Cheers for a good overview, Matty. I binged on videos last night, got to yours and promptly dozed off, out of sheer exhaustion. But, had it bookmarked, and watched it now. Enjoyed your comments, as always, spot-on, very much based on your extensive practical experience. Regarding recording and overheating, I think this one will do very well at higher resolutions, as it has ~1/2 the resolution of the Z8, so it will take significantly longer to reach similar temperatures. I would imagine, for most jobs, it will do well, provided ambient temperature is on a comfortable level. Anyway, looking forward to your official review once the consumer-version is in your hands. Great video, I'm surprised you are the only reviewer that shows the z6iii next to the z8 and z9 for a great size comparison... Exactly what I was looking for! The dog freakout in the intro gave me a good laugh!

I'm a stills photographer with a Z8 and am considering a backup body. I've had the Z6II in the past, but was not happy with focusing on action (great for slower moving subjects). I think the Z6III takes care of that issue. I want to thank you for your review! To answer your question about other videos I've watched/will watch they are: Steve Perry, Ricci Talks, The Art of Photography, PetaPixel & Matt Irwin. I'm fortunate to live near a brick and mortar store (Procam near Chicago, IL) where they're hosting a hands on experience with the Z6III in a couple of days

Thanks Matt, this was my first of the Z6iii videos. I'm an enthusiast only, so I wasn't seriously considering the Z6iii, but I was interested to see if Nikon was going to add another mech shutter-less camera to the line-up. I guess we're not there yet, but this partially stacked sensor is pretty interesting, and I do wonder if any other manufacturers will go that route too.

Thanks, Mat for your prerelease review. I am feeling like while there is an improved AF with this camera it may not be as big as those of us with previous models are hoping for. I have had my Z6II since launch and while it is a nice camera I still feel I can only use my copy outside where there is lots of light. Once I ever try using it inside it tends to struggle to get a good AF lock and the exposure and white balance can be all over the place. I have had Nikon look at it and they say they even replaced the sensor but with no improvements. This forces me to keep using my D750 for about everything as its focus is 100% better and seems to nail all the exposure and white balance better too. It seems to me the Z6 and II were a step back from the D750 in a lot of ways and would love it if you could please when do you a later review to compare to it too. I am sure there must be still plenty of others who still find their D750 to be the better camera but are very much on their last legs (my top card slot just last night doesn't seem to allow a card to stay in properly anymore.). I would even say that in most situations my Panasonic G7 which is much older will take a better photo than my Z6II especially inside.

Thank you. As usual, a great presentation. I do have a question. First some background. The Nikon Z lenses do not have a focusing window readout on the lens barrel (feet and meters). I looked at the Zf and its viewfinder does have a slider that runs across the bottom. But, it does not tell you the actual focus point in feet. Now, for my question. Does the Z6iii viewfinder display the actual focus point in feet? This may seem like nit picking, but if your trying to set the hyperfocal distance for landscape or street shooting, this kind of readout is important. Many thanks.

Happy for all the video and hybrid shooters out there. Seems to be a great camera for them. I am curious to see if they continue the Z7 line with more focus on photography. The only thing I want and still miss is a better flash integration, especially a better flash sync speed. It seems like the former leader in flash support (CLS) has totally forgotten about us flash photographers. 1/200th sync speed is worse than with DSLR from 2007 (D3) 😢

Hi Matt, does it have the AirGlu time code function of the Z8 and Z9 and have they kept the Hi-Res zoom function even though it would now only be from 6k to 4K, more like a 1.5x zoom instead of 2x? 👍🏾🙏🏾

my Sony a1 (thus I imagine all sony cameras) also has that same strap lug - card door design flaw.

I just heard that they are saying it will record video in any format for two hours and five minutes. Ricci tried to test it for overheating and his fully charged battery ran out at one hour and forty-four minutes with no heat warnings other than warning that his battery might be hot. I can't remember what format he was using.

Great review Matt. I always thought of buying another mirror less camera for a backup to my Z9. While my D800 is capable, it’d be nice to have a camera with the same mount and similar AF capabilities.

Hey Matt? Can this camera do focus bracketing or focus stacking?

