I wish more "reviewers" on YT were like you. None of this backwards cap, RGB light backgrounds and obnoxious 'WHAT'S UP IT'S YOUR BOI" trash. This is what we really want.

Actually switched to Nikon Z6ii from the Sony A7R III because AF is BETTER on the Nikon. Not just the tracking, but the ease of moving & selecting focus points and focusing on static objects. Overall much easier to use and more reliable...AF was unpredictable on the A7RIII, it would get perfect focus SOME of the time, bust missed a lot too, better AF was the main reason for switching. That and Nikon did a nice job with their Z lens roadmap and the pricepoints, as opposed to the Sony free for all and the inaccessible Canon RF line. Obviusly the new A74 will be better than the Nikon AF wise, but after 2 years, I really hated the Sony!!

Thanx for the info about Z6II and ZII, I own Z6II and was tempted about Z7II resolution. But after seeing this video I will not buying it, cause I am mostly nature-wildlife photographer and mostly photoshooting in the woods.

Great review as always! It’ll be very interesting to see how these EXCELLENT cameras compare to Z8 & Z9 IF and when they come out!

I am really impressed that the Z6ii is able to shoot video and audio as well as it does, especially in your lowlight stills. I thought there would be a much larger difference in favor of the Z7ii. I'm hopeful they add some of these features like the in body stabilization to a next generation of Z50.

Haha yep, I started out on film using an F3, F4 and F75 and even those seem light years away from what we have now... My first DSLR was the D1 and the image quality different now is bonkers. Hope you found the video interesting :)

Thanks for another nice review, Chris. You have a very reasoned approach that I appreciate very much. Despite claiming otherwise, some reviewers simply conclude that the best camera is the one with the "better" tech specs. I agree with you that the Z7II is superior to the Z6II for certain kinds of photography and photographers, but the Z6II would be the preferred camera for many people for the reasons you stated. I currently own the Z7 and may switch to the Z6II for the kind of shooting I do. I look forward to your comparison of EVFs with the Sony and Canon offerings. Cheers.

So that comment - I think - should be on video. On video the Z6 II uses over sampling. That’s a great way of getting super sharp video as it uses most of the pixels of the sensor. The Z7 II uses pixel binning, it literally discards the information from a lot of pixels to downsample to 4K. The Z6 II is also better at low light both video and photography , so you’ll get sharper images because of less noise at higher iso. Russell, I really hear you on the Z7 II, there is little differentiation, but then again, that is a good think as the Z6 II is great too, what do you think you'd want in the Z7 II that it doesn't have now?

I'd love to do portraits or product photo. I'm in marketing but I've been saving for a good camera ( always dreamed of getting the D850) like the Z7II. I'm too frightened by the investment. I won't resign to be a full time photographer, the XT-4 looks sexy but being as expensive as the Z6ll I might as well get the 7... Not a question it's just my current dilemma

Great review. I’ve come to a similar conclusion. I have the Z6 and have been contemplating changing it for a z7ii as I like the idea of being able to crop the bigger megapixels, but for the time being I’ll hang on and see what Nikon comes out with next. Thanks again. 👍🏻

Thanks Richard, I think waiting to see what this year brings could be interesting, it's a shame nothing was announced at the photo conference last week. The Z7 II would be a fairly big upgrade from the Z6, the crop factor was somewhat addictive, but so was the amount of storage I needed!

Hi I just purchased a z6ii for videoing ballroom dancing . please tell me what lens would be good. I have a nikon 2470 vr but I think the dancers would be too far away. Should I use my Nikon 70200 flvr lens is that good for video ? Should I use a gimbal or tri pod ? Thank you very much !

It really really depends on shooting situation. I'd bring a 24-70 and 70-200 in that kind of situation, if you can get close the 24-70 would work well. I'd probably use a tripod but if you need moving shots then a gimball is adviseable.

