Nikon p900 impressions vs canon sx50hs

Nikon P900 super zoom review. Having used the Nikon P900 for a while now i give you my thoughts and impressions on this great telezoom bridge camera. I also compare it to my canon SX50HS and discuss whether the Nikon P900 is worth the upgrade if you already own the classic SX50 from Canon. I include examples of the Nikon P900 zoom test in both video and still images.

    Thanks for a very useful overview. You mentioned many things others have ignored including sharpness problems, zoom sweet spots & focus problems. What do you think of the B700 compared to the P900- Would the B700's increase in pixels compensate for the different zoom ranges? Are the images any better or worse? We are trying to decide between them & the B700 seems better for our uses- if there's no major problems with it. The RAW files, HD filming & longer shutter speed (nearly 30 sec compared to 16sec) outweighing over the zoom difference. Or do you think the P900 is still a better buy- all things considered? We are on a low budget at the moment & appreciate any help in this big decision for us! Cheers. from Dee & Ram

    i went through the same questions. For sheer zoom resolving the p900 is the one. But as you say there are other considerations. However the raw workflow isnt worth it for me on these cameras given the excellent jpegs the p900 can output. The image stabalising if you are going to hand hold is better than the b700. The extra mega pixels do not trump the extra zoom range. The p900 is a better camera imho albeit no 4k.

    Hi, would you still suggest me to buy P900 nowadays ? I don't have 1000 € for P1000, and there are few P900s under 300 € out there. I've been an amateur astronomer since grade school and 1976 I got myself a 3 inch reflector telescope from Edmund Scientific. I used to view the moon Jupiter's moons Saturn's rings and other objects. Since then I have numerous telescopes including telescopes including a Celestron C8 cassegrain and a 12 in Newtonian. I shouldn't forget my Beast 10 inch F7 cave Optical manufacturer 1961. I've taken pictures through all of them encoding video. I purchased a p900 2 years ago and I have to say that it is a joy to use when I want to just grab a handheld telescope that will give me the pictures of the moon, Jupiter's moons, and Saturn's rings. This camera is remarkable and I obtain some pretty nice images handheld. I have not piggyback it on a tracking equatorial Mount yet. I can only imagine what I might obtain by doing so. You're right about about the 2000 millimeter lens. That said I consistently get pictures of the Moon that I can share without the hassle of setting up a scope with a separate camera attached. When I get this camera eventually attached to a equatorial tracking mount I will be shooting numerous pictures and stacking them forget it final hopefully great shot. Keep up the good work

    thanks for the back story, its interesting to hear how people use this camera. Telephoto cameras seem to have been put on the back burner for now by the big manufacturers, we got the p900 just in time before it went quiet. Every day we hear the p1000 rumours, one day it will come :)

    Thanks a lot, mate. Really appreciate you putting in the time to explain this so clearly. Thinking of picking up a P900 next week. I've seen the P1000 rumours, but it seems these rumours have been going on for well over 18 months without any evidence! Could end up waiting a whole year to find out that there never were such plans from Nikon.

    Digital zoom is better than cropping. I don't know exactly how it works, but in my tests it wielded far better results than just cropping after. And pixels are not equivalent to zoom, otherwise you could just use a full frame camera with a 300mm lens and get the same results, if it had enough pixels after the image was cropped. You said you had to back from the full zoom for increased sharpness, so I don't know if it's so better than Canon SX50HS or 60HS. I'm in doubt about which one to buy for fun. I already have a DLSR that I use for many things, but I want a camera to shoot birds and do fun stuff with a long zoom in a compact size. The fact that this camera lose sharpness at its highest zoom, don't have RAW and in manual mode you can't see changes made directly on the screen is really turning me off. Canon SX60HS have RAW, and that really helps with cropping, and have high sharpness until the end, as normally canon lenses do. I would love to see a comparison using digital zoom with similar images, I bet the SX60HS can do the same job as the p900.

  • @alanrossreviews

    @alanrossreviews

    nothing i have seen suggests the sx60 can outgun the p900. The p900 is certainly better for zoom even if you have to back off as i did. It still has a higher mp sensor for more detail than the sx50 and even backing off the zoom 2 notches means the actual focal length is still longer than the sx50. The in camera cropping (digital zoom) has the advantage of being able to use the raw data which you cant do in post of course since the camera will only output a jpeg. However the in-house algorithm works for that digital zoom which can be better or worse than trying it in post it is still cropping. The same as cropping in post. The reason you dont get the same results with a full frame and cropping in post is because the bridge camera normally has a higher density megapixel count so you end up with more pixels for the same field of view from your bridge camera than a crop from full frame. However these new FF cameras with high pixel count do even out that playing field. The superzoom bridge is just a hell of a lot cheaper and more convenient. However the point is you can get same or better results cropping a full frame for same FOV as the bridge. It depends on the iso too since these crop cameras are really only usable in good light/low iso.