I have a Z9, and ordered the Z6 III for for handheld portraiture. I expect its autofocus to be a noticeable improvement over my older second body, a Z7 II). I'm also hoping the 1024 240 looks good! I do wish the midrange cameras would move to all CF Express B. I don't really like SD, and don't like keeping two different card formats in the same body. I've watched like six videos, though I admit to multitasking while most of them were playing. :)

The biggest question I have is with the RAW file. Is it going to work with my existing software (Mac and Capture One) or will I need to wait for Apple to come up with new drivers and for Capture One to update their software?

I do hope that Z5ii (if it ever comes out) keeps tilting screen. If i could choose i would recomend to have the same procesor in all cameras, as well as autofocus (like canon has now), but have slower speed and other stuff. Double SD card is also preferable in that camera as well.

I've watched 3 other z6III videos. The Fro says auto focusing is still an issue. Please check using wide area box....

Thanks for the preview. Yours was the third video, after PetaPixel (Chris & Jordan) and Ricci. Almost everything seems to be about what was expected, except for the partially stacked sensor and the increased EVF resolution. The Z6III at $2500 USD, and the Z8 with rebates to $3500, have ended the Z7 series.

I mean I've heard of it, and it's a codec, but I have no clue what it's good for. The Z8 is amazing but I would rather have a smaller/lighter body. The Z6 III fits that bill but the lower resolution is a drawback.

If I didn't have a Z9, I would have gotten a Z8 rather than a Z6 III. But since I have the larger body already for what Z8/Z9 do, I was able to go to the Z6 III, so I could have a smaller and lighter handheld with upgraded autofocus. I'll sell my Z7 II.

I'm curious about the image noise at high ISO's. Is it appreciably better than a Z8 at 6400 and higher, for example?

Would love to see this compared with nikon ZF to see if the price difference actually brings any major stills/photography difference!

So did AF struggle with finding dog's eyes? Is it better than A7iv? The latter has difficulties finding my black dog eyes.

I didn't think I'd have as hard of a time deciding which way to go between the Z8 and Z6III. I expected to be all in on the Z6III, but the flip screen of all things is making me reconsider. The card door also made me pause. That's the kind of thing that isn't a big deal, but would annoy me to no end. So, it's not the specs of the camera, but the physical features. Other than that, they really are blurring the lines between these cameras. What's a Z7III going to be?

Hi Matt, you seem like the guy to answer my question... If your looking for a mid range camera specifically for low light and challenging lighting scenarios, would R6ii be your go to, or is the Z6iii suitable too. I'm invested in Nikon gear, but sick of having to rely on DSLR and auto-assist beams on speedlights to focus in tricky areas. Want to fully move over to mirrorless... but so far I haven't found a body that I can fully trust.

I love the variable angle screen on my Zf, but my biggest fear with those is breaking them off accidentally (haven't ever done that, but in some respects, the tilty screens are a bit more protected in that regard since they are a bit more rigid). I think while the Z8's dual axis tilt screen is not a flippy screen, it's a step up from the vertical tilting screen on the previous Z models and perhaps gives you the best of both worlds (although it cannot flip around to the side or down, but at least you can tilt it up in portrait mode and in some respects, might be better than a flippy screen in that mode particularly if you need to lay the camera on the ground). To be honest though, this is sorto f what I was expecting when I saw the "Ready to Perform" teaser. It's mostly a video update with some other updates that stills photographers will find useful, like improved AF and the flippyg screen, but at the same time, may be a little bit of a letdown as a lot of people I talked to thought it was going to be 26-30 MP, which I always kind of didn't think Nikon would go that route with the Mark III, since the Z8 is 45MP and the Z7 II is 45MP (And a Z7 III may very well be 60MP) so if you need higher res, your only option is the Z8 if you need speed and resolution or Z7 II if you just need resolution. But again, this is sort of what I expected and is probably appropriate. Hopefully the AF is improved though, because some of the video clips did show some lag with tracking but again that could be because it's using a pre-production firmware.

Dynamic range? Anywhere near to 850?

Matt, interesting camera. I have been holding off on buying the Z8 and retiring my D850 till I saw what the Z6III was going to be. I am struggling with the 24 MP as I enjoy bird photography and I feel I will loose too much cropping capability. With the D850 I could crop almost as much as I want and I image it is the same with the Z8/Z9. Anyway, pricing is definately a consideration. Right now the difference is $1000 between the Z6iii and the Z8. BTW, yours was the 4th Z6iii first impressions video.

