NIKON D780 My Use and Settings For Weddings

The Nikon D780 is great but it's still just a tool to do a job - in my case wedding and here I explain the settings I use for both OVF and Live View Shoot to have a camera that rarely needs any changes to be able to the shot

    Mr. Blasdell, thank you for sharing your detailed working knowledge of the Nikon D780. Your comment on the SONY metering system's failure on the eye-detection focus and the focus point was invaluable! After I watched this video, I sat down with my D780 and played around to get my understanding right. Then, I had to watch your video again to fully understand what you're trying to get across here. Thank you.

    You can also assign the ae-lock to the shutter botton and you only have have to worry with the Back botton focus - it’s faster

    Thanks Allen, you are my d780 custom tailor !! Many blabla videos here, but yours speak exactly about the real life problems we have, thanks a lot !! But can you help me with one question. I come from the analog photography originally. Can I only use the electronic shutter, with its disadvantages as distortion and problems with fluorescent light, in live view on my d 780 or is there a way also to use the mechanical shutter ? Thanks for your help in the digital world and I hope my question is not too stupid !

    @@image-i-nation-photography Great - quick question - do you use any 3rd party flashes? My Godox and Mieke won't work in TTL - although my Godox xPro wireless trigger works fine. Have asked Nikon who say basically - tough - we don't test our cameras for 3rd party compatibility - yet these have worked on all my other Nikons

    Allen, great video as usual. When you are using LV, Auto Area AF, Continuous, and Face/Eye Detection, what role (if any) does the AF-On button play? In other words, does the camera automatically acquire focus on a face/eye, or must you press the AF-On button to acquire focus and hold it to keep focus (if, say, the subject steps back or moves to the side, or you unintentionally move)? My impression is that, being in Auto Area AF mode, the camera stays focused on the face/eye even if the subject moves around. This is a face/eye detection question, not a subject tracking question which you covered very well towards the end of the video. Thank you! 👍👍👍

    Ok... In autoarea with face detect on in the menu it will instantly spot a face. No action required and it'll track also. Move to another face with d pad. When ready hit focus and shoot. Brilliant and every bio as good as Sony.

    Hi - I used the D780 for about 35 weddings last year. Beautiful camera - best dlsr ever. I changed to the Z6ii for 2 things only - image stabilization and seeing the exposure in viewfinder. However I didn't use it for video - I had the Z5 which was - I'm sad to say - way better if only because of the image stabilization. I only had a 24-70 that had VR (rest were primes with no VR) The Z6ii is yet another step up over the Z5 for video and if video is your thing I'd definitely suggest it as the best option.

    Allen, just a couple of questions regarding the father/bride and bride/groom processing down the aisle. Since you are using AF-C, do you have your shutter set to "Release priority" or "Focus priority", and why? Also, as you keep the BBF button pressed, do you take the sequence of photos by manually pressing the shutter button for each frame, or do you use a burst mode? Thanks! 👍

    Hi. AFC is set to release and Afs to focus. I've found that if it's set to Focus then the camera wants to nail it which with someone walking towards you means it'll not even release the shutter most of the time. AFC with release fires off and 90% are very well focused. I use single shot not burst and look for an interesting moment. But the first kiss lasts only a second sometimes so I do use burst for that. Hope that helps 😊

    Hi. I know it's possible to create a transferrable file that will setup your camera - never done it but if that's what you want I'll have a go and send to you. Otherwise it's all pretty simple - I mostly use Aperture priorty with Auto ISO and max ISO 25600 (they are actually useable evan at that level!) and min shutter to 1/120th - regardless of lens as it's more about people moving and being blurred. White Balance is always auto. I do switch to Manual priorty when using flash and also manual ISO - (Have set U1 to this setting for speed) so I can set the background exposure then turn on flash using TTL and spot metering for the shot. I use spot metering always. Focus is usually either D9 or Group area in viewfinder mode or AutoArea in Live view (so it automatically picks up faces OR I can hit OK for a tracking box) If I've missed something do ask or if you would like me to try the transferable file just say. Allen

    Hi Allen, I am thinking to get D780 instead of my D4. I am mainly wedding/event photographer and I don't really need all that shutters per second. Can you tell me is D780 better with autofocus (all around) especially in low light? Thanks!

  • @CreativePixelPhotos

    @CreativePixelPhotos

    HI - hands down the best camera I've ever had for AF especially in low light! Better than my Z5 in low light and if I shoot 60 images during 1st dance with 50mm F1.4 and light level requiring 8000iso then 55 out of 60 will be spot on focus. Generally I shoot around 1000 at a wedding and honestly I never even check focus when selecting 200 to edit - I just know they'll be tack sharp - I remember a few years ago the over-riding consideration was, "is it in focus" - now it's not even something I think about. Hope that helps :-) Allen

    @@CreativePixelPhotos yes this helps a lot, thank you. Couldn't find any comments from the real world. My D4 is still in great condition but it is depreciating fast. D5 is a total overkill and mirrorless are not an option (we shoot at least 1000 images per event two or three days in a row) because of the battery life and on camera flash. I like D780 a lot, but I can't try it out in camera store in my country nor is there rentals unfortunately. I'm definitely step closer to getting one. Thanks!

    @@monetarnie3841 Hi, I didn't buy anything yet. I am waiting until the April, maybe May until I decide (if they bring out Z6III). I have used Z6II and it is amazing in lowlight, although there is no grid assist from flashes. As far as I know Z6/6II have the same sensor as D780. I could say it is better than D4 in lowlight situations. My field of work has changed since the first comment, and I am thinking of going into mirrorless system.
