Lugansky is the king of this piece! This performance might not be as clean as his other one on this channel, but it's still one of my favorites.

Indeed! I had heard _some_ Lugansky before, but this piece got bookmarked instantly (although the one with the prelude as well)

I feel so sad that he started making more mistakes at the end - not as a complaint, I just feel sorry for him that he's worked so hard to produce such a brilliant performance only to taint it near the end due to nerves.

I'm sad for him too... that said, in his misfortune, he consoles me for the wonderful mistakes I can make on this piece and on others 😁 His other performance was perfect and I thank him eternally for that.

@Anne I am well aware. Which is why I said it wasn't a complaint. I'm sure Lugansky himself would rather have had all of the notes right-any pianist strives for perfection.
I think no one can play this piece as great as Lugansky...

He was not happy at all and got so nervous playing after the minor mistakes . Sometimes perfectionists are their worst enemy , he is out of this world

@Андрей Бумецов And that is why my dad quit his career as a pianist.. He can't cope even with the minor mistakes he makes. The last performance he did was almost 20 years ago... Vladigerov Piano Concerto No.1, in Italy. He told me no one even knew who Vladigerov is and the audience didn't even care for the piece. He said this was the final blow for him and quit performing the next day. He told me that coping with mistakes is hard but accepting ignorant audience is even harder.

Rachmaninov unleashed a torrent of notes in this piece and Lugansky captures every one and creates an unforgettably passionate storm. Bravo, Nikolai!

Magnifique ! Brillant ! Subtile ! Je réécoute et revois avec plaisir.
Absolutely fantastic.
I really wish Rachmaninoff would've recorded himself playing this but I think this performance might be as close as we ever get to hearing the man himself playing it. Absolutely incredible, played like no other.

You can see in his eyes at the end how he's remembering his 100% flawless performance in Japan manye years ago with sorrow.... I played this piece.... I know that pain of regret too well.... I never played this piece flawlessly from beginning to end, even in complete privacy. This was the last piece I ever played before I stopped practicing 5 years ago. a 15--year long piano education that made everyone around think I'm the next great thing... I traded it for a comfortable job at a bank, and a higher education in finance. There are rare moments when I remember what I used to do with my fingers and wonder where would I be if I never quit... but I'm 25, still young, maybe there is still time for me to remember the old days of glory, and maybe, if I work hard enough, I will play this piece as good as Lugansky played it in Japan in 90's....

bro, you're 25. stop whining and get back on the piano if that's what makes you happy. and i mean this in the nicest way possible. you may not be a concert pianist anymore, but you can sure as hell still play the pieces you want. and even start a vst channel. i'm 35 and just getting back into it after quitting at 16, when my highest achievement was maple leaf rag and claire de lune. so you can do it lol

why dont you still play? im studying psychology and that is where my future lies, however, i plan to play piano till i die. id love to play this piece one day, i don't need to be a concert pianist for this to happen. Do not fix yourself within the past of people's admiration of you and your piano skills. "A man without a vision for the future, always returns to his past"