Here in the UK £2,699 is too much for me. Ive ordered a ZF for street and travel photography. Cost £1,500. I'm sure it will suffice, plus its a beautiful looking camera.

No sensor shield is a huge omission on any Z series camera after a welcome appearance on the Z8 plus ISO only down to a hundred means it’s a miss not a hit

At least you don't film paint drying. That would take forever. Jokes aside, the max video limit is 2 hours 5 minutes. So, you'll want to make sure to restart your recording every 2 hours. That seems like a hassle, but it answers my question of who would need a camera to run longer than 2 hours for a single take.

Take off the lug. Replace with a Peak Design connector dongly thing using detal floss looped through/around/back through and you are all set.

Autofocus - EYE AF - and how often its hitting right on eye or front or back focusing.

Those video quality aspects are astonishing. 6k raw pff... They really pushed that 24 mp sensor. My Nikon D850 which is a very good camera is 4k at 30 fps.

I have been a Nikon user for many years, a modern Nikon compares the colors of the d750-d850, I use a z6II and I am not going to spend more money on a modern Nikon, everything remains the same, the colors of the dslr We are the best. I must say that your videos are very good examples in everything, I think many people will agree, the camera is pure marketing. a hug friend....

I wish reviewer would test cameras at local gigs. It is a real test of the AF, dynamic range, ISO performance. This is a fairly simple scenario which even the Z6 II would be alright at. At a gig the D500 is great, the A7 IV is incredible and the Z6 II is a near unusable mess at times or slow but passable at others. Obviously I'm not saying every reviewer should at all but it's a good test in my opinion and I haven't really seen anyone push it that hard. (Z6 II colours and ISO performance is great at gigs)

nobody has yet tested (ore shared) the pixel shift, especially in terms of reliability and usability, but in any case it's a shame that it doesn't combine files in camera ...

This camera is every bit as good if not better (due to better video specs) as the Sony A7iv and R6ii. I'll take the Nikon for the CFExpress B card. A is redonkulously overpriced. It's great to be in the market for a new camera these days.

I like the way you give us the option of looking at your incredibly beautiful model as you speak rather than just having you in the frame! You really are so generous with your models. This is my second review after Petapixel's. I am struck by the gorgeous colors in both of the reviews. I am so old school that I rarely flip out the screen on my D500 so I don't think the vari-angle screen will be such a deal killer for me as it is for some other photography centered camera buyers. I think I would rather get this or the Z8 over the z62 as I would definitely want the xpeed7 processor. If I'm going to finally get into the Z system I would want the latest and greatest tech. Interestingly enough, the pricing does not really differentiate the $2500 z62 that much from the z8 now on sale for $3,500 with great condition used ones at around $3,000

Like many of us, I bought a Zf. I would be interested in seeing a comparison with the Zf, especially concerning autofocus performance. Since the Z6iii also has the damned, dreaded, user experience destroying flippy screen (at least the Z6iii is actually a video camera) I am not seeing anything that compels me to want it over the Zf.

@@theclifbar Sure, it's simple really, it takes you out of the Center especially when tilting. for low and high shots. You can argue that isn't a big deal, but it destroys composition (unless you spray and prey) and it's a liability that puts your gear at risk by adding a snag point and may make you extend you posture to use making you a liability in crowds like at weddings. Bottom line is, if you're not a vlogger (really Nikon is not going to win that market share anytime soon, so why even pander?) flip-out screens on cameras are a liability

@@waynerm002 BM cine cameras have the ability to record data directly to a fast USB-C SSD which have terabytes of storage. Internal recording is great but the cf type B cards are expensive especially if you shooting video.

@@JWPanimation I understand but, most people aren’t shooting 6K RAW all the time and you can shoot some of that on fast SD cards. It would be nice to have although, not having it, isn’t a deal breaker. I like that they make it easy for that solo shooter to have everything internally, instead of needing an external recorder. Got a Ninja V to get 10bit out of the Z6 II, you can still use one but, the camera will not output RAW signal.

Since I'm not particularly interested in video tthere is nothing that would compel me to upgrade my Zf as my 24mp backup.

