Nikon Z6 III - First Impressions on Image Quality

Nikon Z6 III - First Impressions
Nikon has just released a new camera with a partially stacked sensor. It might be the start of the development of cameras that are more suited for video as for photography. In many ways the Z6 III seems to be primed for video first applications with its wide range of raw and other video formats. I am comparing the image quality of the 24 MP sensor of the Z6 III with the other stacked sensor from Nikon - the 45 MP stacked sensor from the Z9. I think that the lower noise fast sensor of the Z6 III is a natural partner for the slower lenses in the Nikon lineup. Firstly, the Nikon Zoom Z 180-600 F/6.3 - that I am using in this video exclusively with a 1.4 Tc.

Yes - it is really nice for a Zoom giving you 840 mm at a minimum focussing distance of only 2.4 m ! With the Z6 III the narrow aperture of F/9 is less of an issue - so I think this is a really good combination.

@@DynNat Maybe I will try this tc on mine z. I tried a 1.4x on the 200-500mm and it was usable. This z system is more quality.

@@augusto_alves Yes this is exactly my impression. I did not like the 200-500 with a Tc as well. I think you will be much happier with this combination. Check out the Musk Ox Video - I was using the 180-600 with a Tc there as well !

Thank you very much for yout test. What is your opinion about the combo 180-600 with 1,4 X? I have a nikon D500 pair with 200-500 and have to choose between z8 and z6iii. What is your opinion? Thanks in advance!!

I had the 200-500 including the 1.4 times Tc on my Nikon Z50 with the FTZ. The 180-600 with Tc is clearly better than the 200-500 in image quality - balance, AF performance, weight, weather sealing, and image stabilization. Even on the Z9 (having a similar pixel pitch as the Z50 and the D500) I see hardly any loss in sharpness with the Tc at 840 mm. What I notice with the Tc at 840 mm on high contrast edges is a slight color fringing (check out the Musk OX in the snow video) - it is easy to fix in post. Also the 180-600 goes to 600 where it is sharper than the 200-500 at 500 mm. In short it is always on one of my bodies and will be used in particular on the Z6 III. Regarding the Z8 and the Z6 III in combination with the 180-600 + Tc. Both combinations work (I do not have a Z8 but it's the same sensor than on the Z9) extremely well. Coming from a D500 if you want the ability to crop the Z8 is better (same pixel pitch as the D500) - but you are limited in shutter speeds since the ISO noise starts get iffy beyond ISO 10000. The Z6III easily manages ISO 64000 allowing for higher shutter speeds and more action. So it depends on your use case and shooting scenarios.....

@@prokremelskidezolati1426 I know this video. In terms of chromatic aberrations I observe very little in my copy of the 180-600. I had very small amount of those (blue color fringing) in the high contrast situation when photographing musk oxes (check out the video) in the snow against bright environments with the Z9, but they were easy to correct. So I cannot confirm the finding reported in this post you mention. We have to keep in mind that there are copy to copy variations in all of theses lenses and the design of this lens is fairly complex. Cheers.

I have my original Z6 yet... My big complaint is the poor follow-up approach to the face or eyes focus tracking it has (tons of times camera is unable to find a person’s face). Z6III is actually much better in this area? Thanks! 🤗

I just switched from a Z6 to the Z6 III as part of a trade-in deal. The Z6 III is great on eyes of humans, birds, and mammals. I did not add the bird tracking test shots I did, but it was really good and spot on even when the ducks or other animals are moving into your direction - i.e. towards you. It is roughly on the level of the Z9. The dedicated "Bird AF" of the Z9 and Z8 is currently missing on the Z6 III. This is a pity as I was using this AF mode also for some larger insects such as dragonflies where this AF mode found the eyes of the bigger insects. However, Nikon has upgraded its firmware on the pro level cameras frequently and my understanding is that the Z6 III is the 24.5 MP pro level system for Nikon. So we hopefully see some future upgrades ! Even though I have to say it has very good AF features already in video and photography and it is much much better than the Z6 or the Z6II.

Waiting for those pundits who will comment about how bad the dynamic range of the Z6-3 vs Z6-2😂 as spread by TN.. Z6-3 is still an amazing upgrade over the previous gen Z6’s.👍

  • @DynNat

The Z6-3 has great image quality in particular at high ISO where I was really positively surprised. It is also true that all stacked sensor have slightly lower dynamic range due to their higher read out speed and the associated "electronic base level" . So it's a bit of an academic discussion - pushing the image by 4+ stops is something I have never done in any real picture or video that I took. Like I wrote - I definitely value the video features over any small loss in dynamic range. It's a great camera. Nikon keeps producing the Z6 II and ZF - so the nice situation is that we can choose what we prefer. Thank you for commenting !

Thank you for your comment. Where did you get the information that the Z6 III has a poor low light autofocus ? It is actually the opposite the low light autofocus is very good. In an upcoming video on birds in flight I was out with the Z6 III very early in the morning in a foggy environment. The AF also for birds in flight had nearly a 100 % success rate. I hope to finish it this week, but I am not sure. So stay tuned in case you are interested.
