Nightwish - The Poet And The Pendulum REACTION | Opera Singer Reacts | Live @ Wembley 2016

By popular request, this video has been edited from my past livestream and uploaded on it's own. Juilliard trained opera singer, Maggie Reneé, reacts to The Poet And The Pendulum Live @ Wembley 2016! 🤘😜
Nightwish is a Finnish symphonic metal band from Kitee, Finland. The band was formed in 1996 by lead songwriter and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen, guitarist Emppu Vuorinen, and former lead singer Tarja Turunen. Nightwish is the third-best-selling band and musical entity in Finland with certified sales of nearly 900,000 certified copies. The group is also the most successful Finnish band worldwide, selling more than 9 million records and receiving more than 60 gold and platinum awards, having released six Number 1 albums and thirteen Number 1 singles. On October 26, 2018, Nightwish was inducted into the Finnish Music Hall of Fame, becoming the honorary gallery's 11th member.
The Poet and the Pendulum is the first song in Nightwish's 6th Album, Dark Passion Play. This song is one of Tuomas' most personal songs, dealing with Tarja Turunen leaving the band and his feelings of it. The song at its time was the longest Nightwish song in duration,and is now the second longest song only to The Greatest Show on Earth. Clocking at around 14 minutes. The song is divided into 5 sections, each with different themes and styles being applied: White Lands of Empathica, Home, Pacific, Dark Passion Play, and Mother and Father.

    Yes. Every movement of her hands (for example the Whore for a Cold World sections, particularly the last; the All you need is to feel my love and so on). I've never heard anyone comment on the "Spitting on his grave as they came" which to me is really powerful and she again has the hand action to emphasise it. She is a master of performance, not just singing. But then, they all are!

I don't know if Tuomas ever talked about this in an interview but I've got a strong feeling the one and only reason Tuomas put this song on the setlist for this tour was that he finally had a front woman who could do it justice.

It was a complete new experience to re-listen the song again with all the background in mind. Floor and Tarja know each other and as far as I know they‘re also friends. Can you imagine how it felt like for her to sing this song with the band? I have just subscribed to your channel after this video.

    This is a ride through a deep depression. The chaos of thoughts - fast and slow - high voices, low voices, desperation, sadness - and hope!! This is so brilliant composed - and executed!!! Your reaction might be the best on the net - I have not seen any coming even close - so perfect perfect 👌 👍 🤘 🤘 This song is really showing the strength and possibilities in Symphonic Metal!! And you are spot on - on the ending. If you compare with "Shoemaker" where she goes fully operatic - the difference is obvious - you are spot on 👌 The ending is Floor's interpretation of how it should be - Tuomas are always giving Floor the responsibility / freedom to do it her way - he trust her completely!!

    The fact the band was so emotional after Tarja exited tells me all I really need to know. Tarja acted like she had simply changed her shoes. Nightwish was devastated on an emotional level and Tuomas captured that in this masterpiece. But it was all for a reason. Despite Marco taking his break, nightwish is in the best place they’ve ever been with Floor. She posses the talent and ability to really perform their unique form of symphonic metal. Tarja was very good, but she couldn’t flex the pop style as well as Floor. Anette was to far on the other side of the spectrum as well. Floor is the vocalist they always needed.

    The “oceans within” part kills me every single time 😢 the entire rest of this song shows you what may have happened had this mother father part not taken place. Without that one conversation we might not still be enjoying nightwish today. This clearly shows you how he was standing at that fork in the road. I’ve been there, and anyone else here that’s also been there will tell you that there’s that one conversation for us all. Love him so much, not for the fact he wrote it but for the fact he wrote it and put it out there for everyone who needs to hear this message. ❤

    Before Tuomas wrote The Poet and The Pendulum, he wrote "Dead Boys' Poem". Regarding this earlier song, Tuomas said "This is the most personal song I've ever written. My testimony for the whole world. With this song I want to apologise everyone who deserves my apology. It also makes an "I don't care" -statement to them who deserve it. The song is also about what Nightwish means and has meant to me. It's all, without it I'm dead. I have created it and it has created me. When I pass away, this song's lyrics are of what I wish to be remembered. An Ocean Soul." - before he wrote The Poet and The Pendulum.... Did Tarja ever read/hear/understand that?... now check out the lyrics of "Bye Bye Beautiful" and "Master Passion Greed".... Marko, Jukka and Emppu all signed the letter and had said earlier "She goes or we go". 26:02 the boy soprano is Guy Elliott from St Mary's Reigate Choir School! Marko sang all of the demo of this song - darker, dirtier and angrier! Wouldn't Marko make a great Herod or Caiaphas in JCSS? .... or Judas? 🌊