AF points doesn't indicate same old AF module as Gen II doesn't it. It has to do with the overall mpx count and the grouping of pixels to clusters. Ratios See Z6i and Z7i - the same numbers of af points like today still Z7- Z8/9

I am kind of surprised by the backlash on the flip screen. The myth that the flip screen is more fragile should have been debunked ages ago. In fact, your screen would be better protected from scratches in your bags because the screen can face inwards. My only complaint is again the asymmetrical card slots, which would drag the pricey CFE-B card to UHS-II speed, however, this time around I can leave the second card slot empty and have the camera backup automatically to the cloud.

Yes I wonder how many people have actually broken their flippy screen. I have had 2 cameras with them D5500 and the Zfc no problems yet. I am careful how I handle them, and yes they can be good for protection

Look at the prices of Angelbird CF express cards compared to UHS-II cards. CFexpress cards prices have really come down. They also improve your workflow for getting the photos off your camera and into your computer.

I'm not worried about the fragility, but the flip screen seems more aimed at videographers. Nothing wrong with that, but a tilt screen would serve me better. I'm surprised they don't have both features in all new cameras now.

People are just being angry for no reason. It happens with every camera launch. it's not like flip out screen haven't existed for years and years. This camera has stupendously good video specs, of course it's going to use the more video-centric flip out screen.

Nikon need to standardise the button positions.It is a PITA having to change from camera to camera. Why do NIKON not realise this!

Z6iii is still 2 to 3 years late in comparison. Now nikon should bring out a Z7 or ZG with 45MP in the same body with lower video specs at USD2500 for photographers. Then it will be competitive.

They would have gone for a fullystacked censor removed machanical shutter to balance price, could have come up with a better ai af better than z8 or on par with canon sony, wouldnt have restricted 4k 120 to dx mode only. or atleast jumped to 33-36MP to satisfy still photographer too cutting a7iv competition

I still have a D750 and upgrade FOMO. I think I might chill out and buy a Lumix GX8 or something, and just unwind. All this new tech, yeah it can be useful but it's got nothing to do with photography. With the art of discovery. With being somewhere. But if I eventually do get this guy, I'll remove the strap lugs anyway. So they won't bother me.

Hey now you have the Z6ii and Z6 at reduced prices and used prices. The Z lens are really nice. If you already have all the F mount lens you ever wanted no Need to get a Lumix, Keep your D750. People buy Lumix for video not stills.

@@williambuford6136 Hmm, MicroFourNerds (google her) might disagree regarding Lumix being for video. In any case, I should not care about what people use it for. I am not those people, after all. ;) Regarding the Z series, to be honest, I don't need it. But, I might really want it. The 14-30 is way wider than my 18-35, and the stabilisation in the ZF and Z6 III is apparently very, very good. I just watched Hudson Henry's video where he showed a shot of a milky waterfall, taken without a tripod with a 75mm lens at 1/2 second exposure, not even bracing himself either. I don't like the word, but that is sort of a game-changer for me. I think another brand (I think it was Olympus) was able to do this as well, and I was always a bit envious of it. And this comes on top off all other things mirrorless offers. Image review in the viewfinder, AF all over the frame, exposure preview, more advanced AF. I stil don't know if I'll do it. The thing is, if I go traveling with a hot new camera, I might be more of a target for theft. And in any case, I'll have to pay more for insurance. When I wrote my initial post a few days ago I was a bit down, exhausted from the bickering about whose AF is better and who has the biggest (or was it smallest?)... camera. ;) Still, years ago I was curious about Lumix MFT, but I never got around to try it out. And there is one other thing. I like scuba diving, and I have an RX100 V with an underwater housing for that. But there is the Lumix GM1, which is the smaller interchangeable lens camera ever made (or is that the Pentax Q?). And there is an underwater housing for it. Now, ergonomics-wise it's not great, but - and the idea just popped into my mind recently - traveling with both that and a bigger MFT body would have the advantage of being able to reuse lenses. But at the same time, I know an MFT camera is never going to be as good as a fullframe. But it is much smaller and lighter. Not that I'm old or anything, but I do like to travel light. I am still on a DSLR. I haven't made any choices yet. But I can experiment if I want to.

