I have a 1972 model year Nikon F with the Ftn prism head, silver on black. Fully refurbished from a local camera repair shop where I acquired it earlier this year. I just can't put that thing down! I've learned so much about film photography using that camera, even though I'm always learning with my other four film SLRs! But it is just so cool to take pictures with this legendary film SLR!

The non-system Nikkormat from Nikon was equally wonderful. (Nikomat was the Japan-only badge).

I’ve never owned a Nikon SLR, film or digital, and always hear how these were the pro’s gold standard. Would love to see a video on the progression of the early film models. My father-in-law has an F3 I believe with multiple lenses and has offered it up to me but I told him he should sell it. I may rethink that!

Never decline an offer to keep something like that in the family. That F3 was probably used to capture images of your spouse through the years. Even if it wasn’t, it’s your father-in-law’s and you’ll probably appreciate it more in the future (not to mention being able to use it now). Get it and enjoy it!

I own at least one Nikon F, F5 and Nikomat Ftn cameras. My first camera was a Nikon F2. Wonderful camera.

I still have a 73' Nikon F Black 'Apollo' . Big Metz 45 flash. As was mentioned, the 105 mm lens is really sharp..FTN meter still works. I don't know how to let go of it. Thanks for the review..

I currently have 2 Nikon F’s, one with plain prism, and one with Photomic T finder. I have had 4 over the years. Love them . I now have added a Nikon F2.

If you had to have only one, which would it be the F or F2?

  • @geneduprey6938

@@EdwardT9 that is a hard question to answer. I like both, but the F2 is easier to change film, due to hinged back, however the removable back was never a problem for me. I guess I would pick the F as I have owned 4 of them over the past 40+ years, and only recently bought an F2. I currrently have 2 F’s. All 3 currently have film in them.

@@geneduprey6938 thanks. I just got an F2, although I always wanted an F the hinged back and less bulky looking DP1 sold me on the F2.

I got a Nikon F2 black body and it got the 2 parts motor drives and special meter settings which fit on the left side of the camera to control the lens and I need to get the camera fixed and when I do I also need to get a exposure meter head for it and i paid £10.00 for all of them from a camera shop in London in 2023

Very good presentation for the Legendary F camera, I have one and also have the F2 and F3. If I may ask you your opinion, which view finder is better for the F2, the DP-2 or DP-11?

Personally, I prefer the DP-2, but it seems pros here in Japan preferred the DP-11. I wouldn't care too much which finder I used, so long as it works.

All metal, mostly brass which is painted either black like this one or silver. solid enough to stop a bullet, as one war photographer found out. His Nikon F saved his life when it took a bullet that would have killed him if he hadn't be holding his Nikon F.
