The adaptor provides no distortion correction so it's really up to the lens itself

Would it be a NF-M2 version coming (like those for canon EF)?

I bought the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 4K yesterday. I purchased the Viltrox adaptor and all fits well and the image on my old Nikkor glass looks great. Looking forward to finally using my Nikkor 20mm F2.0 now. But I was wondering if turning the aperture on the lenses is doing anything? Being new to mirrorless videography, I'm wondering how you're able to control the aperture of the manual lenses on the BMPCC4K? Or are these lenses always fully open and the exposure is compensated with the camera? Thanks!

if it's old Nikkor manual focus lens, then yes the aperture ring can be used to adjust the aperture

I've recently bought a Viltrox nf-m1 adapter for my Nikon lenses to use with my MFT cameras. But the moment I attach my Af Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 D lens to it, the camera (both Olympus and Panasonic bodies) fails to show the aperture value, instead showing f/0.0 and also no matter how much I change the aperture through the aperture ring in Manual mode, the exposure does not vary at all in the camera!! Does it mean that the camera is treating the lens as wide open! or am I doing something wrong? I knew before it is MF, but this is too much!!

I can't really remember but try use the aperture ring on your D lens to adjust the aperture value and see if it works?

Well done and thank you Richard! I’ve not seen much about this lens adapter, but wondering what your experience was like with dx lenses - thinking this adapter would be neat with the 18-200mm lens or even the bulkier 18-300mm (particularly interned if there is significant vignetting)

hi @kdzyl2, sorry i haven't try it with any DX lenses but i don't expect the performance would be different from the FX lenses? I think vignetting would be better than used natively on Nikon DX camera as the image circle of the M43 is smaller. If i get a chance to borrow a DX lens I'll try it and let you know! :)

I have the Canon EF version and it works great, the "L" lenses perform amazingly well on the OMDs.

Richard, I have a Nikon 55mm F.1.2. Will it work with this adaptor in aperture priority mode? Is the adaptor able to sense what the aperture setting is?

No it doesn't. And i believe the aperture would also always stuck at maximum aperture with this adaptor. So it's better you get one of those cheaper dumb adaptor instead which would at least allows you to change the aperture from the lens

I have just tested it today and it didn't allow me to change aperture.

It is a pity the Viltrox adapter cannot be mounted on the new OM-1, the m/f button protrudes just enough to prevent this. It worked just fine on the EM-1 but sadly not on the newest camera

Hi Richard. Excellent video as usual with plenty of good information. I came upon this video because I'm considering to buy the Viltrox EF to MFT adapter along with a Tamron lens (EF mount) for my G9. I reckon the appeal of such adapters is to leverage existing ownership of lenses. In my case, I'm looking for a 3rd party lens solution (in this instance, Tamron) where MFT lenses fall short. I have a question and wonder if you might know the answer. As I understand it, lens geometric distortion (GD) is corrected by the Lumix camera (and perhaps augmented by the lens). For JPG and recorded video, GD correction has been applied. I shoot photos in RAW, so I do the GD correction in post editing software. For an adapted lens scenario, such as Viltrox + Tamron, how is GD correction handled for recorded video? Knowledge about focal length and other lens characteristics are needed for GD correction. Is it handled by the Viltrox firmware? Is it handled correctly when changing focal length of a zoom lens during video recording? For a completely native lens scenario, I take for granted it's all handled correctly for video recording. Now that I'm considering an adapted lens situation, it especially makes me wonder. Thanks for any knowledge you can provide.

Hi David, I suspect there is no geometric distortion correction at all when you are using adaptor like this Viltrox. You'll most likely have to apply the correction manually in postprocessing unfortunately.

Such a shame, I have a sigma 170-500 apo which I believe is an af-d lens. With a lot of practice I manage to get birds in flight sometimes but what a fight! And the focus ring doesn’t help at all. I don’t think the metabones adapter works with af-d lenses either

I would guess that Panasonic bodies have the ability to assign focus magnify and focus peaking to a button with non electronic lens so you can still use those features?

