point other than just mine... and my opinion of this camera is that it's both fantastic and a bit clunky. That may not be your feelings and that's great... We can have different opinions, and I respect you for sharing yours as I hope people will read your comment and take your feelings into consideration as well. @@BrianCatalano I reread my original post and I'm sorry it sounded a little harsh. Back in the day nobody in the world carried their camera in their hand for whole day, they had a strap that they used and the camera hung on from their neck. Nobody changed their film speed/ film sensitivity in the middle of a roll because that would ruin it. It would be impossible to develop. So that's why Auto ISO is not available on the top dials. It wasn't something available on those cameras. The ZF is not my main camera body. It's my secondary camera. It's my experience "The olden days " camera. In those days, no camera had a built-in grip. To expect that on a retro camera would be unrealistic since none existed at that time. So what I'm saying is in the olden days. Photography was a skill that required a lot from the photographer and not that much from the camera. Nowadays photography requires a lot from the camera and not that much from the photographer. Whereas nowadays, it is almost too easy and we lose something in that. However, in my experience now, the effort has all been back loaded to the post "processing" portion of photography. Even processing film in a dark room seems easy (and more enjoyable) as compared to the toil of culling and editing thousands of digital pics that I'll take in one afternoon...
