NIKON D780 Review - well an in-depth chat anyway

The Nikon D780 has not received much attention - it's all about mirrrorless and crazy high specs. The D780 is a top performing real world camera that embeds the best of traditional DSLR and Mirrorless in a professional quality body (read not a stupidly small body!) that allows use of older - but in my view - better Nikon "D" lenses.

Thx, cool Video. I have the 780, I think many users are victims of the mirrorless marketing, they believe in the newest and Nikon must follow them and hope for the best.

Allen, this is another fine review. I throughly enjoy your approach and style. Unlike so many of your cohort reviewing photography and equipment on You Tube, you are not full of yourself or trying to impress us with minutiae about such things as sensor logic or color algorithms. A camera is a tool and each of us has our own particular needs and preferences for using one. Horses for courses. You haven't lost that in your chats. I'm an enthusiast not a professional. I'm slowly building my skill and confidence with a used D750 which replaced my previous D7100. Although I have no reason whatsoever to "move up," I do keep an eye out on the next generation of tools. (Also, my wallet doesn't support an unbridled gear acquisition habit!) As such, I attempt to regularly follow your posts. Thanks again and keep them coming!

Thanks for another excellent chat about the D780. It has been said that Nikon's marketing leaves a lot to be desired, and, IMO, it's a shame that the D780 didn't/doesn't get much air play. Looking forward to your BTS's on upcoming assignments. As to the grip discussion, I have a D750 and got a third party grip about a year ago, mainly for more stability and comfort shooting vertical shots. It was fine, but recently I removed the grip just because I liked the compactness and ergo's of the Nikon body. I also got a "Clutch" by Peak Design, which enables the camera to be held in one hand and makes it feel like it's part of your hand. Working well for me so far.

The fail on this camera was no sub selector. I find this button is superior for picking focus points.

Nice testimony. Small point: G notes Gelded, means there's no aperture ring. Most are made in China, but G is not a region code.

I have a D780. The only issue I have with it is the lack of vertical grip functionality. I bought a 3rd party grip and it has an vertical shutter release that works if you use a little cord to accomplish it which is clunky.

Good day. Thank you very much for the video. I am very interested in 2 questions: 1) is it possible to see how the camera takes pictures in liveview mode? The fact is that before that I came across old DSLR cameras, where shooting through the lifiview was terribly slow and noisy. 2) I doubt the autofocus speed of this camera and Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f / 1.8D lens. In the case of the d780, won't the lens slow down the camera, thereby preventing the camera from reaching its full autofocus potential?

Answer: 1. Autofocus is quiet in liveview and have face and eye detection just like the mirrorless 2. Nikkor 50mm 1.8d and D780 is compatible and the auto focus is fast also.

Allen, I am renting a D780 for a week, presently using a D750, and it arrived yesterday. I had a hard time putting it down. Thanks to your videos, I was able to set up the camera in no time. I watched this video again and have a questions about going from eye/face detect back to "regular" AF in LV which you covered near the end of your video. (1) You simply stayed in Auto Area AF and hit the OK button to actually bring up a regular box in 3D tracking, instead of switching out of Auto Area AF and going to say, Wide Area mode. If you have a static subject, and want to get out of eye/face detect, do you recommend staying in Auto Area AF and implementing tracking (even though the subject is stationary)? I guess a box is a box unless you need something smaller. (2) Do you have your Fn button programmed to affect AF choices? Thanks!

I do as you say in (1) mostly. If it's moving to say photographing a wedding ring then I will change to a smaller box as there's no time pressure. I don't think there's a Fn button that can be programmed (Maybe I've missed it?) but do have one of the "i" menu choices as AF Area. It's a bit quicker maybe than the front left AF buttron plus wheel. Allen

  • @CreativePixelPhotos

No. Live view and the ovf are totally separate systems. You can have live view at 1000th sec and f16 and switch to ovf which is say 5th sec at f1.4 with different af etc. Basicall52 cameras in one body

Thank you for an informative video. I have had a Nikon D7000, but the thing has cracked up. I can purchase a 2nd hand D750 for $1110 - 47000 shutter count and a D780 2nd 2d hand for $1740 with 30000shutter count or a brand new D780 for $2350 Don't know what route to go

Hi - the difference between the D750 and D780 using the optical viewfinder is minimal. Live view is of course a whole different story and if you want good face/eye af using live view then it's the D780 - if you wouldn't use face/eye af that often, or don't use live view much I'd go with the D750 and sepnd the money on lenses which will probably have more impact on your photography (maybe you already have all the lenses you want though!)