Hi john, I have not tried that lens myself but according to viltrox product page, your sigma 18-35 1.8 nikon mount would work with this adaptor. Btw if you use my link in video descriptions above, you can get a 10% discount as well

Thanks, good and very explicit review. For my lens and/or my bodies, however, no luck: Nikon AF-P 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR with Olympus E-M1.2, Olympus Pen-F, and (just to see if it was an Olympus-Panasonic thing) the Panasonic GM5 (only Pana I had). Body set on AF-S. Viltrox in A position: black screen. No lens info on screen. Panasonic: "lens transmission failure." Viltrox in M position: finder shows a picture, but not the correct lens info. No reaction to focus ring regardless of lens witch position. I couldn't find any firmware update on the Viltrox website.

Not really possible that because of the flange distance. You will lose infinity focus, probably can only focus VERY close if there is such an adaptor

Still it would be great for focus transition feature, Focus Bracketing for Macro Focus Stacking and to control the aperture with the camera... (what am I missing?) A lot of benefits. Hopefully they will make a speedbooster in future which can be mounted on the cage.

Great review! Thanks! Viltrox produces really good stuff as far as I am concerned. Also using their 0.71x focal reducer Nikon F to MFT and am very happy with it. Any chance you could test this on an Olympus Body with PDAF? I think that's were such a solution could really shine!

@@purvika2711 there is no AF on the speed booster. Viltrox has three Nikon F to MFT adapters. 1. "dumb" adapter (no AF, no booster), 2. Booster (no AF), 3. AF adapter (AF, no booster). Not sure why there is no booster with AF, maybe a space issue but seems like they should be able to make one

Thanks for a very complete review! However, it is not clear to me if with AI and AIS objectives the adapter will automatically keep the diaphragm fully open during focusing and close it to the preset value during exposure. This should be technically possible, I think, as the adapter has the motor, and would make AI and AIS objectives a lot easier to focus in everyday use. (At least in principle, even shutter priority auto-exposure could be supported with these objectives.)

With a AI/AIS lens, the aperture is keep fully open ALL THE TIME with this adaptor, even when you take photo. The adaptor/camera is not aware of the aperture setting with the old AI/AIS lens. I would suggest using a dumb adaptor, at least those allows you to change the aperture setting (even it doesn't have auto stop down )

No, at least not if you want to retain infinity focus because of the longer flange distance of the F mount (i assume you mean F mount rather than Z mount)

I like Nikon AF-D lenses, because they are excellent for manual focus on other mounts. Trying to get adapted lenses to autofocus on non-native mounts has too many limitations for my liking.

Does this work on the older Nikon AF D lenses?

@@TheRealRichardWong I think I finally figured it out. Leave autofocus OFF on the lens (and ON on the adapter) at camera power on (as I turn camera on). Then switch back to AF on on the lens. This now works. /it's probably my lens: Tamron 18-270.

Hi Richard, When mounting a ff lens on a m43 body, only the field of view is reduced, not the depth of field, right ? Ex: 50mm becomes 100mm. So, if i want to have the same field of view and depth of field when shooting a ff lens on a m43 camera body, i can just take a few steps back until i get the same frame. My concern is that the depth of field is also reduced due to crop factor, and i cannot get the same background blur, even though i already took a few steps back to get the same frame. Ex: f1.2 becomes f2.4. Please help to advise. Thanks very much.

Hi Nam (is that how I should call you sorry i made a mistake) I guess you raised a pretty interesting question, and it's hard to answer because it really depends on how you look at it. Strictly technical speaking using a FF lens on m43 body does not change the focal length, or aperture or DOF. but because the camera will now only capture the center part of the image, it means: 1. the equivalent focal length is increased (by a factor of 2) 2. the light gathering power is same, unchanged. so exposure settings is not changed. 3. However, since the field of view is more narrow, you would need to step back a lot more to cover the same scene, or use a wider lens if you want to shoot at same place and have same composition. What it means is your equivalent DOF is also doubled i.e. a FF 50mm f/1.4 lens on a m43 will be equivalent to a 100mm f/2.8 lens now in terms of DOF and FOV. (even if you are still shooting at f/1.4) to get the same kind of FOV. Hope it makes sense. If not, feel free to ask more! :)

