Nikita's Gift Persimmon (Diospyros virginiana x kaki)

Nikita’s Gift (Diospyros virginiana x kaki) is a hybrid between the Asian persimmon (D. kaki) and the American Persimmon (D. virginiana) from the Nikita Botanic Garden in Yalta, Ukraine. The American Persimmon genes make it more cold hardy, while the Asian Persimmon genes give it larger fruit.

There is another wonderful variety in Ukraine, called ''Дар Софіївки (''Dar Sofiyivky''). I recommend!

I have a big piece of land underneath a mountain in Bosnia and I'm thinking of trying to make a farm of some uncommon fruit. Can you by any chance recommend any nurseries that I could get in touch to consult and see if I can order a larger number of these trees?

Thanks for the info. I've been trying to decide if I want to go with a Fuyu or the Nikita's Gift. The info about the astringency helped me make that decision. I eat almost all my fruit slightly under ripe and slightly hard so It sounds like this tree probably wouldn't be a good match for me.I've bitten into an astringent persimmons while it was still hard, before I knew any better, and it wasn't the bite of joy that I was looking for. Hopefully you get to see these ones through to full ripe. I'm curious to see your followup review once one becomes ripe :)

+TropicalEncounter An encounter with an astringent persimmon can swear a man off of them for life.

LOL on the traffic. It happens :-) Your persimmons look pretty big. They also look very healthy. Here's hoping they don't drop on you as I'd like to see the end result. Take care and be safe👍

Is it as gorgeous in fall as catalogs show. Its hardiness of 0 degrees has prevented me from trying it here in zone 5b MI. Whats your hardiness zone?

Any idea why the leaves have that "closed up" shape to them? I seem to have the same problem with my persimmon trees and was wondering what I'm doing wrong. Normal persimmon trees have leaves wide open and look much nicer. I need to fix this condition.

Ken, I don't know what causes that. Mine was like that since it was a small grafted tree. There is an old American persimmon planted in town and the leaves look the same, so it might be an environmental thing.

@@PlantAssassin That's what I suspect. Every persimmon tree I have ever planted in my yard and at my previous yard in the same neighborhood ended up like that. I'm wondering if it's a soil deficiency of some sort. Anyway, if you ever discover what it is, please let me know. I just ordered 2 American persimmons in the mail but they're leafless due to the fall/winter season, so I don't know how they'll behave next year.

Fruit tasted good after they ripened. I lost the tree, I think because of negligent spraying by a neighbor.