    About the "I cannot cry 'cause the shoulder cries more." I've heard that it would refer to Tarja. She was very, very dear to Tuomas. And that line refers to him being able to cry to her but at this moment he cannot because the shoulder is not there and is also in pain, hence "'cause the shoulder cries more".

    I've been a fan of Nightwish very shortly after they were formed. Found out about them pretty fast since Finland is our neighbour and have been there more times then I can mention. Love the country, love the people. Nightwish was something different, a sailing ship in ocean full of steamers. Their style, their music, lyrics - all was different, unique. Loved Tarja as their singer. When this event occurred what is mentioned in that letter, I was sad but I remained behind the band. I acknowledged that only ones who know what's best for them, what needs to be done and how to move forward - and only ones who have any say in this - is the band. It was a sad thing, sure, and raised a serious concern if the band will continue, but they did, with Anette Olson. I was glad that they were still there, still showing to us their magic. For a short time I received very little news about Nightwish and when I saw them again, Floor Jansen was with them. I remember thinking "Wait, this isn't Anette, is it Nightwish?". It was. And then Floor sang. And very first thought I had was "This is Nightwish at their best, they've been always extremely good, but now they're above extremely good. Way above." Have my Nightwish ticket ready and waiting for their show here this year, assuming that the blasted virus doesn't play tricks and shuffle things around.

    When Annette preformed this song live one of the times she had problems at home with her kids and etc (don’t remember the full reasoning to be honest) and when she came to the last part of the song (“be still, my son...”) she couldn’t control herself, broke down, cried and went off stage. This song is that powerful. This is a song which brings up tears every time I hear it. You mentioned Marko and his singing. How about one Nightwish song where Marko sings the whole song - Islander - Tampere 2015. He has truly a great voice. See you soon.

    I think threre is also the other side of the story. But there was no communication between her and the rest of the band for the last year or so. She only showed up, performed the arranged shows then left again. You can only go on for so long in a band that is supposed to be a tight unit with someone that you never talk to before things are taken to a breaking point which they obviously reached. Anyways, things happens for a reason and these events are in the past. The band has moved on, Tarja has moved on and i think its time all of us fans move on as well :)

  • @treintje1001
    @treintje10013 жыл бұрын

    Why was the letter made public, you ask. Here is the explanation. Tarja was loved by the fans, and lots of them idolized here to such an extent that they really believed that Tarja’s talent was the sole reason for the band’s success. The fanbase believed that she on her own was responsible for the success and they believed that the band would not be able to survive without her. Of course this is all far besides the truth. Tarja’s talent is obvious, but the existance of a band is not defined by a vocalist only. There are countless examples of bands who survived a change of vocalist. And yet the fanbase was living in their own reality at this point. This was the reason for the band (or Tuomas) to publish the letter. They felt that they had to explain to the fans that she could indeed be missed and the reasons why, and that the band would indeed continue without her. They felt they were obliged to give some explanation because they felt they needed to bring the extremely idolizing fans back into reality. However they never expected it to backfire as tremendously as it did.

    Regarding the Tarja / Nightwish breakup, I think Tarja was pretty naïve - if she was saying *to Tuomas* things like "I could leave the band at a moment's notice" and "the next album will be my last one with Nightwish", what the hell did she expect from Tuomas? She was one of the founding members of Nightwish, but Nightwish was Tuomas's baby. And there she was telling him that she would go on her own career without Nightwish. I have no idea why Tuomas, Emppu, Jukka and Marko made their letter public. That can't have been an easy decision. Maybe it was to head off the potential for backlash from the fans (and if this was the case, it really didn't work!). But things must have been bad for Tuomas to say that he *couldn't* write songs for Tarja any more. But it was sixteen years ago now, and I doubt anyone outside of those five people will ever really know what happened.