I expected a bigger body and ergonomic like a D200. I am a little bit disappointed. Internally it is top. The flip/twist screen make it a high-end v-logger camera. The Z9 need a firmware update with the expanded C1/C2 capabilities.

Looks like a massive improvement over the older Z6II, but disappointing price at launch for Nikon Australia listed @ $4500.00 AUD is very ambitious, Nikon are having you on it's a lot of money . This is too much for this camera and is almost double that of the older Z6II you can buy for $2300 AUD now. I don't see this selling in the bucket loads. Inflation, cost of living pressures globally who is going to buy this ? The hobby person enthusiast can't and won't be able to afford it . Pros and semi pro influencer will just buy the better Z8 that's on sale. The new Z6III price is too close to Z8 half yearly sale prices around $5500.00 AUD now, You defiantly buy the Z8 . Z8 and is better has no rolling shutter unlike the new z6III still has it , because they kept mechanical shutter that has a finite life cycle and at certain higher frame rates with electronic shutter setting, it's going to be noticeable. Sensor read out speed is reportedly "3" times better than Z6II but no exact figures yet? so it is not as fast as the Z8. So you will get the rolling shutter in some instances. The price needed to be around $2899.00 to $2999.00 AUD and not $1000 bucks cheaper than the power house superior Z8. Wait until its on sale in 12 months time then the price might be more realistic .

I've been around too long to be constantly hit by G.A.S., and one thing I know from experience, for me it's best to wait a few months after a product comes out before making up my mind. In addition, it will also pay off much better for me to have ice in my stomach, and wait for between one or two years before I buy. Because then the price is usually more reasonable, and you also know a little more about the faults/cons via several others serious photographers who are not paid by Nikon or are fanboys, because then it is easier to make the right decision .....

Finally a good mid-level Full Frame camera from Nikon that can truly compete against Sony cameras.

The Z6III looks good but i feel it's not much improvement for photographers, apart from AF, most improvements are for videographers

Videographers won't buy z6iii when z8 and z9 are not really that far in price if you are really going to make video so z6iii is for ... like ... nobody :D

Unfortunately not, and as someone with over $50k in Nikon gear it’s leading me to consider switching to Sony. I can only assume they’re holding back the feature for their next high MP flagship.

Reading the Press Release, it appears almost all the Hype is about Video, which doesn't interest me the Least. They apparently improved the Low Light Focusing. Did they improve the actual Low Light Image Performance? I wonder how the Partially Stacked Sensor will perform in actual Picture taking(again I don't give a Rodent's Rectum about Video)

Those are great questions. Bigger pixels than the Z8, but not a fully stacked sensor. I was wondering the same thing about low light performance. In days to come we should see some reviews covering this. At least I hope so.

Not a fan of the screen, so it’s not the camera for me. I hope they release a Z7III with a tilt screen and more MPs.

I enjoy your videos, but i'd rather wait until you can give a full balanced review of it's good and bad points instead these videos seem like free adverts for Nikon

At the end of the day, regardless of the Fluff, it's main ingredient is still a $2500 24MP camera.

~Z63 410EQJ 's old 24MP CMOS has no difference in image quality with D610 D750 ~ Non-native stack brings huge cost increase. It's just flying wires~ You need to worry about power and glue aging caused by overheating and CMOS glass fogging~ There are two glue seals between the flying wires on the CMOS and the CMOS low-pass infrared glass Glue overheating and aging will cause the CMOS low-pass infrared cutoff glass to age and turn yellow. The damage period is uncertain and depends on the heat, but it will definitely be damaged

The camera records only one slot. What kind of video can we talk about?

Bottom line - for new cameras the only thing that’s going to change 90 percent of most shots/video image quality is the autofocus. In this price range it’s just starting to get close to 2 and 3 year old Canon’s and Sony’s. Why has Nikon not been able to put digital hot shoes on any of there full frame cameras when other brands have had for years. No shutter cover ?

"Nikon can't go wrong unless they do a childish flip out screen" well shit. 35 years later Nikon seems to no longer fit stills Togs....

@@notapplicable9312 Canon which has 45% of the market has only the Canor R3 without a flippy screen.Al other Canon cameras has it. Sony A7IV, which since his release, is the most sold camera has it. So the most sold cameras has it.
