Ricci, if you have time and look back here I have a question I am sure you've been asked by many. I've had the Z9 in hand for 4 days. I'm going to give you a very specific scenario. You have a King fisher hovering and then dive. Suppose this is the event you want to photograph and you've staged it out where the bird fishes. Thus far the Z9 has been incredible tracking but I find the following needed: Wide Area AF Large for locking on, then leave it there or switch to 3D. I find myself sometimes using 3 different buttons for AF modes when shooting wildlife. To lock on moving targets (wide area - large). Lock on static targets (single point). Follow moving targets either 3D or Wide area large depending on what's going on. It would be great if Nikon have an AF mode where something like large area or single point were combined with 3D in one setting. 1. Your thoughts on the best way around this situation? 2. Do you ever program your "shutter" - release button for a half way press to engage 3D?

Sorry if this has been mentioned in the comments already.... But, I believe the artificial recording limit of 2:04:59 is about how the camera is taxed in Europe. True video cameras are taxed at a different (higher) rate than are still cameras... even when the still cameras have the ability to shoot video. I believe it's the EU driving this since 2005. If the camera can record 125 minutes (or more) without interruption, then it is treated as a true video camera and is taxed at the higher rate. The limit used to be 29 minutes and 59 seconds. I believe the photo lobby group persuaded the limit to be extended to 124 minutes and 59 seconds.

Yet again Nikon have nailed it ! I remember when I bought a D3 all those years ago and I was totally amazed by the battery life, since then Nikon pro bodies have been outstanding in this regard. Personally I'd still buy a spare just to be prudent! Cheers and thanks for sharing this Ricci, have a great weekend.

More than 2 hour 8k per battery life is great. one can use it for Feature films and Short film shoot all day with only 2 batteries. because this camera can switch on so quickly you can switch on/off during shoots compared to professional Cinema cameras they need 20/30 seconds to switch on so mostly on set they keep them switch on for hours.

Another excellent video Ricci. Lucky new Z9 owners are going to be so well prepared when they take delivery of these cameras! I wonder if electronic only shutters are going to lead to mirrorless cameras in the future with battery life matching or exceeding 'traditional' mech' shutter DSLRs, which would be very useful, if not vital, for mirrorless cameras in pro' use. I'm working with another brand mirrorless camera, R-ather good, but on a very long working day, I'll need twice as many batteries as compared to DSLR days.

Ricci, great video's and very informative. Do you think the Z9 will ever have a feature like the Olympus E-M1X i.e Pro Capture, in other words start taking pictures in a buffer as soon as the autofocus is activated. This would be really useful for Kingfishes etc where you often miss the 1st few images because your reaction times are not good enough. With the new fast CFE cards I would have thought it would be possible with a firmware upgrade. I would be interested to know your thoughts.

Great video again. Thank you. It would be great to see some images in DX more with lenses such as the 70-200 f2.5 or the 100-400 to check the quality that can be achieved. If using both DX crop and 1.4 TC still gives reasonable results it would make the 70-200 and 100-400 lens combo brilliantly versatile, on a Z9.

GREAT REVIEW, THANKS! I have a Z9 on order with BH who lists the specs for 4K Prores as only up to 29.97p and 4K 60 only with h265. I assumed I'd have to wait for firmware for the Prores 4K 60 option, unless there is a difference between your pre-production model and the production model. Is there a difference in this regard that you know of? And, thanks for doing your video testing in 10-bit NLOG, as that would be my standard workflow.

Thanks, Ricci. Those battery times are pretty impressive. However, I've been wondering how I might power the Z9 (when it arrives) with, say, the existing video rig I use with my Z6. I have a dummy EN-EL battery for that which plugs into the 8V DC port on a SmallRig V-Mount articulating plate. I'm guessing the USB-C input on the Z9 will be the ticket but unsure what cable and voltage will be appropriate to use with existing components. Any help would be appreciated.

Ciao Ricci, I hope you're having a great Christmas time. I'm using the Z9 since the 24th Dec, only stills no video and airplan mode, lot of vr for wildlife in the bush on perches , and I'm experiencing that the camera doesn't shoot more than 1800 shots, that if I understood well your experience, is much less what expected. Am I missing something, any setting that I forgot to change? Are you planning a video with settings for wildlife? I'm troubling a bit with the 500 pf, the 3d tracking isn't acting as you show, it lose systematically the bird, so I'd love to understand if is the compatibility with the lens or me. Cheers

Questions - Can this shoot with Anamorphic lenses. Can this also record 6k. can you use SSD drive to record videos just like BMPCC. because that will be great. if this can't shoot Anamorphic and 6k then maybe Nikon should add those options in future with firmware because that will be great. I am sure some Indy filmmaker and other filmakers will end up using it for Feature films and Web series. i am also interested to know if N-Raw will have option to record in different compressions like BMPCC have option to shoot 3:1 , 5:1 , 8:1 , 12:1 compression using BRAW. one more question, i have seen a Image of Z9 on Nikon official website with Blackmagic external recorder. is it also going to be able to record BRAW externally just like Z6II/Z7II.