Great comparison and thanks for the video. I am currently planning to upgrade from my D810 and mainly I shoot landscape and Wildlife. Also Photography is a hobby for me. Can you tell me which one I should go for as I also want to use my F mount lenses (hopefully I will not see any sharpness issues 24-70 / 70-200 2.8 and 200-500). Also if I were to get a Z lens which one will you recommend? Thanks

Glad you found it helpful. It’s an interesting questions, to be honest given your current setup I’d wait for the Z6/7 III or Z8 - whatever comes next. The Z9 is such a step up in terms of AF performance and given you currently have a D810 to me that’s probably he worth waiting for. If you really want to pull the trigger now I’d go Z6 II if you don’t need the resolution or Z7 II if you do - they are very similar cameras. If you need better low ISO, go Z6 II. You’ll be fine with your F lenses - get the FTZ 2 as it’s a nicer user experience. If I got any lens it’d be the 24-70 2.8 S or 70-200 2.8 S. the 24-120 F4 S is also a nice Allrounder

If there's a problem with holding the Z7ii steady how are we going to go with the Z9 which is rumoured to be in the 60+ mp range? I'm rethinking my decision to wait for one now. Currently using a D7100 so would be a big step up I suppose.

I think it’s just a case of when shooting with a high resolution sensor, technique suddenly becomes a lot more important. So yes you can get good handheld pictures, but equally you’re going to need it to be very steady to get the best out of them. I suspect the IBIS in the Z9 will be improved which will give another step up, and it’s worth nothing the D850 didn’t even have ibis at all so you already have an advantage with the Z7/Z7 II. I just wanted to point out that technically you need to think more about how you’re shooting 🙂

Think you might not have paid attention, listen back to 0:30 ;) If talking video, file formats are all the same, no benefit from that perspective over the Z6 II OR Z7 II. The video files from the Z6 II are generally better due to the processing method.

I think 24 mps is the sweet spot. 40 plus is too much, too big files, worse low light performance, etc.

For such a long review, 14 minutes, why didn't you include side by side, 4K 60FPS HDR comparison, or 4K HDR Photo Comparison ? Why is it so hard for reviewers to show us what we actually want ? I want to know which has better colors for video and photo. I want to shoot the best color in video at 4K 60FPS HDR, and I need to know if the Nikon 7ii can give me more COLOR , or the Nikon 6ii can give me more COLOR. ❤️

Thanks very much for your comment! So, I have an answer, you aren't going to like it though. KZread compresses footage to hell when anyone uploads it. I actually upload gigantic files in the hope of getting some level of detail on my images, but when it comes down to it, Google massively shrinks files uploaded in order to save space (which makes sense given how much content there is online). Secondly, when I recorded this, only the Z7 II had 4K 60, it now exists on the Z6 II but evaluation will take time. Of course, the irony of all of this is that you can't get 10 bit N Log in 4K 60, only 8 bit, so you won't get more colour on either. You of course might get more dynamic range, but I'd argue the oversampling on the Z6 II will always lead to better quality than pixel binning on the Z7 II. Also, why do reviewers not show you what they want? Because everyone wants something different, you query sounds very specialised, so I'd check out people who make content specifically around movie making with the Z series. I don't even have a HDR monitor, so I don't record in HDR and I don't upload in HDR. If you want a 4K 60 sample from the Z7 II check out my full Z7 II review, that includes one, I'll have a Z6 II update coming next month with an example. Sorry you didn't find what you were looking for but I hope you still found it of interst. Chris

@Hamer Reviews Thank-you for responding, because I have been quite earnestly seeking an answer to this question. So if you went side by side for video comparison between Z7ii, and Z6ii, at 4K 30 FPS, you would say that the Z6ii would have more color at its lowest ISO at 100, or that the Z7ii would have more color at ISO 60 ? My situation would be KZread videos, and I love better colors. I have studio lights, with the Neweer RGB 660 LEDs, and you can see the image result of that, with my C922 on my KZread channel. I want a massive upgrade, and this Nikon is what I am getting. I use the 4 point light system shining light at me, with room lights off, indoors. That would be most of what I would film. Looking forward to your response. ❤️

