This 35mm 1.8g DX was my first prime lens that I bought for my Nikon D60, now I use it with my D5500 and I'm very happy... but I only used it as cropped with my DF... I will try shoot with DF without autodetect cropping, thanks for your video... I don't know if I'll buy 35mm f2D but I can test with my 35DX.

I was pretty happy using the 35 when I was using it with my D500.. Now that I have a D800, I can use my 50's for a similar field of view. I want a 35 that will cover the full frame. Do try it out in full frame mode and see for yourself... I found it to have too much vignetting and the edges seemed a bit soft... Maybe too much distortion of the lines in the image... Yes, if you get some time to test that f2d I would like to see the results! I will be looking more into that lens! Thanks bud!

@@joscarcuenca Thanks Jose! I have been living in the Amazon in Peru and unfortunately it's very hard to find gear where I live. I buy everything when I visit the US and then bring with me what I need... It's possible, but expensive to buy gear in Lima and finding older gear is quite difficult as well... Thanks bud... I usually buy old gears through Wallapop but now its price has grrow up... sometimes somebody sell some interesting unit at good price... it's not easy but possible. Now I'm trying to buy a Nikkor E 100mm f2.8 for 100€. Yesterday I tryed the 35mm 1.8g in my FX (Nikon DF) with vignette correction setting to Hi and the result was quite good. @@joscarcuenca Good luck with the 100mm! Glad the 35mm works good for you and glad I could help a bit... I'd heard before that it was possible, but never really tried it until recently... My 16-80 Dx lens does not work at all in this way... It cuts off really bad... Take care bud and hope to have a few new videos sometime this week!

Very nice information and review. I'm planning prime lens for my entry level Nikon D3400 especially for KZread food videography. Which prime lens do you recommend, 35mm or 50mm (f/1.8G)? Because with regard to price point, both are almost same but confused which one be suitable for my requirement... kindly advise...

If you already have a kit lens you can set it at 35mm and 50mm to compare the field of view. Do you need the wider angle of the 35? Depending on what youre shooting i would think you would. Both are good lenses but field of view is probably your deciding factor!

Just wondering if you made a choice and if you got the lens, how you were getting along? For the crop sensor a 35mm is a very good all around lens whereas the 50mm is better for portraits and works well for many other things... Hope all is well!

@@euMMagic Awesome man... Hope it works out well for you and its a really good option... There are some really good and cheap options for 50's as well... You won't have metering with all of them, but you can look at a histogram after and make adjustments as necessary... Often you can pick one of these up for $50 or so.... Good luck!

Should this lens focus automatically? I have just purchased one and tried to focus using the shutter button but nothing happens. I can only focus manually using the front focus ring. The setting on the lens is on M/A.

Yes, this lens should focus automatically by pressing the shutter button or Af-on button depending on how you have your camera set up... Maybe you changed some settings there? What camera are you working with and have you tested another lens to see if it reacts in the same way?

@@BrettBodkinsPhotography ah, thank you. I tried a 50mm fixed lens, it was the same. When you mentioned the AF-on setting i looked at my settings, I saw it was set to Manual Focus in the camera. I changed it to AF-S and voila...its working....thanks for your help, today I learnt something new.

@@ekelundable No problem man and I'm glad you figured it all out... I really like the A/M settings as you can be in automatic all the time unless you grab the focus ring... Such a cool way to shoot... You may also check into back button focus depending on what camera you have... I haven't had my auto-focus tied to my shutter release button for many years... It takes a couple days to really get used to, but impossible to go back... Sounds like you got a new lens! Enjoy it!!!

Nimbe Zapata Hi Nimbe, I’m no expert, but I’ll try to give an answer. I would definitely recommend the 50mm 1.4ais if you don’t need auto focus. Go for the g-series if you do. 35 has a g version just like this but costs a bit more. I think a lot depends on whether you need AF. Any specific focal length you’re asking about?

Nimbe Zapata Yes, there is a 35g for FX and it would be a good option and would give you Af. You could also consider an older Ai/s Lens. I don’t have a specific recommendation, but I tend to gravitate toward the older lenses for a lot of reasons. I’m definitely gonna sell this lens and try another when I get a chance. I’m in the same boat and will probably pick up the d series lens when I get the chance. Sorry I don’t have an informed recommendation for you! Good luck bud!

Chris Emerick That’s awesome man! Can’t get much less expensive either. I think I’m going to try the D-version next as I don’t want the vignette all the time! In a pinch if definitely works for me and the FX-G version costs quite a bit more, so for quite a few people this lens would probably make a good compromise! Thanks for the comment!

@@Jupiter2ignite Guess I was signed in on my wife's account on her old phone! I do remember talking to you on those lenses! Trying to sell a few lenses here in Peru before my next trip back to the US so I can make a few upgrades/changes... Now that I have a crop sensor and a full frame camera with seperate duties for each, I'm choosing lenses that correspond well for each... Maybe eventually I'll afford a d850 and won't need to do that! Take care man and thanks again for the input!

The field of view is quite different on those lenses. The 50mm would be a better choice for normal portraits, but the 35mm would be better for environmental portraiture where you want to see the surroundings around the model more.... Both good lenses and both good options at low prices! You will enjoy your first prime lens either way!

Assuming you have access to one of the kit zoom lenses, you could set your lens at 35mm and at 50mm to compare for yourself!

I'm guessing that Jared is doing the conversion to metric because I mentioned its closest focusing distance in imperial feet. As he mentioned, most lenses actually say on them what the closest focusing distance is and this makes a huge difference in their real world usage... Thanks for pointing that out!

Searching around and not seeing the lens you are referring to. Maybe you could send me a link to it? I've not had alot of access to compare different 35mm lenses, so I'm not sure... I am definitely going to get one that covers my full frame for the next time however..... I plan on shooting my wide angles on the FX body, and using my D500 when I need the extra reach or for sports/wildlife stuff... I've seen alot of people ask about this lens, so I really wanted to give a review... Cheap and accessible seems to be the name of the game... Thanks for asking and let me know!

I'm guessing that English isn't your first language and we're having a bit of a language barrier here.. I will say that the lenses make a difference in final image quality, but its best to look at a camera system as a whole... Its a combination... When printing large, some people claim that you can print pretty much as large as you want because the larger the print, the further back you're "supposed" to stand for viewing.... In real life this is not the case and you can see a large difference in quality depending on the lens... I can't say whether you'll see a large difference in image quality with a new lens, as we all have different eyes just the same as we all have different taste on our tongues... I will say that there is a definite image quality difference comparing the kit lens to a prime lens, because the prime lens was only designed to be used at one focal length compared to the zoom.... The old saying the the jack of all trades is the master of none comes to mind.. A zoom lens is a compromise, and the inexpensive ones are even worse.... I would suggest one of the inexpensive

Mike, I think it's okay for what it is and I've had a couple decent shots with it... I actually don't do alot of autofocus in low light but will check into that... I recently got a full frame camera to compliment my D500 and am now going to look for a full frame replacement for this lens... Any suggestions? I also have an F3 film camera and like to buy lenses that work for both... I'm thinking of the f/2 D lens as my replacement or possibly a manual focus lens... In these videos I usually prefer to show photo examples and let people make up their own minds as to whether the lenses suit them or not... I find most of the problems with this lens get fixed pretty well with lens correction, but I am pretty uneducated on the technical side of photography! Thanks for your comment and hope that you find a 35 that suits you better! Let me know what you find! I'm gonna look for one to replace this one and I appreciate any input! Take care!