Now that i don't have the wider lens to shoot from the same position, i am still taking picture with my m43 and 50mm f1.4 ff lens combo (which is equivalent to 100mm f2.8), i already took quite a few steps back from, let's say the A spot to the B spot, because i want to have the same composition/cover the same scene. Does this produce the same amount of background blur as when shooting a ff body with that very same 50mm f1.4 ff lens at the initial A spot ? I only own a m43 body and yet to have a ff body to do this experiment, so it would be super helpful if you could let me know the result of aforementioned shooting scenarios (the amount of background blur), thus giving me more ideas on future camera/lens purchase decisions. Hi Nam, sorry KZread is terrible in notifying me when people reply to a reply. Only just saw your reply. It's quite hard to explain it without using photos or videos, but short answer is you can get the same look with the same lens but used on a m43 vs FF body. Composition, field of view, depth of view all changes in different way when you try to adjust one to match one.

With my Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K my quick test showed: Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 G2 (no auto-focus, aperture control only when switching adapter MF to AF for each single f-stop change, IS didn't appear to function) Tamron 15-30 f/2.8 G1 (no auto-focus, aperture control okay, IS didn't appear to function) Nikkor 50G f/1.8 (no auto-focus, no aperture control) It may be the Blackmagic camera that is causing the incompatibility - I've emailed support to check. I'm not too fussed about auto-focus, so at least I can use the Tamrons on the camera (which I couldn't before), shame about the Nikkor though.

What about IQ? When you use FF on crop bodies the IQ is generally lower.

Since the adaptor has no optics in it (would be good if it's a turbo booster!!) so it really depends on the lens itself. If its one of those lenses that performs well on the 45MP Z7 and D850, then it would perform just as well (or even better as we don't use the edges) on a 20MP m43 body.

@@MyFighter2000 The Two Nikon AF D lenses wouldn't work because as mentioned at 10:30 this adaptor only works with the newer lenses with AFS motor. The Sigma 85 1.4 (is that the ART version?) should work though. I haven't test that lens, but I have tested with the Signa 50 1.4 ART and that works very well.

Sigma 85mm f 1.4 not a art and have a build in hsm motor. This 3 are my top portrait lenses for portrait and all does not work, to bad i was so happy to order this adapter . I have much more other Nikon lenses and the Tamron 28-70 f2.8 is hunting and hunting and never find a focus point. What lenses - model you are tested and work?

​@@MyFighter2000 Hi, I've tested it with all the Nikon AFS lenses I've and they all work fine. Nikon AFS 28 1.8G Nikon AFS 35mm f/1.4G Nikon AFS 70-200 f/2.8G (the very old first version) Nikon AFS 60mm f/2.8G Macro and some other Nikon AFS lenses. I've also tested with the third party lens like Sigma 50mm f/1.4 ART and that works fine too

FINALLY! Was looking for this type of adapter a few years ago. Unfortunate about continuous AF, but then again, Nikon couldn't do it with their own adapter for the Z mount. Hopefully, they'll also create a 0.64X focal-reducer version.

Yeah consider even Nikon themselves can't do a perfect adaptor and this one is to make phase detection lens work on contrast detection camera I think viltrox did a great job already

yes i feel the adaptor performs good enough for a lot of people/usage. Not perfect and not native performance but good enough. oh a 0.64x (or even better 0.5x) focal reducer would be great! But i guess there would be technical challenge as it has AF,VR support unlike just being a manual focus adaptor.

Ok I believe fringer makes a smart adaptor for nikon F to fuji x that is perfect for you. Note. I have not try that myself

This adapter does not auto focus with dx lenses.

I can only guess it would. As it seems to work well with all the nikon afs lenses I have tested. But I haven't test this myself

If you "AF" is the old style autofocus motor that requires body AF motor, then it wouldn't work. All DX lenses should work as they use the newer AF-S or AF-P style autofocus mechanism

Your autofocus test is not so clever. Did you set focus + shot mode to make it impossible to see because of flashing screen ? You do it as fast as possible to not to see anything at all ? Do you think the speed of focusing is everything what matters, accuracy, stability, smoothness does not matter. Hmmmm, not so pro.

it should in theory, but sorry i havn't test it with a OM1 to give you a solid answer. And no not aware of any CAF adaptor for Nikon F to M43

@@chinmayeed Yes some Nikon lenses with OM1. AF works but poorly, needa focus a few times. VR works as well but only for 3-4 second and stopped working. I wouldnt recommend if AF is what you are after.