@@TechWeLove So, this is interesting, it's good to know your use case. First off, as you seem to be doing, stress less about 4K 60. So, on to colour. If you want the best dynamic range and colour detail, you need to shoot in 10 bit N log. The only way to do this on a Z6/Z6 II OR Z7 / Z7 II is to use an Atomos Ninja V. Shooting N log, you're ISO minimum will be 800 and it's a flat profile. You can then either use the Nikon LUT or manually colour grade, and that will give you the biggest breadth of colour reproduction that Nikon can do. If you're only shooting 8bit. you're limited to 16.8 million colours, in 10 bit you get just over a billion. If you just want great video quality and are shooting 8 bit, everything matters. Your lighting isn't bad but ideally you'd use something with a higher or more stable CRI - I use Aputure and Pixapro lights. You can get phenomenal video off the Z camera. It takes skill and learning as you go. If you get the Z6 II you can get some great video, just spend time learning and adapting. I'd ask you this, on 4k, what do you think of the quality of this video? Is it good? Do you like the colours, is it sharp? It was shot on a Z50 with 35mm 1.8 S... If you don't like it watch my Z7 II review, do you like that video? It was shot with the Z6 II & 24-70 2.8 S and that video also has 4K60 Z7 II video samples in it...

@@TechWeLove haha no it’s a very different reason. I’m still working on my colour grading skills. This was shot in 8 bit on the Z50, the Z7 II review was shot in 10 bit N log on the Z6 II... as I’m still learning to grade there are inconsistencies. That’s why there’s a difference.

Great video, thanks for all your insights! One suggestion, I had to watch some of your video twice because as an American your accent and speed of speaking was difficult to understand perhaps if you spoke slower it would be easier for us on the other side of the pond thanks so much!

I have three tips for you Hamer, and please do not feel offended; I just felt that your review is missing a few key points. 1) when you say "better", then please define what "better" is. This will be different for everyone and for different use cases. There is no such thing as "the best camera" without context. 2) please read the manual before commenting on things like AF. Even the original Z series AF was far better than many KZreadrs let to believe. This is most probably due to the fact that incorrect AF modes where selected in several use cases. There are many professional photographers out there who are using these camera's in fast action photography whiteout the slightest issue. They just know how the camera operates. For reference, look up what photographers such as Morton Miller and Hudson Henry have to say about AF. 3) what every KZread reviewer seems to miss is that a) apart form the Z glass, also Nikon's F glass can be used on the Z cameras, providing the Z system with a more than complete lens selection and b) Nikon has the most future proof camera system in the market due to the Z mount. Even "low end" Z lenses are crazy sharp and almost any third party lens can be adapted to the Z system camera. Please tell me how can you say things like "Nikon Z system is not up there with the Canon and Sony's"? I believe you are missing the important things in a camera system. KZreadrs should stop benchmarking camera based on eye AF and such. Because these features are not the most important features in a camera system. In the old days, good photographers where able to capture great images without all todays electronic gadgets that current camera systems have! More important things are: ergonomics, the mount, image quality, low light performance, etc. Nikon excels in all of those. And the ones I listed will have different levels of importance depending on the type of photography one is in.