  • @FemaleMetalLover

    @FemaleMetalLover

    3 жыл бұрын

    You need the full context before you call her naive. They had already mutually agreed upon the terms for her departure. When she uttered those words, it was during an argument, and they conveniently left out the parts of what they may have said to cause such a response from her. Her reason for saying that? She kept being neglected, not included in important decisions. Tours would be contracted behind her back on red days which they had already marked on their calendars, and they would notify her after tickets had already been sold. She was notified less than 24 hours in one specific incident even. Even if its agreed how she will step away, there's no excuse for not treating her with respect for the remaining time. Keep in mind, in 9 years with Nightwish they released 5 studio albums. 16 years post-Tarja, they have only released 4. Their schedule was hectic and stressful and she wanted time to focus on her studies and explore her classical endeavors. She was left no room or space to do this, even though Tuomas and the rest of the guys had their own side-projects, but for her it was traitorous? Floor is acting more like a solo artist today than Tarja ever did. Thankfully the guys have matured, but the rules were applied differently and unfairly to Tarja. In the end, even if what they accuse her of was true, does it excuse stringing her along for 9 months and lying to her face, pretending everything is okay only to publicly humiliate her like that? I think you know the answer to that question, but ranting about "how hard it must have been for Tuomas" - does not excuse it. Just like a bullied kid who then bullies someone else is also not an excuse.

    @@FemaleMetalLover - Well, you're correct that I don't know the full story. All I can go on is the information that I have come across. Some of what you say there is completely new to me. I don't think any of the other four cancelled a sold-out-months-in-advance concert to do their own side projects, though. And it was (AFAICT) Tarja's choice not to involve herself in some of the day-to-day running of the band. Tuomas's letter even mentions that he and the other three were all OK with her not participating in band rehearsals until they were in the studio; and with Tarja not participating in the songwriting. Although it's not clear, one can read between the lines that there were other discussions occurring when the band got together for rehearsal or songwriting in which Tarja was not involved. Hell, they probably even went out for a few beers without asking Tarja on those occasions. My interpretation of this is that there were ways for Tarja to be more involved in band decisions and discussions that she didn't take advantage of. naïve

    @@nigeldepledge3790 There are definitely ways that she could have been more involved, I am not saying she is perfect, not at all. But the way the guys portray the events, its like they tried to apply the shock factor - when it was old news really. Like not being involved in the rehearsals. She was not part in putting the songs together in that summer cabin, that's 100 % true. But by saying only "rehearsals" that leaves room for interpretation that they might also refer to concert rehearsals. And for those, she did show up. Anyway, the point is, they knew already from day 1 she was studying a Masters's program full time. They knew the context and the circumstances, but they laid it out as of it was a new pattern, motivating their actions, but it was not new really. Also - about the sold-out tour in North America. It is vital to know that the whole band, not just Tarja, had agreed mutually to only return there for only 2 weeks top, after having a horrible experience there last time. Surprise surprise, they contract a 4-week long tour and do not notify her. In addition, that tour was contracted on days that were marked red on their shared calendar since long past, and the contract was not coinciding with fees the band usually asks for. Should she have conceded and just carried on and cancel her own pre-scheduled plans, and accept a worse fee than usual? Maybe she should have, for the sake of not causing any more unnecessary tension. But I can totally see how in her mind, she feels like they have already thrown the first stone by neglecting to include it in the negotiation of the contract. Also - it was particular tours in North-America which was straining on her health, not just hers, but all the guys. With horrible accommodation, sometimes no showers or any proper food at the venue. And to do this for 4 weeks with more costs than profit, combined with feeling betrayed and left out. It's not so easy as black/white. Thus, so much unnecessary drama could have been avoided if both parties just communicated a little bit better, and they're both guilty of this. But for the guys to re-tell this story and leave out THEIR part in leading up to these incidents, is an attempt to create a false narrative, and to control it. The easiest factor to understand why one should inject some serious criticism whilst reading their letter, and the book, is the fact that they had millions of opportunities to depart with her gracefully, but choose this path instead.