On the Z9, One item I will be curious to hear your opinion about is how distracting the flashing lines will be when you release the shutter if you are in total silent mode. I think a much better option to "show" you actuated the shutter is to make the focus indicator turn from green to blue since the focus indicator is always in your direct field of view. If you are burst shooting it could just stay blue. if you are attempting to fire the shutter and you loose focus it could either flash blue or go back to red if you are in the mode which allows you to take a photo regardless if you are in focus or not. what are your thoughts on that...?

I have been looking at the Nisi web site and they have a range of kits available and I wondered if you have any suggestions on which would be the best kit for someone like me. Although I have a good range of F mount lenses I don’t have anything so wide hence the reason I am waiting for the Z9 to arrive. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated. The batteries being the same form factor and being able to use the old batteries to power the Z9 is handy. Not so handy is having to match batteries to chargers. I shoot a mixed system - I'll use the Z9s and my staff will use D5/D4s bodies. Having to keep track of "this battery looks the same, but can only work on this charger" is a bit of a pain, but we'll live with it (maybe color coordinated dots on batteries and chargers). Would have been nice if the new chargers could have charged the old batteries and vice versa.

Do you have videos coming up about noise performance? I know the R5 is incredible with noise performance and I hear that stacked sensors perform worse, in general. I placed a preorder but I’m curious because I always shoot in lower light scenarios.

Hi Ricci, just to be clear, Nikon Z9 can charge (internally) via USB C these batteries: En El18b, En El18c, and of course, En El18d. Because, I read from another review that only the latest En El18d can be charged internally via USB C. Or maybe I'm just confused.

Well I’d guess the 2hr5min stop is coz file size just starts to get impractical. Having to store a single file close to 2tb is just crazy. I’d be curious if all formats stop at that or just 8k?

How does the video file size compare with a static view and one with a lot of movement? Secondly, how does the battery stand up in cold weather? I regularly shoot at -30 to -40C before calculating the wind chill, in the winter. I can tell when my DSLRs are getting cold due to the sound, how do you tell that the Z9 is starting to complain?

  • @davidstewart9211

@Maciej Jan Długosz My personal experience is that half of the time, my DSLR will freeze up before the battery goes flat. To overcome the battery problems, I will use a battery grip which gives me a second battery. Since there is no shutter in the Z9 and if I am using manual focus, how do I tell that the Z9 is freezing up? The camera will be sitting on a tripod and I will be using the intervalometer.

@Maciej Jan Długosz Thank you for your reply and I hope that your part of Poland is Covid safe. My experience when talking to a Canon repair person is that they have labs that can mimic most weather conditions except for very low humidity. They come to Calgary for 0 humidity testing in the winter. To test for low temperature, all that you need is a freezer. Most electronic instruments that I have used in the past were rated for -20C. It had motors that when listening to them, you can tell when they were ready to fail. It has to do with the lubricants. In the north, we use 0W30 motor oil. My company truck will start at -40 without being plugged in using this motor oil. I have a lens warmer which just keeps the humidity from condensing on the front of the lens, and have not used a camera warmer as I just listen to the DSLR. I guess I will just use it until it fails and see what happens. When you live in a cold climate, what choice do we have? I shoot the Aurora, it is better on cold clear nights. Alaska is warmer than the Canadian Prairies and the Canadian Shield, but not as cold as Siberia, from what I have heard. On nights when the aurora is good, I will use multiple bodies and swap them out just before they fail. The colder that it is, the more often that they are swapped out. At -40C, I can usually get 20 to 30 minutes before the shutter freezes. The screen display rate slows down. This maybe what I have to watch for. Most electronic manufactures are not forthcoming on how to properly use their equipment outside of their suggested operating parameters. Just not using it and waiting for warmer weather is not always an option. Some of the conditions that I use my equipment under are at the extremes. Once I have tested my Z9, I will publish the results. Due to climate change, that may not happen this year.

@Maciej Jan Długosz Thank you for all the time that you spent on this research. The relative humidity in the winter time here is zero. Moisture inside a lens or anything else is not a problem as long as the device has air vents/leaks to let the moisture out. I checked Nikon's temperature specifications for the following cameras D6, D850, D750, Z7 and Z7 2. The temperature range was from 0 to 40C for all. The temperature range for Canada goes below 0 for 4 months of the year. Maybe Nikon's temperature specifications are very conservative. I had a look to see what NASA uses. I will make a few using bubble rap and electricians tape. Duct Tape doesn't like the cold. This one, I will be able to see the display through the bubbles and still hear the camera.

@Maciej Jan Długosz I will make my own. I do not like NASA's design. I want to be able to set my camera on a tripod, take a few test photographs, set up the intervalometer and then place the cover. As long as my cover slows the cooling of my camera down, that is a major benefit. Trying to warm the camera up while outside on a tripod may cause temperature stresses. I have frozen my cameras to failure many times and I want to monitor this so that I can replace it. I shoot a lot of composites that require many exposures, sometimes as much as 8 hours between the first to last exposure.
