What a superb masterclass - Professor Scheps has such helpful technical insights about producing the right tone and phrasing for this extraordinarily rich and expressive piece. And he communicates in such an understanding and gentle manner.

I am currently working on this- my professor told me to play the left hand runs as a wave, so to phrase each new one as a new wave rolling over the next

A great way to understand what he's talking about with the overtones, or harmonics, is to silently depress the RH E and G then play three measures of the LH without sustaining pedal and see how they sound after you've let go the LH. Try it!

Иля, now I want to hear you play the whole thing! Can you not make a recording of you playing this MM on this Bösendorfer?

the kids don't get deep enough, especially for Rachmaninoff. She tries to but it never comes off.

She plays a little bit "dry" as if lacking in vitality, while the professor tries to add some vibrat colors. Mr. Ilja feels the sadness behind notes that not everyone can feel. Although her technical proficiency remains admirable, the essence of emotion seems absent from her notes.

Yes, one thinks she might sound much better if she allowed herself to play from the heart more. Assert herself over the piano, over the technique. Use them, not be subservient to them.

With age comes wisdom and experience. Wonder how old you'll be when you leave the planet and how you'll feel about a comment like that if you make it to his age?