Where do I begin... I must say I was in two minds of even replying to this, but I will, but I may delete this thread later. 1. This is a comparison... if I say better I'm probably referring to the other camera. 2. This point really annoyed me. It and point 3 embodies my issue with the hardcore Nikon community. Let me burst your bubble, currently, Nikon is NOT the best in the photographic industry. They just aren't. With regards to AF, do you have any idea how condescending you sound? Read the manual? In all honesty, that's just rude. I am very much aware of how the AF works in the Z system, as I was with the DSLRs (I've shot Nikon for over 15 years, from the D1 through to the D800 series...) I am aware of how it operates, having used the previous generation of Sony mirrorless and having had experience of Canon's initial R offering I hate to break it to you, Nikon's just isn't that good. It needs work. That doesn't mean pro photographers can't use them (reminder, I am using them for all my video...) but I can see Nikon needs to work on their AF algorithms and wider systems. Tracking is meh at best, especially for wildlife, I found other brands systems more effective. Criticising issues is not the same as saying don't buy it, I talk very highly of both of these cameras they are brilliant. My title isn't clickbatey... what are you trying to achieve? Point 3: All of this does not mean I dislike Nikon, or am bashing them. I have invested £10,000+ into the Nikon Z system over the last two years (add up the amount of gear I've reviewed, other than the Z7 II and 85mm 1.8 S I own it all). I am very much in the Nikon user camp, but that does not mean I have to believe, falsely, that Nikon is the best at everything. Nikon's lenses, yep, 100% Z mount glass is simply phenomenal. But it's very expensive and that for many might not be an option. You go on to list various features, they are not most important... wait for it... TO YOU. This is my opinion, and I know enough photographers for whom some of the things I point out are important - such as eye AF - which is really important these days. Lastly, other than the mount - not that many people care about flange distances so I'm not going to bore everyone with it - I call out the great low light performance (did you watch the whole video?) I'm pretty sure I discuss how great they feel in the hand - ergonomics and image quality. Your commentary is ill thought out, and very frustrating. These cameras are tools, just because I own them doesn't mean I need to say 'THESE ARE THE BEST EVER'. They're really good, but equally, there is room for improvement, and that's a good thing. We are in the era of hybrid photography where videography and photography sit on near equal footing for many people.

Lay off the kid. He’s being honest. Those guys you listed are all shills for Nikon and won’t ever criticize Nikon for anything. This is why Nikon won’t excel, because everyone makes excuses for them. Nice guys, but I know the inside scoop. Sorry, but Nikon is not up there with Canon and Sony with Z6/7 bodies. I love Nikon, but they are third behind. The Z7II is a nice camera, but it doesn’t come close to an R5. Focus system in Z7II is blah! Yes there are work arounds, but technology is supposed to take away work arounds. Z9 is a beast, but focus is still not better than R5 or an R6. Many are having front focus issues with Z9. I’m sure a firmware will fix it. Jared Polin said it best, if you’re a Nikon shooter, you have to spend 5500 to get a focus system almost as good as a 2500 R6. He’s unbiased and tells the truth. I also know first hand, because I own Nikon and Canon. I know you’re very defensive about your brand, but you should be honest with Nikon and tell them to get their crap together in technology. Also this kid is being honest. He has the right to criticize a camera he owns. He is the end user.

Getting sharper images from a smaller MP is a myth. If a larger MP is not as sharp as a smaller MP camera, something is wrong with that larger MP camera. This myth was busted years ago. Many have tested this also on the Canon R5/6 (20 vs 45mp) cameras. R5 showed more detail cause of more MP and was a tad sharper. Both have identical focus systems that’s why. The problem lies in the focus system on Z7II. I had it for a week and returned it. Focus doesn’t always nail it sharp. Z6 II does a better job. That’s what you are seeing. Nothing to do with more MP. More MP just amplified the missed focus. This is why many choose the Z6II over Z7II. It’s been a long topic.

I’m afraid it’s not a myth… the actual pixels are larger, less noise, sharper image - though that’s oversimplified of course. Also has to do with filters, processing etc. comparing Canon vs Nikon in this case might also be misguided as there’s not the same levels of filters and focussing. We will have to agree to disagree because I fundamentally disagree with you and you disagree with me. Appreciate your viewpoint and comment though 🙂

@@HamerReviews Must be a Nikon thing. Anyway the Z6II is better in many ways. I too bought the Z7II and was disappointed somewhat. I also shoot Canon too and have an R6. I love dual systems. I sold the Z6II to get Z7II and regret it. Focus is better on Z6II. Plus I love the larger pixels and lower noise.

Haha perhaps, honestly I find it so hard to compare camera companies equipment, I do videos as they are interesting but it’s hard trying to use objective comparisons. The canon system is great, I’d love to try the latest Sony kit but it’s hard to find affordable rentals. Still, it’s an interesting space 🙂