    Maggie, as a long time Nightwish fan, Thank you for taking the time to go through all the history behind this song. I remember being completely confused about when Tarja "left" Nightwish, I was young and didn't know about either of the open letters, so thank you for helping me fully understand what happened back then. keep up the amazing reactions and diving into the history on occasion. Cheers from Canada :)

    If you watch again, keep an eye on the lighting truss. It keeps getting lower and lower (like the pendulum) until the end of the 3 minutes and during the intro to act v they slowly work their way back up out of sight.

    My thoughts come somewhat from the outside... I was there at the beginning of Nightwish in the late '90's and found the sound they created quite fascinating... I liked the overall style quite a bit but I was also in my expansion phase again where I was listening to all sorts of genres and while I had a few "classic favorites" from decades prior, I was not fully enamored to the band. I would catch their new releases and appreciate the music, but I was never really "hooked". I also started seeing the "Diva Tarja" rising after 2001 with "Everdream" and continuing into the Album and tour for "Once"... I find it odd how they always call Tarja's husband Marcelo as an "Argentine businessman" and add "Tarja's personal manager" as an afterthought when he and his partners were in fact a **RECORD LABEL** and Tarja was doing all kinds of projects and gigs outside of Nightwish. I take no offense that Tarja was pursuing other projects but I also believe in fulfilling prior obligations and commitments first. I do place the blame more at Marcelo Cabuli's feet as a record producer and manager for pushing for "compensation" and contributing to Tarja's apparent attitude changes, as this behavior is well known in the music industry worldwide. For Tarja's part, you could see and feel the difference as she would sweep in separate from the band, do her performance, and then sweep out again... There seemed to be little connection left and there appeared precious little dedication to the band she had been in for over 7 years. Some of the points Tuomas made in the letter were also already known through other sources. I remember thinking that they should rename to "Tarja Turunen and Nightwish", even though it was the other band members creating the lyrics and music. I was only marginally impressed by "Once" (and I don't care what other fans think) and I was not really that surprised by them dropping Tarja and even appreciated that they laid out the explanation as to why. I also never really connected with Anette Olzon and kind of lost track of Nightwish for nearly a decade until the first time I heard Floor during their "Endless Forms Most Beautiful" Tour and was hooked back into Nightwish. The other lead singers were great in their own right, but Floor Jansen is still the best singer/performer the band ever had, and it was her performances and dynamicism that brought me fully back into the "Nightwish Army" in recent years. Those are my feelings and opinions and I really don't care about any rebuttals, the band's history is just not that important to get into arguments about. I appreciate them in their current incarnation, just as I appreciate other bands during certain periods of their career as well.

    I was at a Meet & Greet after a show in California. Tarja and Jukka seemed to be arguing about something in Finnish. They were not smiling and kept shooting eye-daggers at each other. Eventually Tuomas and then Marco said something also in Finnish and they stopped but neither of them smiled the entire time.

    I just feel like the part "Mother and Father" has a double meaning. Tuomas metaphorically use to call the band his Child, so the father and mother would be him and Tarja. We know that these words were said by his mom but, from the phrase 'Search for beauty..." the atmosphere of this part changes and seems like the poetic persona has changed and so has the interlocutor. To me, is like a goodbye message to Tarja... "Search for beauty, find your shore" Find your own way and do it in a good way "Try to save them all" Show your art to all those fans who got lost when we parted ways "Bleed no more" I wish your pain ends at some point "You have such oceans within" You have so much talent "In the end I will always love you" As angry as we are now, in the end, my true feelings will not change

    What I've noticed about the open letters is that Tuomas' one (signed by the rest of the band) is about things that happened, things that were said, where Tarja's one is purely about emotional response. The two moments that always get to me, "spitting on his grave as they came" and "thank you".

    To me, it's always sounded like the break up happened because Tarja's husband/manager probably demanded a bigger cut for Tarja. I can see why Tuomas would feel slighted by that, especially being that Nightwish is HIS baby. It didn't help things when she'd stop showing up for rehearsals to promote her solo career while she's still in the band! I don't think it was cool releasing the termination letter to the public. But all in all, things ended up working out for the best for everyone.

Well, after this, it is just The Greatest Show on Earth left. Obviously also doing the back story first, because nothing with Nightwish is just a song. And it must be the best version of the work!
