Nikon D3S (a few thoughts about getting another D3S body)

I've been really impressed with my cheap D3 (original) body, but I regretted selling my previous D3S in early 2021 and decided I really ought to have another one.

Amazing cameras that continue to please. Many cameras will exceed their shutter life. All the professional have high shutter count abilities. 12 mp is fine. I know, I have a Sony a7Rii with 42 mp, but I get joy from my Canon 1DX that has much less. The old guard of Nikon and Canon is just fine. Paid professionals did well for over 1 million actuations on the shutter. These cameras will outlast both of us.

I feel that (at cheap current used prices) people should not miss the opportunity to experience shooting these legendary and iconic flagship bodies. They are in another league from most cameras & easy to sell on again for people who don't like the experience (they are so cheap that you can't loose very much by owning one now.) Best of luck & Happy Christmas to you. 😀

The D3S sensor actually produces lovely tonal registration and very clean files. And those files respond very well to upscaling using software like Topaz Gigapixel AI - if you need more resolution for any reason.

I own a Nikon D3x and a Nikon D3s both cameras both cameras are absolutely top image quality autofocus with a Nikon 105 1.4E just painting with light with the D3x. Also had a Nikon D4 and a Nikon D5 as well as a Nikon Z6 which were in no way better. The Nikon D3s is my camera for travel and motorcycle racing IDM always have it in my backpack on my motorcycle drives 297 KMH 100,000 km always with it never takes photos of what happens like on the first day in the same way as a Nikon D5, I fine-tune the image quality of the D3s D3x length improves. Especially in the dynamic range, the cameras easily beat a D5 ... D4 is not bad either, but I preferred the D3x to the D4.

Great video Timmy. Here is something for you to look at. I owned a D3 then a D3s before finally settling on a D4 some years later, and one glaring obvious omission that the D3s has (Which was the ultimate thing that caused me to sell it) that the D3 and D4 both have, is the the ability to apply any flash compensation of any kind. Quite often, I used to do quite a bit of street shooting myself with the D3s, and I love using flash to add impact to my shots. For this I used a small SB400 (Due to its excellent small size) flash connected via a off the shoe cord, or sometimes on the camera itself. The SB400 has no compensation adjustment control on it, so what I do, is use the flash compensation capability from the camera. To my horror, I realized the D3s does not have that function. The D3 has, as does the D4. I was gutted. It's only a small function, but for me, not being able to control the flash output, was disappointing. I checked the manual, then looked online, and discovered I was right, and that function did not exist. It may be pointless to some people, but worth bearing in mind. Have a look yourself. Also I noticed, when connecting it to and Ipad via the usb port, the Ipad does not recognize it, where the D3 and D4 work instantly. If you leave it connected, after a while you able to download your images though. You may have noticed that already. Again, great video and keep up the excellent content.

Hi, thanks for your interesting comments. Those particular drawbacks have not been a worry for me. I concluded long ago that it wasn't worth trying to use the i-pad with Nikon DSLRs. I have an SB-800 flash so I just use the up-down button on that for flash comp. I'll avoid the SB-400 now I've been warned of its short-comings. Thank you.

I experimented with the SB-800 on the D3S and was also unable to find any way to control the flash power from the camera settings. UPDATE - I like the Nikon flashes so much that I decided to stick with them and buy more. I just bought a nice SB-700 to compliment my two SB-800's

Out of curiosity I bought a really nice 5D classic to try earlier this year. I thought quality of the image output was really high (super sharp & detailed using a 50mm f1.8 mk.2) but I felt my Nikons were just much more familiar and easier to use , so I returned the 5D.

I won’t list the specs because you can see them in videos and sites like imaging-resource.com (in Nikon camera reviews go to the bottom of the long list of current models and click on ‘Discontinued Models’.) Briefly on the D3 you have double the shutter life of the D700, double card slot, bigger battery, faster autofocus which works in lower light, and better high ISO performance (not sure how much but it maybe at least a stop - with the D3S being better than the D3 again by over a stop.) With a D3/D3S you have the vertical grip built in. If there were any question of poor lighting when you go to shoot, you’d grab the D3S 1st, D3 2nd, & D700 last. I always liked the colours of the D700 (legendary as you say), but the D3 colours are really similar and the D3S colours too. If you have the D3 or D3S, you don’t need a D700 IMO. When I got my D3 a few months back I was amazed used prices were hardly more for a D3 than for a D700 in similar condition and shutter count. Maybe people think “I want the small compact version" and don’t realise that the D3 is built to last twice as long. If you buy a D700 with 100K shutter count, you (theoretically) have 50K remaining whereas a D3 will have 200K actuations left before it hits it’s shutter hits the end of its designed life. If they are the same price, that makes the D3 a bargain. Used D3S bodies go for about £250 U.K. more than D3 bodies. Check out this screen grab of a D3S with an amazing shutter count. purpleport.com/portfolio/timmee/image/5651998/photographer/?type=album&album=119796&referrer=timmee

While the D3 and the D700 share the same sensor, the D3s has an updated sensor allowing for better low light capability and buffer. I know the D700 is known for it's special colors but I still prefer the look of the files from the D3s straight out of camera. Truthfully, I have barely used my D700s since getting the D3s's. Regarding the shutter counts, cameras at this level, with proper care, routinely go well above their tested shutter counts (D700-150K and D3s- 300K). D700s frequently show 600K-800K and above with the highest I've seen being 1.2 million clicks. The 800K clicks shown for the D3s in the attached link, is the highest I've seen for the model but I suspect there are a lot more D700s out there than D3s's.

Probably shouldn't be watching this video because I'm not a fan of these ultra-complicated digital masterpieces. The temptation to capture images using the 'auto' setting kind of precludes any real photographic skill other than from professional photographers who know the difference. I was tempted to get a D3, but instead I bought a beautiful Nikon F2AS with a 55mm F1.2 lens. Best decision I made. Back to basics photography where knowledge trumps technology.
